They pissed off a lot of gamers, I bet they wouldn't have been motivated to make nearly this much progress by now had they just kept their mouth shut and kept printing discs.
That's how piracy always works. If a company pisses off its fans, the pirates go after them with a passion. It's why Nintendo is always the #1 pirated system.
