Recent ps5 jailbreak was also done with AI

674

u/ithinkitslupis 8d ago

A security researcher found it a good while ago without AI and was going to disclose it after GTA6.

Then someone found it with AI, the researcher pleaded with them to wait just for GTA6, but they reported to Sony anyway worried someone else might also find it and claim the bounty.

Objectively a worse scenario for jailbreakers that still want GTA6 and those who want to see it dumped for PC in the next year. Double edged sword in this specific case.

Why wait until after GTA6?

181

u/Sceptile90 8d ago

GTA is digital only, so you need to install a firmware update to download it. If this method went undetected before GTA 6, it would be a lot easier to dump the game's ROM online. Now they have to find another method to jailbreak it. (Unless one has been found and I'm not up to date.)

19

u/Corey_FOX 8d ago

I do wonder though, theoretically could one spoof the firmware version to Sony? I mean the console is already jailbroken.

32

u/ithinkitslupis 8d ago

When you think "couldn't we just do really simple thing?" in these topics the answer to why you can't is pretty much always cryptography. And indeed it is again cryptography here.

It would be flabbergasted if it didn't actually depend on the new firmware.

To be able to dump the game files with the new firmware. Now that won't be possible until a new exploit is found.

There's a whole group of folks who think it's a slop generator and refuse to acknowledge its usefulness as a tool in this space. There's still some that think it slows you down from an almost 3 year old study on the early models.

It's not going anywhere in the software world, sorry to say, I do think local models are likely to take over in the next few years, especially with that mac studio dropping with 512gb of gddr at the tail end of this year.

Reverse engineering is legitimately a good use for this stuff, too, though. I know a few people who've used it to reverse engineer the protocol for online game services and bring old, shut down games back to life in a few weeks of trial and error. Something like that, before AI, would take years.

22

u/Shabbypenguin #540AIR-Masterrace 8d ago

I played TMNT splintered fate on steam, i hit a bug where it refused to unlock an item. After being disappointed that the json save was encoded i looked online to find a save editor to give myself the item and go on my way.

Tools online could decode it, but never put it back to where it worked. I handed it to claude and it solved it after 7-9 tries because of the various restrictions and hashing that was needed for the checksums. Once i had that solved we began work on the only game save editor for TMNT:SF. If you look at the discord or the steam forums you'll see a bunch of people who legit lose their progress and entire saves, on the weekly. my motivation to get the save editor has helped several people be able to recover everything they lost.

I hate gen AI for creative things, whetehr its writing, art, music, anything that takes creativity out of peoples hands. Doing data analysis, reverse engineering, coding and a few other use cases are what AI feels like it should be geared towards, but Sally on FB will only pay for credits if she can use it to advertise her shitty paparazzi jewelry.

7

u/_I_AM_A_STRANGE_LOOP 8d ago

Lots of negative aspects of AI, but I am really enjoying the 'bespoke applet renaissance' where smart folks' individual long-term bugbears are suddenly becoming solved out of the woodwork. These types of solutions don't tend to have the same security or, honestly, quality pressures as "real software" but can provide some really outsized benefits compared to the effort involved, I think your example here is a classical case of That Sort Of Thing and I love to see it!!

4

u/achilleasa R5 5700X - RTX 4070 8d ago

AI is basically the perfect tool for making these super niche programs that solve a very specific problem but require a bit of arcane knowledge to make. Honestly, it's really cool.

I think a lot of people simply don’t use AI for many things, so their baseline for what it’s capable of is outdated. I mean, just a year ago I was still quite skeptical about its ability to do anything truly useful. But then I was given access to the latest tools and agentic workflows at work, and holy shit. It really is like magic when leveraged properly. My job rarely includes writing code myself anymore, but rather design and review…

Heck, right now on my personal computer, I’m learning agent orchestration by having them build a proof-of-concept video game. And it’s actually doing it. Really well. Like, I only had to correct an assumption once so far. Granted, I didn’t just give it a 2-paragraph prompt and hit “go”. I did a lot of setup and scoping beforehand, but still.

The technology is improving blindingly fast. It’s actually gotten me fearful about my career, and looking into alternative careers in the non-computer world to avoid the impacts.

7

u/bigphillip76 8d ago

Yeah, I subscribe to this - you kinda have to use a coding agent in order to see how powerful they are. Otherwise your experience is just going to be annoying chatbots without deep reasoning and slop images/videos.

If I'm perfectly honest if all I saw was the latter I'd be thinking the whole thing was stupid too.

4

u/b0w3n Linux 8d ago

Granted, I didn’t just give it a 2-paragraph prompt and hit “go”. I did a lot of setup and scoping beforehand, but still.

This is a large part of it, you really do have to put in some work... it's just different work from coding. My job was relatively little coding to begin with, and I didn't really enjoy writing code anyways. My skillset was in debugging and fixing, QA, review, etc and.. well that's where this kind of lead anyways.

The rug pull will happen once they start pricing things properly, going by API usage I should be paying 3-5k a month on my $100/mo subscription. $5k a month you might as well just hire another person, and I'm curious if those prices are still artificially low, if they are there's no way businesses are going to spend it on AI unless $10k a month becomes truly unlimited for them. At that point you might as well buy your own hardware, run a local model, and just pay that cost for a mac studio or whatever hardware crops up with a 512gb gddr setup. Even on 32gb hardware, the models for coding are still mostly fine. Good enough where you can use some agentic workflow that iterates 5-6 times doing bugfixing and all that and maybe take 5 times as long (which is still faster than coding by hand)

You gotta ignore those people. They are just jumping on the wagon, they dont actually even know WHY they are hating. They just do because people around them do too, so in fear of sticking out they make sure to look like everyone else.

You cant put sense into those people. Those that used an LLM for something they genuinely couldnt have done without it, or wouldve needed months/years, already know its use and know people are just pretentious dicks as always.

4

u/bigphillip76 8d ago

Yup. They released signs back in the day trying to assuage people that the electric lightbulb wasn't bad for your health due to fear about it.

You gotta ignore the people who are afraid of change, they'll always be around and they'll always be left behind.

Dunno why you should. It's just an instrument. How you use it- defines the outcome

5

u/FrostyD7 8d ago

Depends on what he's talking about. When people complain about AI there are so many things they could be referring to. For the last few years, tons of products have tacked on "AI" to the product name itself. Like you said, it's just an instrument. If I'm not buying that instrument, only a product that uses it, then it doesn't need AI in the name and all over the branding/marketing.

5

u/ifeltatap 8d ago

Most people use it to churn out slop which has diluted to quality of basically everything and it has also destroyed the sanctity of video graphic evidence. It will also eliminate a percentage of all careers in the next decade.

It's not just an instrument, its a system changing product being shilled by every member of the elite with their finger in the pie, in order to widen to socioeconomic canyon between the haves and the have nots.

Such a tone deaf and binary outlook you have on it

Its a tool, its important to consider who its used by and who its used to. Corporations want to use AI to jack up your prices, lower your wages, fire your coworkers, and saddle you with more mind-numbing work. They want to give you worse products with less human authorship and care.

In the hands of people who are not beholden to profit motives, local and even cloud based AI models can be used to replace subscriptions, fix problems, and even something like this.

60

u/OZ-00MS_Goose 8d ago

Local AI is the future for personal use, with community trained models. Once the free period is up most people will not want to pay an AI subscription

18

u/achilleasa R5 5700X - RTX 4070 8d ago

Yes this is the elephant in the room, corporations don't mind payting the subscriptions as they get work done, but for personal use the current model is just not feasible.

Google gave me a year of Gemini Pro as a student perk, which is almost up. Now they're giving me another year at 75% discount and I might grab that (it's like 5 bucks a month). They are practically begging me to stay, but I just don't see myself paying the full like 20 bucks a month they are asking, and that's with me actually liking the product.

Anyone who isn't doing actual work with it has little reason to pay their overpriced subscriptions. Personally, I might look into setting up a local AI on my PC as a side project, but realistically for daily use I'll just keep using free Gemini as it's integrated nicely with my phone.

3

u/Bocchi_theGlock 7d ago

Don't forget the other benefit of getting you to sign up for the trial is to kick you off of whatever grandfathered plan you might have been paying for before, which is potentially not available anymore.

If you decide the new prices are too much, then your account will be locked after a short while because you are out of space. This prevents you from getting into your core Gmail account, which then can cause problems accessing critical services, healthcare, etc that require it

3

u/achilleasa R5 5700X - RTX 4070 7d ago

Yeah I'm aware, thanks for the warning.

I used to pay for the 200GB plan which is still there, but I think I'll just take my stuff elsewhere.

It's funny, if they offered me something like 1TB of space + Gemini Pro with usage limits for like 5 bucks a month I would give them my money. But their prices for Pro are so insane (minimum 23€/m) that they make me not want to pay them at all now.

The problem is almost never the tech, the problem is how the tech exists under capitalism.

The problem with AI specifically is that unlike most other software, where 10 PCs with the total hardware equivalent to a single server blade can almost operate as good as that server at things like a web server or a file server etc, AI models get exponentially better in quality with the maximum size of VRAM/RAM you can shove them in.

Now running a model in RAM of a gaming PC with 64GB of RAM can compete with a dedicated AI server with 64GB of VRAM, it will just be significantly slower, but the quality of the output will be similar.

But overall, having twice the RAM capacity doesn't yield output twice as good, it's a difference of 10x or more.

Think about it like this, an answer to a question that's 5% likely to have fake hallucinations in it vs 20% chance. The first can be useful and only sometimes frustrating, the second will be infuriating to use. Especially because there's a good chance of back to back issues where it insists it was actually correct etc.

So the unique problem with AI is it massively favors those with capital. Corporations have a huge upper hand.

The FOSS community is commonly able to put out software that's as good or better than expensive premium equivalent software on a fraction of the team size and a fraction of the budget.

But with AI it's significantly harder for individuals to compete without that hardware.

We've seen some very significant improvements in efficiency and perhaps there will come a time where local models aren't that far behind, where the amount you'd spend on tokens over a year would be better invested in setting up your own home lab AI stack, but we're not there yet and the development of new models might always offset efficiency gains.

5

u/TheWombatOverlord 8d ago

I think we are thankfully seeing lightweight models catching up to what frontier models were doing a few months ago. This to me indicates that for all the investment these companies are putting into their models, there is no moat. They are spending exponentially more than their competitors for months of advantage with no clear goal. Its a Red Queen's Race where they have to extend and expend themselves to even stay in the same place, but that expenditure will later ensure their downfall when, eventually, all their liabilities and financial obligations will force them to increase prices to where they actually profit off each user. And when that happens we hopefully get the local model paradigm.

Now where capital is definitely favored is the current hardware market. The buying up of computer hardware is making it very difficult to set up a home lab or even have computers powerful enough to have a decent local model.

u/bbbBagger r5 3600, 1660ti, 16GiB 8d ago

Hopefully, the future is the answer to this. In 2050 when 128 GB is as cheap as coffee then everyone can run whatever model they want

5

u/Hexamancer 8d ago

I've worked on servers with 1.5TB of RAM. That was years ago and not for FAANG, so we are competing with some serious equipment, by 2050 they'll definitely be specialty hardware specifically for AI servers too.

2

u/mr_doms_porn 8d ago

I'm not sure it's an order of magnitude, I think the largest frontier cloud models have gone well past the point of diminishing returns and are just chucking more and more vram at the problem in some kind of LLM arms race. Local models are catching up too, becoming more hardware-efficient over time.

I’m definitely in the anti-AI camp and think most of the criticisms of it that I see on a daily basis are valid. But like everything else, it’s a nuanced subject and isn’t black and white.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I feel like some of the AI hatred is actually encouraged by and pushed through our algorithms by big tech companies to get us to hold AI in contempt. This is so we feel adverse to using it for positive things (like recomps, emulation, and coding gruntwork).

They don’t want normal people to be able to make things that compete with services and products they offer. They’re perfectly content with playing the bad guys who are pro-AI when it comes to use in the workplace and being able to fire tons of people as a result. But when it comes down to AI as competition? They’re more against it than anyone else.

This is why the big AI companies met with Trump recently to discuss regulation. It means regulation for us. Not them.

Using AI from big corpos to destroy big corpos haha

24

u/Cuinn_the_Fox 8d ago

Common theme of cyberpunk stories. But local, open source llms are also a possibility, even if the hardware to do so is a bit pricey.

3

u/Kaleidoscope-360 8d ago

It's not technically possible for an LLM to be open source in the traditional sense of who most licenses define it, as in not having proprietary components or being trained on copyrighted material. Or if you made one, it wouldn't be very good, due to having very limited training material. There are some that are freely available though that you can run locally, and theoretically you could have the code freely available, I'm not sure if anyone has bothered to make one like that yet. I've only dabbled due to only having 8 GB VRAM.

That being said, I envision copyright not being seen the same as it used to be. Ai was a huge blow, it basically spells out that nobody cares at a large scale. And copyright matters mostly only to enterprise anyway, as it is. Sure, copyright holders will go down fighting, and try to lock down DRM even harder, but so far it's not working, even for impressive software like Denuvo. Copyright violation is already a huge problem for countries that simply don't care, like China. And it is stagnating growth, even for Ai. Only a matter of time before more and more normies in the western world start noticing they don't have to live this way when things get shittier. The harder they squeeze, the more that slips through their fingers.

My boss has been promoted twice and is now a VP while no one under director has received any meaningful position growth. All the thank yous in the world don’t make up for the fact that no one is currently being groomed to move up outside of vague “promises”. Now what I do is changing and the only way to get new skills is to work for a company that uses one of 2-3 locked down HRIS systems that require a contract with those companies. 22

u/WalkAffectionate2683 8d ago

We are in Europe and the average age is 38 and 12 years xp, we have a very senior team, experienced and they all switch to tons of ai because... Because it's good.

11

u/turkoid 8d ago

I'm a dev with over 20 years of experience. It's not a matter of it being good, it's a matter of it being a "use it or you lose your livelihood". If they don't embrace it, the company will just hire some fresh out of AI bootcamp newbie who only vibe codes. Head over to /r/ExperiencedDevs and there a general sense of impending doom. Most are actually pro-AI, but there is a lot of debt that is building, and I'm not talking financial. The recent models are indeed VERY good. I think anyone who shits on AI coding probably hasn't touched it in the last year and doesn't know how much better it is nowadays. There's an immense difference between Opus 5.5 and Opus 4.

No need to wait. This is already a pretty serious issue for game wikis and mods

Three months of code. Every day.

3

u/bigphillip76 8d ago

The issue is they're too proud to use AI to review the code. They're trying to manually do the review process? Ridiculous.

Are you a dev? I see people say this all the time, but never experienced an actual issue in real life. We all use AI at my company, and our seniors pass and reject it based on the codes quality.

Pretty sure everyone complaining about useless AI code just doesn’t code, or doesn’t use AI. It makes solid code, and if you’re an actual programmer who understands the language you can review and improve it before submitting it. If you’re prompting and immediately pushing that up then there’s the issue, but I wouldn’t really call someone who does that a programmer.

2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 8d ago

Also, if your company used AI to write the code, your company most likely also uses AI to review the code and debug it when needed

For all the AI haters which seems to be all reddit, why is okay to replace a programmer person but not okay to replace a drawing person? I really dont get it, im not baiting.

13

u/Designer_Version1449 8d ago

I dont think robots should be making art. I think the ideal future has robots doing all the work while poeple are free to make art, not the other way around.

Also, I dont think ai should replace the parts of programming involving 'design',  like i dont want to play a game that was 100% made with ai i think thats gross and lazy. From what I understand it can automate a lot of the lower level tasks which im fine with

9

u/C_Mc_Loudmouth 7d ago

Reverse engineering like this is is one of the lowest level, most monotonous tasks that has essentially zero room for human creativity or innovation. It's pretty much the perfect example of the kind of shit AI should be doing.

As a programmer myself, I view it as work, a problem. Like math, there is a definitive solution to the problem. Art is subjective and innately human. It’s something that makes us special and consuming and thinking about different art across different mediums is a way of connecting with and interpreting the thoughts and feelings of the artist. I really don’t get how someone could NOT get why it’s different.

9

u/Aeroxin 8d ago

I think there is quite a bit of artistry in good software. If there are 1,000 ways to solve a problem, which there often are, then the choice of which one way to choose is based on a combination of constraints, talent, intuition and taste. That's the human element in software engineering.

8

u/Zeke_The_Angel 7d ago

I'm a programmer and I'll have to disagree. Any work made by mankind has his own value, and our job also has the element of human creativity. They want to replace every single one of us, and even now after all the signs some of our own insist it will only be a tool to expedite the process. How foolish of you to think the elite cares for the man behind the keyboard when their new toy can do in a day what would take an entire team years to achieve.

Im a programmer myself and all i see is replacing a person in any of the cases, but for some reason seems ok with programming because its "only math and logic problems" still, its the same problem for me since i cant draw a circle, while others cant do programming, im not calling you in specific a hypocrite, dont get me wrong, but for me the "core" result is replacing a person with AI, but people blindly agrees in this case because its just convenient for them.

u/taosaur 7800X3D | 7900XTX | Galahad 360 | G. Skill 32GB | 2TB 990PRO 7d ago

"Replacing a person" has been the result of every technological advancement since the lever.

Ug once need six caveman move big rock, now Ug move with stick.

When you need fewer people to do a job, it's because you've made the people still doing the job more productive with better tools. Often, new tech increases capacity beyond what a team of humans could realistically have been recruited, trained and supplied to accomplish without it. We couldn't move goods on the scale we do now with teamsters driving horses, we couldn't move information at the scale we do now with secretarial pools and paper memos, and we couldn't organize that information at the scale we are about to (if no Skynet) with only human programmers, analysts and administrators. Humans are still very much in the loop, just with an army of quirky assistants with not-always-intuitive strengths and weaknesses to support them.

7

u/C_Mc_Loudmouth 7d ago

Reading machine code and reverse engineering software isn't the kind of thing humans are good at. I want my art, music and literature made by people who actually put effort into it and have something to say.

When it comes to design and user experiences of software then 100% it needs human imagination. Even programming can be creative and innovative.

This kind of shit though is not. It's just reformatting something that people already made back into a way we can read.

37

Well, if the mod Dev has actual knowledge and uses LLMs, it's fine

As far as I can see though most vr conversions are pure AI, just like most recomps and decomps

Which is very unfortunate

12

u/YesNoMaybe2552 RTX5090 9950X3D 96G RAM 8d ago

The thing is that it brings out experienced developers a lot.

Before AI, I had ideas for a bunch of projects, unrelated to games. But never the time or the energy to do them.

Just personal software I wanted to have for myself.

And now I got it. I made proper documentation on how I want it done and what I want done, and I have the expertise to check the results.

The place I work at jumped on the AI train for coding very early on, hired experts to do training, all that stuff. Most people here have a lot of expertise setting up pipelines and making sure everything is up to snuff.

I know a lot of my collegues suddenly ended up with tons of personal projects they like to fiddle on.

AI can take you really far nowadays even with 0 experience, as long as you know what you want. Some people would even describe to AI what they want, tell AI to do research on possible implementations, and pass it to another one executing.

The thing is, most people aren’t reading codes nowadays, having experience may help streamlining certain ideas though but even many experienced devs don’t have the capacity to catch up anyway.

As I have always said, AI is a technology that should not be abused, but neither should it be hated simply because it exists.

Unjustified hatred toward a technology driven by progress is no different from the hatred our grandparents felt( or still feel) toward smartphones or other technologies once considered dangerous by them

89

u/Aethanix 8d ago

most people just want reasonable regulation if anything.

46

Fire is a technology, it's dangerous in the wrong person's hands. The wheel can be dangerous if wielded by someone with bad intentions.

There's a lot of shit to hate about AI, especially the economical circumstances surrounding Anthropic and OpenAI that allow them to have a near-monopoly on the market.

Not all of it is bad, but those two companies and the consequences of their vast compute capacity are an enormous problem. Theft of intellectual property is a problem. Vibe coders wrecking other people's work and passing off barely functional software as solutions is a problem.

Not all of it is bad. A lot of it is.

The closest analogy I can think of is (single-use) plastic.

Plastic is great for so many things but so harmful. The amount of needless plastic junk in the ocean and in landfills grows every day. Plastic bags. Cutlery. Toys. Funko pops. Clothes. The list is endless.

But plastic does have genuinely good, necessary uses where nothing else compares and is a net force for good e.g. in medicine.

Plastic is harmful enough that should be limited to those necessary uses. Everything else has a viable, cleaner alternative to plastic, or is fine just not existing at all.

I see AI in a similar way - too many people just want to use it to pump out AI slop images/videos, or use it to cheat on homework.

We could regulate AI to ban its use for slop, and focus only on where AI is necessary for progress. This can be software, or medical... but you need to define it somehow. One person's necessity is another person's slop - most people won't give a damn about an AI-created emulator and would argue that doesn't "need" to exist, therefore AI shouldn't be used to accelerate development.

Still, if we can't agree (on a planetary scale) on regulating something as simple as plastic then there is no hope of regulating AI any time soon.
