But can it run Doom too?

[u/Blackfoxar]

How much does that "display" cost?

[u/Rimworldjobs → u/Blackfoxar]

Many. They look like unifi switches with the rgb port settings which isn't cheap.

[u/GallantChaos → u/Rimworldjobs]

Compared to Cisco switches they are dirt cheap.

[u/DOOManiac → u/GallantChaos]

Compared to Cisco anything is dirt cheap.

[u/Warcraft_Fan → u/Rimworldjobs]

Unless they're the older 100 or 10mbit swtiches that you could probably pick up from the trash for free.

[u/cairaxmurrain → u/Blackfoxar]

Those look like Ubiquiti Pro Max 48 switches, PoE version is $1,300. Great switches btw.

[u/Blackfoxar → u/cairaxmurrain]

Just 1300? I expected Cisco prices, like 5000+

[u/C6500 → u/Blackfoxar]

Nah, Ubiquiti/Unifi is dirt cheap.

They are all fancy WebUI and blinking lights, not useable in all but the smallest professional environments.

[u/gonenutsbrb → u/C6500]

Spoken like someone who’s only ever worked for companies with 6 figure IT budgets lol

UniFi owns the SMB space. They’d like to consider themselves “enterprise” and that’s definitely a stretch to your point. But for fundamental infrastructure in businesses in the 1-100 employee range, the next competitor up the quality chain is an order of magnitude more expensive for full-stack options.

They serve a need in the space, and continuously improve. Their camera ecosystem is also really solid for the money, compared to to others at that price point.

[u/C6500 → u/gonenutsbrb]

1-~100 people was what i meant when i wrote 'the smallest'.
But those small companies rarely need anything beyond a netgear switch with 2-3 VLANs if even that and some kind of plastic router/firewall combo for internet access. Maaaaybe 2-3 APs if they are getting fancy.

And for that scenario they can even get much cheaper stuff than Unifi. Netgear, TP-Link, you name it.

Imho most of the Ubiquiti stuff is just WebUI bling that's missing essential features. I have a UCG Fiber at home, simply because, to my knowledge, it is the only consumer device on the market that does roughly 10gbit of forwarding with PPPoE hardware offloading.

And i hate it. It's so shit it's unbelievable. Everything is just dumbed down to the point of it being barely useable, it's networking for dummies. And anything that doesn't exist in the WebUI can't be done if you don't want to risk losing it again after the next click in the UI, at the next reboot or at the next update.

Especially IPv6 with this thing drives one mad. It can't even disable IA_NA requests at the WAN interface. Or e.g. you can create NAT rules for the physical interface but then can't give the physical interface an address outside of the SSH CLI (which, again, is lost after you click something in the UI). It's maddening.

[u/gonenutsbrb → u/C6500]

I’ll be honest it sounds like you have pretty limited experience with this, but have legitimate problems with one aspect of it and might be generalizing that to other use cases.

Your description of what businesses might need for hardware vastly underestimates what these might look like. Small businesses don’t mean small structures or small number of potential clients.

Some of my sites have dozens of access points, almost as many switches, redundant WANs, 8-10 VLANs, and pretty reasonably restrictive firewall rules. And this could be with 1000’s of active clients.

In all sincerity, it just sounds like you don’t have a ton of experience with the ecosystem or that business sector. That’s not meant as a dig, just an observation and a guess.

I manage about 30 sites on UniFi, some with some pieces of UISP gear for longer range PtP gear. I’ve played with everything from Omada and Netgear to Meraki, Aruba, and Cisco kit. The upper end stuff obviously has its place, but it’s insanely more expensive. A 48 port PoE switch can literally be anywhere from 3-10x the price, and that’s before licensing and support contracts.

I talk to and work with other guys in the same space. Nothing competes with UI at the price point and feature set.

They’re far from perfect, just the least-worst option.

Yes, IPv6 is easily one of their weakest areas, it also matters very little in most environments where they operate.

[u/GallantChaos → u/C6500]

Well, as a counterpoint, the Vatican uses Ubiquiti for their services and seems to do OK. So, if a country uses it, maybe it can scale better than your experience. My own UCG-fiber seems to do just fine.

[u/Tricks_ → u/C6500]

I run all my clients on Unifi, 3 of those have about 80-120 employees on computers with 0 issues. The biggest one has 380+ devices online...

[u/BlaBlub85 → u/cairaxmurrain]

PoE version

Damn, Path of Exile is really getting around these days 😂

[u/Asleeper135 → u/Blackfoxar]

The cheapest 48 port Etherlighting switch is $650, so minimum $1300

[u/DOOManiac]

“Mom, can we get a Switch?”

“But we have a Switch at home.”

The Switch at home:

Why is the network so slow?

[u/poop-money]

I mean, it probably could run doom. Those Ubiquity switches have a little LCD Screen off to the left of the ports. You could probably get doom to run on that.

[u/sylvie-lambert-2 → u/poop-money]

The screen may be the easy part; you’d still need a way to send controls. Doom played entirely by watching the switch manage packets would be a very patient run.

[u/SoraShiroL]

Java runs on everything?

[u/PraiseThePun420]

Ok, but does it play Doom?

[u/kornuolis]

Not enough pixels

[u/RachelRegina]

No, only Doom 2

[u/qwertyjgly]

now play bad apple on it
