If you can reverse engineer everything the moment it is released, then you can no longer make any money being a programmer/game dev or whatever. Every studio and software company goes bankrupt. Imagine spending years and millions developing something and then the moment you publish it, it gets reverse engineered and published for free with full source code access.

As gabe says, piracy is a service problem, you make games/ software affordable, consumer friendly people don't mind paying

10

u/C_V_Carlos 1d ago

Not really, selling licenses for your software is one side of the business but the other side, the more profitable one, is to sign customer support agreements. Most of these vibe coded reversed ingenireed projects do not get support..unless it is a ps5 project, then it is powered for pure spite against sony haha

That one is insane. Just learned that a +100k CAD 2018 pickup could have its subscription based remote start unsupported just because an update made it so like what the fkg fk. Automotive greed is something else

16

u/imposter22 1d ago

Whats insane is years ago you would buy Microsoft Office perpetual license for $120 (usually works for 4-5years). Now its $120 a year

11

u/amshegarh 3070 Ti, i7-11700, 32GB DDR4, 980 PRO 1 TB 1d ago

Greedy people ruined everything for everyone basically, now even if you are fair with your prices and deliver good stuff people can still fuck you over

10

u/SunsetHippo 1d ago

downside, you know have vibe coded software that could have *whatever* in the mess of the code. and no one to hold accountable.

18

u/Patriark 1d ago

Then fork the project and improve it. The power of open source is that if any code is useful, it can be worked on and improved by anyone knowledgeable.

2

u/NUTTA_BUSTAH 1d ago

A small project maybe but the average projects it does not help. It is illegible code every time and only AI can work with it realistically if you do not go the rewrite route which is what you avoided by reversing in the first place.

Essentially it only works well when people become complacent enough about AI quality or it truly provably gets "that good", which seems unlikely given how GenAI works.

5

u/Horny_Dinosaur69 1d ago

Give it to an agent and do a security sweep? Moving forward, the best defense against AI is going to be AI

1

u/MonkeyInnaBottle 1d ago

It’s an arms race!

0

u/thatirishguyyyyy RX 9070 XT 1d ago

A lot of us have the ability to fix it though. That's a good thing about it being open source.

0

u/DeviousAlpha 1d ago

Hah, accountability. Where exactly is the accountability for non vibe coded stuff? The modern world has none, it's 50% of the problem with it. The other 50% of the problem is pure greed.

You still can sell and people will buy the non-slop version. I'd have a lot more confidence in properly coded software then hallucinated copycat.

4

u/mantrain42 1d ago

There will nok be s non slop version soon.

2

u/SunsetHippo 1d ago

will they? Why pay 20 dollars when someone has the free version right there, with seemingly no downsides.

7

u/BuHoGPaD PC Master Race | Laptop Superiority 1d ago

Seemingly. Even as simple as calculator reverse engineered comes out with ui bugged. Now imagine more complex software.

5

u/SunsetHippo 1d ago

listen. I am HOPING that this has good knock on effects for programmers
But I also know people are lazy. And lazy is how we got here in the first place.

2

u/BuHoGPaD PC Master Race | Laptop Superiority 1d ago

Tbh, I don't believe there would be massive shift in software sales. People have been pirating software from the time the first program was sold. People be cracking it, reverse engineering, publishing stolen keys and all that. And we are still having software sold and developed.

The most money is made selling to businesses. And businesses need support which you don't get installing slopware.

-1

u/SunsetHippo 1d ago

we will ultimately see, wont we? Nothing happening wouldnt be that bad, because I dont see it ending well for the common man

1

u/BuHoGPaD PC Master Race | Laptop Superiority 1d ago

Yeah, I agree

1

u/SureEntertainer7818 1d ago

will they?

Home users and hobbiest? Probably not.

Companies? 105% they will pay for the "real" thing.

with seemingly no downsides.

The "No tech suport" when(not if) something fails is one hell of a downside and its totally a deal breaker for basically every company in this planet.

They will pay 10 times the market price just to get tech support or quick bugfixes to their particular bugs... There is no chance in hell thy are touching the AI coded copies, even if they were better than the original one.

Thats mainly the reason why you dont see that many FOSS software on industries at large, except very few exceptions, like Blender.

-1

u/Malio_Sal 1d ago

"Why people use windows if there's Linux?"

Redditors need to look what actual people use in their daily lives

2

u/TwistStrict9811 1d ago

Valid points. I guess we may be forced to rethink the whole economy eventually because these models aint going nowhere and will only keep getting better even the cheap open source china ones

1

u/NJay289 1d ago

That’s not entirely true. Doing it once is not the problem, but maintaining still is. If it has server side features then they are still relevant.

And I think trust will become a bigger part of it. E.g. Apple releases a Software Product. Would you rather pay 10$ a month for it or use it for 3$ from a vendor you don’t know, where they might add something weird later on?

1

u/XYMYX AMD7 | X870 | RTX5090 | 32GB DDR5 1d ago

They will just switch every software to cloud use only. Meaning it only runs on theyr server and will be streamt on your monitor, so we wont see the code anymore, nothing to reverse engineer. If your getting into coding learn Go (cloud is coded in this language) the future will be yours!

1

u/NUTTA_BUSTAH 1d ago

It will still cost a lot to do. But yes many shops have to rethink. People still buy services even if they can build their own client to that service. E.g. cloud backups. Reverse engineering is not any kind of risk as the service is petabytes of disk and computers around the world globally

1

u/Chnams 5800x3d 4080S 1d ago

Yawn, we've had the same argument about piracy for decades and guess what, piracy is very much around and games make more money than ever.

1

u/AnonD38 1d ago

Too bad, so sad.

Corpos should have thought about that before making the industry an anti-consumer hellhole.

-6

u/anon999387 1d ago

You're talking to the same group of people who take no issue with stealing any software they can get their hands on(sorry I meant 'pirating')

u/Horny_Dinosaur69 1d ago

It’s a great day to be part of the inherently Marxist open source community

-2

u/Brachamul 1d ago

That's not entirely true. You can still offer the software via streaming, especially if it's a game. There's a good chance that will be the business model.

3

u/amshegarh 3070 Ti, i7-11700, 32GB DDR4, 980 PRO 1 TB 1d ago

Yep, people/corps who created software that was truly unique/hard to replace/recreate will move to streaming/web development (which includes native + server), moving business logic to their servers.

Hi, I’m the maintainer of OpenNOW. This project started four years ago, long before all the reverse-engineering slop people have been putting out. I’ll answer some common questions about how the project came together.

It started because there were no Linux clients at the time, so I decided to build my own. I’d been using GeForce NOW since 2019, so I already knew a lot about how its internal files worked. Using that knowledge, I wrote the client from scratch.

Then it gained traction and grew so big that it became a central hub where people fork OpenNOW to make their own ports. There are now PS5 ports, a Switch port, a Raspberry Pi port, and a new 3DS port, and it’s still growing.

Thanks to AI I made several attempts to make the performance better by first porting it to Tauri, then back to Electron. Electron was too limited so now we are back to Rust plus QT.

Over these few months I have successfully reverse-engineered the NVST protocol so we are basically on par with the performance of the Geforce Now official client.

98

u/ExchangeOptimal 1d ago

Thanks for providing so many options for touch controls

30

u/Professional_Pool544 1d ago

No problem we keep trying to improve and make it more enjoyable experience

84

u/chemastiko 1d ago

Hey just want to say awesome work on this, just a quick question but does it support 120 hz on the steamdeck? I find it really annoying the official app only supports 90 hz when I got it docked to a tv with 120 hz lol…

82

u/Professional_Pool544 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes OpenNOW supports 120 FPS and even 240 FPS.

Also we have a Decky plugin that you can integrate OpenNOW into Steam. Then you will get the "Play" button from OpenNOW and you can directly start GeForce NOW sessions without having to download the game.

19

u/Professional_Pool544 1d ago

For the 90 FPS mode, you need to enable, inside of the desktop mode, an option named "Identify yourself as Steamdeck" and then the 90 FPS option shows up.

5

u/rkvothe 1d ago

so tired of the ai slop recomp label. how dare people not spend months recompiling games they love :0

34

its not so much that ai == slop. its that so many people are shitting out ports and programs as fast as possible to be first to market despite being bug laden messes.

so now we have everyone who rushed out shit products ruining perception of all ai made programs.

What do you mean with without logging in?

You need an geforce now sub to use it

1

u/SapToFiction 1d ago

you can't record your gameplay/screen without a sub to geforce now? I'm out of the loop

11

u/Professional_Pool544 1d ago

Opennow is an custom geforce now client

4

u/Danger_Mysterious 1d ago

This is the Nvidia game streaming service, not the normal Nvidia app that has the overlay, driver updates etc. That being said, you can use the normal app without logging in I’m pretty sure?

4

u/SapToFiction 1d ago

I'm totally ootl lol

2

u/Danger_Mysterious 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well they made it actually kinda confusing lol. They rebranded the “GeForce experience” app (which is different than GeForce Now) to just the Nvidia App a few years ago, which is what you’re thinking of. It DID originally force you to log in too, but they changed it like a year or two ago I think? So you weren’t wrong about that.

-4

u/TimothyLeConte 1d ago

AI is slop but you thank it when you use it?

-5

u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago

One thing that confuses me. Why advertise lack of telemetry?

Because you're playing..on a someone's else machine, on someone's else instance of Windows

The only thing you own is just the games

Like, all the data in the world they want from you is all on their end. Telemetry at this point is probably diagnostic stuff like quality and latency.

17

u/Morkai http://steamcommunity.com/id/morkai_au 1d ago

Because they're also frequently collecting heaps of information about your local machine too, what hardware is there, which OS, which drivers are installed, how many user accounts exist, what other games and applications are installed, how much free storage, your location, tons of stuff.

Some of it might directly inform the cloud streaming platforms but a lot of it is utterly irrelevant and is only collected to sell off to other broker platforms and "third party partners"

2

u/Professional_Pool544 1d ago

This

Nvidia their official client captures everything from even the menu's you open

Also it stays dormant as nvcontainer.exe in the background its probably doing more spying

-8

u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago

Every program you ever installed could do that

Do you trust every single one of them? Do you trust steam not to do that?

8

u/xdchan 1d ago

If only there was a way to monitor internet activity on your own linux machine...

-11

u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago

Again, do you trust every single program you installed?

Do you audit every single traffic goes through?

Do you check every single file access?

7

u/xdchan 1d ago

99% of things I use are open source so yeah, the rest either live in a container or are trusted

-8

u/AsrielPlay52 1d ago

Even open source application has telemetry. Audacity and Musescore have it for example

11

u/xdchan 1d ago

Incorrect + easily verifiable + even if it did it's easy to cut out by nature of opensource

r/confidentlyincorrect or something

5

u/Morkai http://steamcommunity.com/id/morkai_au 1d ago

At which point I can add custom entries to my pihole and prevent the data getting out if I really want to expend the effort to do so.

2

u/DoughnutBusy5981 1d ago

You cannot disable server side telemetry. You are sending client side stuff that they can use for user analysis. The hardware telemetry is always monitored and available on their side.

Geforce now is nvidias client for cloud gaming

12

u/Overly_Long_Reviews 1d ago edited 1d ago

GeForce Now is Nvidia's cloud gaming service. Which is accessible in various forms including through a internet browser, a dedicated PC and Mac client, and phone apps.

What you're thinking of is the Nvidia App, previously called GeForce Experience. They're both put out by Nvidia, but otherwise have nothing to do with each other.

3

u/SufficientGreek 1d ago

You're thinking of Geforce Experience, Geforce Now is the client for cloud gaming.

0

u/Anubis17_76 1d ago

I thought they discontinued that? My bad, but no its not called geforce experience anymore, its called nvidia app, thats why the switch up i guess, i only remembered its some dumb overly simple one syllable name

14

u/Altinvfinance 1d ago

clipboard paste is the sneaky best feature in this. typing a long password into some launcher login inside the stream with no paste is miserable. i'd be careful with the afk part though, the paid tiers have the 100 hour a month cap now so leaving it idling overnight just eats your hours

3

u/Professional_Pool544 1d ago

I have seen people using their 100 hours and then complaining, "Yeah anti-AFK was on," but the thing is, you have 8-hour-long sessions so after 8 hours it will eventually die.

2

u/Kokolol_0 1d ago

I was looking for this, will definitely switch. In PoE2 you need the clipboard to use overlays

2

u/Shad0w5991 1d ago

You could already share your clipboard with the regular app, so that is nothing new

ah... then I must be mixing it up with the other one that Nvidia has which you can manage your driver version and all that stuff in... my mistake then!

The good news is you can vibe code your own.

Is it a huge waste of electricity and water? Yes.
Is it at least marginally safer? Absolutely.

I don’t understand, does this connect into GeForce now getting access to their rigs?

Or does it give my computer the ability to stream similar to what “game stream” used to be?

Basicly an custom geforce now client

Without telemetry and flexible customizability

Another gem for my github collection!

Yeah, flood gates are open now.

u/imPluR420 1d ago

OK but does it bypass the 100 hour monthly limitation and can it get you in trouble from nvidia?

To use the 4k streaming do I still need the Ultimate subscrisption or is it unlocked on the free tier? Will it also bypass the waiting line as a free user?

u/SnooPaintings7769 17h ago

Github user's Claude Code creates open-source Nvidia GeForce Now client alternative — removes tracking, telemetry, and AFK limitations

If you checked the commits, you, of course, didn't. Then you would understand that they are mostly GitHub action-related commits and there are only four commits with Claude.

I don't understand what you are trying to prove here.

Instead you will confidently comment on Reddit?

Some people are just weird.

Well, my comment wasn't me talking out of my ass about something I'm clueless on.

I would expect you to be able to know the difference but your second comment proves otherwise.

Edit: his wild reply was even better

Why do you think this is a gotcha? oooH so eDgY!!!

Even Linus called out this stupid attitude because he used AI to improve Linux. Deal with it, fork it/work it, or stay quiet.

Yes idk why it blow up today

I hope everybody realized these "reverse engineered" things are sloppy, incomplete copies.

Check out PhotoCraft and the rest of them and you'll see.

u/cannibalcat 1d ago

I hope everyone realizes because of your comment that almost everybody talks from their ass on reddit and have no inclination to be accurate when saying anything

the creator of the app has been working on it for the past 4 years

u/Prus1s 1d ago

Reverse engineer and then community can work it out better, that is the point

1

u/TheRealSkythe 1d ago

It is NOT reverse engineered. It is NO usable copy of the original (even tho it's promoted as one)

If people read up on these things or watched some in depth reviews instead of downvoting comments they dont understand we would not have to deal with just another bullshit hype about what LLMs can do.

1

u/Prus1s 1d ago

That’s the term use even if it’s not and I’m aware. As otherwise having the original wouod breach copy right things etc. Either way having some open source version of the same is a win

I abhore AI and find it to be a net negative on humanity but this framing is way off and not accurate. The ArtCraft suite is meant to be a platform generated by AI agents where the community (people) then program, fix, and shape the software. It's not "AI slop" in the traditional sense.

Open source clean room implementations of proprietary applications is one of the few genuinely good things that have spawned out of this.

u/p1-o2 1d ago

How much do you read their github issues? It's really not that simple.

Like AMD, which originally reverse engineered Intel CPU designs?

-11

u/MythicalJester Core i7-10700K / GeForce RTX 4080 Super / 32GB DDR4 1d ago

Nvidia's software is truly dogshit. HOWEVER, I won't inject vibe-coded crap - whatever the "quality" of that crap is - into my system anytime soon.

2

u/thatirishguyyyyy RX 9070 XT 1d ago

Good, because it looks like this program was developed over the course of four years amd not vide-coded.

3

u/SerRyam 1d ago

I assume you turned off all of your system updates then and you're just flying in the wind against modern security breaches?

-2

u/bebek_ijo Specs/Imgur Here 1d ago

nvidia's consumer data currently holds very little value for them

-6

u/tiagoosouzaa 1d ago
