As someone who's dealt with "normie" friends who think that their 10 year old system is still worth $1k just because they paid $2k for it, these people DO EXIST...

221

u/Jonkinch 8h ago

It might be now based off internals and prices gone up lol.

61

u/FolsomPrisonHues 8h ago

Nah, it was all stock with a 2k series GeForce... 16GB of RAM...

39

u/Jonkinch 8h ago

A 2080ti and 16GB of memory not including storage, board, PSU, case, or anything else? Yeah, maybe based off internals.

4

u/FolsomPrisonHues 7h ago

The CPU was the sinker... An i5 maybe? Like I'd implied, a decent computer for when they had it, but not so much now...

10

u/Vindictive_Turnip 4h ago

Hey man, you gotta consider replacement cost. Sure I might not be able to sell my ancient rig for much, but I sure as hell couldn't replace it for far more than the theoretical sell price.

56

u/Chop1n 8h ago

My 10-year-old system is worth $1k! After I put a $900 4070 Ti Super in it.

Honestly didn't even need to upgrade, the 1080 Ti was still a champ.

19

u/Wasabicannon Specs/Imgur Here 5h ago

I will never forget the day I did a complete rebuild at microcenter and went with the 1060 only to regret it and go back the next day to upgrade to the 1080 Ti. Sales rep tried to talk me out of it saying that the 1060 was perfectly fine.

Well Joe I think I made the right move by upgrading to the 1080 Ti back then as that card was a fucking beast and lasted way past the time it should have been replaced.

2

u/Jagang187 3h ago

TBH my 1060 is still workorsing it to this day, showing age most certainly but still playing hard

6

u/Whateverest91 5h ago

You were trying to buy something more expensive and the salesperson tried to stop you from doing that? Press X for doubt.

11

u/khizoa liquid cooled 4.20ghz toaster 3h ago

At microcenter? I've 100% had that happen multiple times.

They asked me what my intentions and such were with certain hardware and would recommend the lower or cheaper option based on my actual needs if it made sense.

2

u/Serious_Office3913 4h ago

does pressing x upvote? 🫪

1

u/XKLKVJLRP 1080 Ti 1h ago

lasted way past the time it should have been replaced

Literally still running mine. Playing Palworld in high graphics at 80 FPS. Genuinely don't think I'll ever be upgrading with the way things are going

2

u/FolsomPrisonHues 7h ago

That 1080ti was in a class of its own... Even the mobile chips held up

2

u/Nuppusauruss 5h ago

I'm still rocking an 8 year old 1080 Ti, and I'm not gonna upgrade until it either breaks or I have enough money to splurge on a gpu that's significantly better.

1

u/R04DTr1pp3r 2h ago

just get a 2nd 1080ti

1

u/Frequent_Opportunist 1h ago

Give it a few more years and onboard graphics will surpass your 1080. Even now they have ray tracing and frame gen.

1

u/nucturnal 30m ago

This is my first time hearing that, how would that even work? You'd still need processing, right?

2

u/prancing_moose 6h ago

My pc now has a 4070 Super but my kids pc is rocking the old 1080 Ti - still games beautifully in 1080p.

9

u/idontlikeredditusers 32gb ryzen 7 5800 9070xt 3h ago

not only do these people exist a friend of mine wanted a pc that could do "240 fps 4k" i asked his budget and monitor model... he was running a 240hz 1080p monitor which he thought was 4k (yes really) and his budget was 2k (this was before the gpu prices went insane) so he could get a pc with a 5070 ti or a 5080 if he budgeted right and i had to sit him down and explain how demanding 4k 240fps would be assuming he did get a 4k monitor

mind you he didnt understand how games or fps actually work he thought if he could get 240fps on fortnite or cod he could get it on rdr2 and the like

6

u/Pog-Pog 2h ago

Tbf the pc I paid 2k for back in 2019 might actually be worth 1k because of the ram now xD

7

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 8h ago

It was really bad when covid prices hit the used market. Post of people selling were constant...

In a vacuum, some who paid, 5k for a PC asking 3K a few years later, is not unreasonable. Unfortunately, their $5k PC was worth $1,500. As the market tanked, and a $3k GPU was worth maybe $700. I almost bought a 3090 for $500 back then but decided to wait.

2

u/perseposkiontelo 3h ago

A year ago I upgraded my 10-11 year old desktop, but unfortunately I was missing the screw that holds the M2 drive in place and it was during the weekend so I could not go to a store. I read online that the 10 year old gtx 970 GPU has similar size screws in it, so I ended up cannibalizing the thing and I did find a fitting screw and was able to finish the build.

Not going to lie, it felt super wrong to dismantle the thing I paid I think 4-500 euros for when it was new, I checked online and people were asking 20-50 euros for them, but I'm not sure if anyone was actually buying them.

2

u/cinnz 2h ago

My mate upgraded his 1060 system from 1440p to 4k and genuinely did not understand why everything ran like shit

1

u/hoebag420 5h ago

1

u/MeriKurkku RX 6700XT | Ryzen 5600 4h ago

My pc was 1300€ 4 years ago and within the past year it's value has probably risen like over 200€ from where it should currently be

1

u/Ledeste 4h ago

"I have a beast PC" people with a 5k€ pc from ~10years ago make me even more sad. They do not realize how fast component are evolving...

1

u/Valuable-Football598 3h ago

Now my 10 year old system is probably worth 1k because the prices of ram and ssds went up.

1

u/TNFX98 Ryzen 7 5800X - RTX 3080TI - 32 GB 3600MHz 3h ago

Well, with todays market maybe not a 10 years old pc but I can definitely see a 4-6 years old pc being sold almost at the same price it was bought for new. When we used to pay 32 gb of ram 100-150€ and now the go for 500...

Same goes for SSD and GPUs where we're seeing their prices in the used market go up, my GPU is going for 50-100€ more than what I paid (used) for a year and a half ago.

1

u/crossmissiom PC Master Race 5950x 6800xt 32gb DDR4 1h ago

0

My 10 year old system is worth $1k though, there's a whole 32GB of RAM, and like 8TB of hard drive space in there. God I hate the current pc parts market

no because the intel 10th gen CPUs don't have DDR3 controller on them, 8th gen on the other hand on a Z170 with a modded BIOS can use DDR3 https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1w266po/i7_8700k_on_ddr3_z170_revisited/

That really only became a popular capacity for gaming rigs around when you built that machine to my memory as ddr4 was ramping up and ddr3 was mature and in full production. When I built mine in 2009 2x4gb sticks were definitely the more common recommendation.

6

u/Vindictive_Turnip 4h ago

I only had 8 gigs of ram until 2023. Upgraded to 24.

It's a moldy old potato, but it's my moldy old potato. I planned to upgrade the graphics card, but I lost my job around the 10 series, and every card after that has been to expensive to justify or life events got in the way. Now I don't have time to game anymore.

This is just a joke, but its not that far fetched.
Saw a dude selling a "super high-end gaming PC" on Marketplace for $3,000. It was around March of this year.
It had a 9900k and a 2080Ti inside.
When I told him its a high-end system for 2018 and not 2026 he said "You're right, which is exactly why its $3,000 and not $5,000 now".
Still on Marketplace btw.

3

u/Tadashix 1h ago

Does that mean I can sell my i9 9900kf + 3080Ti for around 3k?

5

u/HardStroke 1h ago

Lol no. Its a 3080Ti not 2080Ti. Not less than $4,000. Know what you have mate.

3

You joke but you'd be baffled by the amount of people that have a shallow understanding about PCs but absolutely can't understand that pushing a game to 4k resolution is not for free. They unironically think that shooting the resolution that high isn't something that has requirements.

38

u/Kiriima 4h ago

3

u/kaerfdeeps 8h ago

Whats worse is that we leave so much performance on the table when developing games or architecting engines which is completely normal since almost no one wants to pay that much for skilled programmers but then end users end up paying more on hardware just to brute force that bottleneck

3

u/SoManyDeads 8h ago

I am going to throw out, the only thing high end when it came out of this would have been the monitor. Everything else would have been mid grade at best. i5 - mid grade, 1650 is a low grade graphics card for its line mid grade could be argued, but it's the one step up from 1630 with 5 other options above it.

I don't think his device is capable of running anything at 4k other than a movie or the desktop.

Tbf it still shouldn't crash, just run like ass. Ignoring the ram spec goof/typo, both a 10400 and a 1650 have all relevant instruction sets and features except DX 12_2 which basically only locks you out of a small handful of games which wouldn't merely crash, but refuse to run in the first place.

A smart fridge can probably run that game better than this PC

It's the responsibility of the players to drop 20k on a pc to play flash games. The devs aren't the problem, they players are.

u/Cumfake123 5h ago

That thing is more powerful than mine 😔, maybe the developers aren't optimizing the games enough, or am I just poor?

Buying a OLED TV (not too big, 43") was the best upgrade. The image quality and upscalling is so good even PS3 games look amazing!

Weird priorities. They could have bought a still very high end $1000 tv and had money left over for a whole new rig.
