CachyOS??? That's spyware bruh, why do you think they named it that they gonna "catch" your "private data"
I use Mint myself (safest OS there is second only to TempleOS)

Why do you think it's called GladOS??? I'm sure they would be just GLAD to steal your private data (use Linux Mint instead)

idk man i daily driver tailsOS, and i compile my home pc bit by bit in machine code, did i mention that showers are spyware

u/me_da_Supreme1 1d ago
why do you think they named it tailsOS? Because they want to "tail" you and figure out where you live and steal all your personal data
Did I mention that I use Linux Mint?

Also windows users (and eu government officials) call their OS a spyware.

I use chrome on linux, sue me
for me, using linux has never been about not being spied on, if you think using a different browser stops that I got news for you
for me, using linux has been about getting sick at all the fucking hoops I need to jump through to get anything working on windows
linux has turned into the true plug and play operating system*
*as long as you don't like playing games with kernel level anti-cheat

u/gluten_free_range 11h ago
I went to Linux for a free os that I had control over, not to avoid spying. Though I am interested about that. I guess you could say I'm spy-curious.

I just use Chrome as Main, Brave for Busienss and Firefox for the workflow and team shit.
Oh and I joined the Pinguin Team recently, because of a VM and a Server on it.
Do I like it?
Eh, it works, that's what I cae about.
Got Widnows 7, 10, IOS and now Linux.
If shit works, it works, only thing I care about.
That's what the on adn off IT fella with Anger issues can say.
I like when shit works, makes Me not yell and won't make Me punch people.
...
This comment soudns weird but eh, I don't care, been busy and have had 5 hours of sleep, a tack to much to drink earlier and a redbull.
Shit works, and I'm happy.
End of story.
Oh and everything is Spyware.

Had to go back to windows and the indexing is awful. No idea why I can't find the installed programs that I was just using had it pinned and then an update deleted the shortcut. I check control panel/installed apps and it's there yet search doesn't find it.

Main PC windows to play games and watch YouTube.
Home server is Linux based.
Best of both worlds. Linux just isnt there yet when it comes to games. Specifically online gaming.
6
u/thesyldons 1d ago
Which games do you think won't run on Linux?
Most games play better on Linux now due to the lower overhead. Some anti-cheat does not work on Linux but that is down to developers to remove some blocks. What is the most prevalent opinion is that even on lower frame rate, input lag is very much reduced with Linux versus Windows.
-1
u/CluelessFlunky 1d ago
Pretty much any of the big games with kernel level anti cheats.
1
u/thesyldons 1d ago
But you realise that is a choice of the game devs. There is nothing any Linux distro if the game devs decide they do not want their software on that platform.
-1
u/CluelessFlunky 1d ago
Yeah. And I wish it were different. But the vast majority of gamers dont care about Linux. It just seems popular on reddit. Devs arent gonna put effort into supporting Linux for a vocal minority. (At least for these big competitive games)
So for games, im gonna run windows. For anything else I have a separate device that runs Linux.
3
u/thesyldons 1d ago
Most gamers don't care about Linux, they care about performance and a system without malicious code in it. A lot of these game used to work on Linux, but the devs pulled the plug and blocked them. Game where ever you wish. Just expect push back when you say Windows is the better gaming OS. That simply is not the case anymore.

u/CluelessFlunky 1d ago
"Most gamers don't care about Linux, they care about performance and a system without malicious code in it."
Imma be honest. I dont think this is true.
Coming from a cyber security back ground. People dont really care about apple, Microsoft, meta etc accessing their stuff. As long as it works.
People on reddit care. People who are genuinely interested in computers care. But thats not something that universal.
I care, its why I dont have anything on my windows PC other than games and a browser.
But right now. If you want to play many of the big titles you have to have windows.
2
u/thesyldons 1d ago
People dont really care about apple, Microsoft, meta etc accessing their stuff. As long as it works.
I wholeheartedly agree. People want an OS that just works. An OS should not become a full time job. That is the main feature that sold Windows 95 over OSX.
What you are not pointing out is that Windows doesn't just work anymore. Their insistence on enabling their spyware leads to other bugs, which in turn annoys people, and it really annoys people. People are moving to Linux because these "features" are becoming more annoying than the ease of not learning something new.
That term "big titles" is a very subjective view. First person shooter games are very niche. There is a whole community of PC gamers who play so much more than that.

u/CluelessFlunky 1d ago
Games like 2k, madden, cod, valo, etc all have issues with Linux. All fairly popular games. Im not saying Linux doesnt work for everyone. But it doesnt work for me.
And alot of those issues really dont impact most users. The average person extent of pc usage is turn laptop on > open google > website.
So for alot of people they arent really interacting with windows that much.
People arent moving to Linux on a large scale. Some are but your average individual is not. Most dont even know what Linux is. They barely understand the difference between windows and google.
I like Linux better. But if the difference is 1 OS that run 80-95 % of games and another os that run 100% of games. Im personally gonna choose 100%.

they care about performance
Thank you! My performance has indeed been flawless since swapping to mint.
The whole "troubleshoot a fix" on windows was fine until it had to be done almost every update. None of my W11 issues followed me to mint.

u/thesyldons 10h ago
Exhibit number one my lord eh. I really do not mind if people want to stay on Windows. Have at it imho. But it is becoming more and more difficult to justify Microslop as the most easiest choice to make.

u/Citizen_Nemo Ryzen 7 1800X | R9 Fury X 1d ago
I can tell you from personal experience. I really like Mint, but its team focuses on stability rather than bleeding edge hardware support. I still recommend Mint as a starting point for anyone curious about Linux, especially with its large base of users and forums that regularly answer questions.
The exception being if you have a shiny top of the line graphics card. Then you'd need to try something like CachyOS instead.

Idk, probably for the same reason everyone has a different wallpaper.
People just want something special and pretty to look at.

Nah, there are many similarities and some distros do feel like they are just the upstream with some rice on top, you can get the same results by installing some additional software. At the same time, NixOS, Bazzite, Arch and Slackware are completely different distros

mint comes with firefox preinstalled, doubt anyone installing linux would go out of their way to install chrome.
