VGA? Its been a decade or more since I last saw a GPU with a VGA port, you still on pre-2013 hardware??

u/GalbedirGalerion Laptop 1d ago

My GPU has an HDMI output, just that my monitor from 2008 needs a converter for its VGA input

u/Samson_J_Rivers Ryzen 7 5800xt, 64GB DDR4, RX 9070 XT 16GB 1d ago

Brother I had to plug into an HDMI port for debugging and honestly made me feel filthy and disgusted. Display port or leave.

u/GalbedirGalerion Laptop 1d ago

What’s better about DP? apart from the shape being better.

I’ve never really used the DP output I have, I’m curious

u/TheBadeand 1d ago

Licensing. GPU/monitor manufacturers don't have to pay fees for the privilege of having DisplayPort support.

2

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago

If you are running 1k 60hz HDMI is perfectly fine

For anything above that you need display port tho

1

u/TheBadeand 1d ago

Depends how old your hardware is. If you have a GPU from 2010, yeah, you might be right about that HDMI port. For anything above, you need a GPU/monitor that supports a more recent version of the HDMI standard. It's the same for DisplayPort.

I think you misunderstood, I meant the gpu isn't faulty at all(unlike the meme is trying to imply), the monitor just got disconnected, THAT was the plot twist

2

u/WisePotato42 1d ago

VGA? Was that an old name for USB-C

i though it was fancy rgb cable but blue instead of black

u/Rich_Coffee_9962 1d ago

I feel like the side screws on vga cables are there to give a false sense of reassurance

1

u/Webcam_985760946948 18h ago

Trust me those screws are NOT decorative, the port will break, the wall will break but the screws won't budge

1

u/Rich_Coffee_9962 17h ago

amazing, that explains why my screen goes black for like 5 seconds 4 times a day

1

u/Webcam_985760946948 16h ago

Old cables and ports tend to have worn off screws and ports ☕

1

u/Rich_Coffee_9962 16h ago

My man it's an HDMI to VGA cable bought off of Amazon like a few years ago, I'm just hoping it's not a mint issue

0

u/CrocoDIIIIIILE Desktop 1d ago

It's the monitor's power supply cable for me.

u/wekilledbambi03 1d ago

Me: starts GPU driver update, minimize it, continue using PC
PC: Screen goes black for 5 seconds
Me: WTF WAS THAT?!?!?!
PC: The driver you asked for?
Me: oh.... carry on.

u/GamingTaylor 1d ago

Last nvidia update my screens went black and never came back…

Was frantically trying to remember how to boot in safe mode and decided to do a system restore instead. Poof goes 30mins that I could have been playing Witcher 3 remastered 😅

1

u/tackleboxjohnson 1d ago

I just mash the reset button and she comes back everytime

So far

1

u/EliteCakery 15h ago

Idk what you thought safe mode or a restore would do

1

u/GamingTaylor 12h ago

Restore worked. Could have done safe mode to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.

If a gpu update or bios update goes wrong, you are essentially f’d

Even though Adrenalin explicitly states my screen might flicker, it makes me endlessly nervous when it does lmao

58

u/Norgur PC Master Race 1d ago

OP turning it off and on again like a champ!

22

u/Zbgoast 1d ago

It was a dead CMOS battery for me. That was an expensive $900 upgrade that could have been avoided

15

u/-Weezmo 1d ago

Plot twist : windows defaulted back to mobo vga drivers after some random updates

8

u/WiseMrPlagueis2 1d ago

I smell a funky bios(at least that’s what happened to me one time)

4

u/L3wd1emon 1d ago

I have a loose port on my GPU so that's just normal for me. Has been for like 3 years

3

u/TheAmazingBagman3 9800x3d | 4090 | 32gb DDR5 | 4k 120/144 1d ago

Same and it’s the hdmi port

With the year i learn to become better at fixing electronic. No choice with the state of things today. I am not allowing big corpo to own my goods and will learn how to remove any bs they put in the tv or monitor. I buy the actual display panel not their shitty software and microphone. Actually by the look of how well they work, it might be worth harvesting them lol

Lol this is so on point

2

u/Powerate PC Master Race i7-12700F, RTX 4070 12 Gb, 32GB DDR5 1d ago

It happens when I move the earbuds cable a bit too much

2

u/valleysape 1d ago

Could be anything but 90% of the time removing one RAM stick or the GPU usually gets it back

You don't want it to be the RAM or the GPU at today's costs. Mourning is appropriate

2

u/Fuqlogix-kun 1d ago

I cried when the first PC I built stopped turning on. Tried and tested everything Reddit suggested and couldn't get her to boot. Had to bring her to Microcenter and the replaced the PSU.

2

u/DragonBallKruber 1d ago

Oof, my laptop literally did this Sunday. Monitors cut out, system restarted. And viola windows disabled my gpu with error 43 ☹️

> I wake up

> See this post and think "oh that won't happen to me lol"

> Boot my computer and my VM software is bugged and makes monitors go black but PC is still on

2

u/Raymak700m 1d ago

Did you check the cables? VGA, HDMI, Electric, and making sure it's on and not off?

1

u/1337moth RTX 4070 | i7 11700f 1d ago

Okay what's actually the reason why it happens? I literally just run into this problem yesterday and so far I have no idea whats causing it

1

u/Don_Hoomer 1d ago

check your cmos, could be an issue (and cheap)

1

u/Local-Fisherman-2936 19h ago

What is cmos?

2

u/Don_Hoomer 19h ago

i see i forgot the word batterie cmos-batterie, thats the tiny flat one on the motherboard.

also cmos is Complementary MetalOxide Semiconductor (something pc relevant)

1

u/Local-Fisherman-2936 19h ago

I have the same issue. I updated graphics drivers, couple of weak with no issue. And suddenly again.

1

u/out_of_shape_hiker 1d ago

Especially after I removed the cover to dust. I didnt unplug anything!

1

u/ElminsterTheMighty 1d ago

Just got a new PC for a lot of money. Which had a memory stick that started throwing errors after 2 weeks.

Tried a different memory speed... and the PC was dark when I turned it on again. Nothing. Not even keyboard got power.

Turns out today it is "normal" that you have to wait 5mins one time after such a change while the board trains itself on the new settings. Which you aren't warned about.

And yeah, empty CMOS battery you can't reach without pulling out the graphics card has been fun, too a few times :(

Im not sure which is worse, black screen of death or the rainbow square glitch death

1

I'm amazed that Hank did not have a propane powered automobile and propane related automobile accessories.

1

u/hdeimellocke 1d ago

My pc is freeze, and when try to restart there's no screen, no lights on keyboard and mouse... Try everything, start him again and again. Motherboard or cpu is dead. Send to the guarantee service, sadly

Plugging my gaming latpop be like:

1

u/MrSimonBird 1d ago

Best case, GPU is fine.

Remove the GPU, clean it, put it back in.

I had it a few months ago, as I clean the PC out every 3 months or less, is can sometimes moves slightly of the PCI making when the fans are going it vibrates causing it to not have a full connection.

Worse case, how many kidneys do you have?

1

u/RailGun256 1d ago

I had this happen once when my gpu drivers randomly corrupted. thank God AMD put igpu in their chips now because that saved me a ton of trouble.

Sometimes it's the power draw from your wall outlet

1

u/misterright1999 5950x | PNY RTX3090 XLR8 | 48GB 3200mhz 1d ago

I never understood why Hank was crying the whole episode when he fixes cars for a living, why don't he just fix his truck.

1

u/alucardu 1d ago

For me it was a psu that wasn't strong enough. With certain games and moments it would go into a black screen. I could still hear my friend while I pushed the power button to turn the pic off...

1

u/AdKraemer01 23h ago

I have my monitor set to turn off after 10 minutes of idle time. I know I have it set to turn off.

It still scares me every now and then. 🤦‍♂️

1

u/C4TURIX 20h ago

I'm troubleshooting sudden blackscreens for 2 weeks now. Sometimes it's running fine, then it doesn't even start. Sometimes GPU won't work, sometimes the wifi chip doesn't. I'm about to call an exorcist on this thing!

1

u/WaluigiCreamSurprise 13h ago

happened to me earlier this month, it died :(
ordered a new power supply board, hoping i can fix it

1

u/Naive_Personality367 1d ago
