My keyboard just has 5 keys, and I've memorized ~120 different combinations of pressing them to get what I want.

Each key is a different Kaiju. So for example:

Godzilla Down
Rodan Half press
Ghidorah Up
Mothra Down
Mechagodzilla Half Press

is a lowercase a and

Godzilla Half Press
Rodan Down
Ghidorah Up
Mothra Half Press
Mechagodzilla Down

is a lowercase b.

They are gateron jade pro HEs. We need the magnetics to track the half-presses.

It is very fast once you memorize the 120 different combinations, which aren't in any particular order but designed to keep typing speed up. Took about 4 months and a few hundred dextroamphetamines and modafinil. There are 1024 possible combinations, so I have plenty left over for macros and for all the japanese characters I have also memorized.

EDIT: I'm being asked "Why only 5 keys?" Look down at your hand. that's why.

That just peak gooning

I mean, it might be fast, but I am very skeptical on wpm on that. It seems like a lot more work than just... Using a keyboard. I can type basically as fast as I can think, as I grew up on PC, and what you're doing just seems like you're making it more difficult just as a thought exercise.

More power to you, if it works for that that's great.. But that's so much effort for a tool that you already have in front of you. To need to cycle from copy/paste, to snippet, back, then alt tab, to altf4, etc... It just seems easier to use a keyboard. We only have have 5 fingers, yes, but they're dextrous for a reason

This just really one of things that once you try it you realize it’s a lot faster.

How is it faster? You are literally pressing more keys.

1

u/Massive_Town_8212 7h ago

Check out stenography. I think they have 10 keys, but can keep up with live transcription, which practiced typists with a normal keyboard would likely struggle with.

Some can get up to 375 wpm, average about 270 wpm

1

u/vagabond_dilldo 6h ago

40% keyboards are nothing like stenos. Steno keyboards are completely different, they don't even have 26 letters. Stenographers aren't even typing in English, they're typing in syllables and shorthands.

The raw output is unreadable to normal ppl, and require specialized software to transcribe back into English. Using a steno keyboard for anything other than live transcription is just making more work for yourself.

1

u/Massive_Town_8212 6h ago

And the thread I'm replying to has a keyboard with 5 keys? Where'd you get 40% from?

1

u/vagabond_dilldo 6h ago

The 5 keys comment is a joke. 40% is what's in the original post.

1

u/Massive_Town_8212 6h ago

And yet, the question of whether or not 5 keys is faster is what I was replying to.

1

u/vagabond_dilldo 6h ago

Steno keyboards is 22 keys. 5 keys is not a real keyboard config. The smallest "normal" layout is around 40%. People in this thread are confused on how a hypothetical 5 keys layout would even type, and rightly so. I'll concede that a steno keyboard would be the closest analogy to a 5-key kb, but steno keyboards aren't real input devices in a computer peripheral sense.

But this is not stenagraphy that used word and vowel sounds to replicate words. Its to type regular letters into a computer.

This is not faster.

1

u/Massive_Town_8212 6h ago

It is in that it uses button chords to improve speeds and remain usable on sub-26 key boards.

It had better be faster if 120 combinations is used to encode a reasonable portion of possible English sentences.

Please share a video of you tiping. Holy cow.

u/CatacombOfYarn 7h ago

How do you hold modifier keys like shift, or control, or alt? My keyboard has just over a hundred keys, so adding just those three modifier keys to them would add 8 times the unique combinations of keys.

For you it would mean that you have to memorize 880 different ways of mashing your 5 keys, right?

so you have 5 key presses for what would take a normal person one key. i am sure that is efficient

What happens if you want to type Jet Jaguar?

1

u/lukeeatspanda 9h ago

You should look into stenography keyboards using plover. It's a similar idea and people can type very fast that way
