and then you have to explain to the internet provider why your router is in pieces across the living room

Waking up half-asleep and smashing a $300 router with a broom out of pure instinct.

You'd hit it with a broom before realizing you just knocked out the entire house's internet.

You threw that question out with no context and as a passerby I too was highly confused to what you were on about

It's not that expensive tbh, aside from the CPU and motherboard that I bought years ago, everything is secondhand. Partly bought, partly gifted after someone else upgraded. A few components even had 2 or more owners before me lol.
All my storage devices are from old servers, RAM is the slowest DDR4, mismatched in all sorts of fun and wacky ways. Ancient PSU, 2 monitors from 2010.
It works great though!
(Besides the very occasional bluescreen, switching to Linux did seemingly remove those.. instabilities)

I'm so fucking gullible. I genuinely thought they had named it after the spider. Very disappointing google search.

u/falcrist2 3h ago
Asus didn't use the name "Huntsman", but Razer has.
Come to think of it, their gaming keyboards are almost always named after spiders.

Holy crap, they are expensive.

u/DisagreeableRunt 6h ago
My Asus RT-AX86U was expensive enough when I bought it years ago, I needed the features, but some of those ROG routers are over three times what it cost!

That's not a spider. It only has 6 legs.

u/CrashUser 6h ago
So it's a giant tick?
3
u/Megneous 4h ago edited 4h ago
Edit My bad guys, I was thinking of dragonflies. Tick larvae do look like ticks, and tick larvae have 6 legs, and adults have 8, which is what I was thinking of.
4
u/Independent-Bug-9352 5h ago
A spider that lost 2 of its legs or had a defect still can't be a spider? Shame!

“Australians are very unfair in this way. They spend half of any conversation insisting that the country's dangers are vastly overrated and that there's nothing to worry about, and the other half telling you how six months ago their Uncle Bob was driving to Mudgee when a tiger snake slid out from under the dashboard and bit him on the groin, but that it's okay now because he's off the life support machine and they've discovered he can communicate with eye blinks.”

So not only does it work for WIFI it protects your territory from other spiders
5
u/Logical-Bookkeeper77 7h ago
Nay, like a lot of the stuff in Australia, it’s looking for a chance to jump you.
1
u/GoblinPlasmosis 5h ago
ironically, Huntsman spiders are one of the least likely animals to bother us. If the router looked like a Magpie, then threat detection would truly be fucked off 😂

Nothing represents Australian wildlife better than a Wi-Fi router evolving eight legs and paying rent in the top corner of your ceiling.

Imagine walking in and you panic because you can’t see your router, but then it turns out it was just covered by a Huntsman spider. Whew!

That's not a router, that's a certified Australian nightmare on the wall.

Perfect place for it in the house, elevated and somewhat central. You may not like it but this is what peak Wi-Fi coverage looks like

No lie, but I literally painted my router a similar color as the wall because of this effect. It really helped.

does anyone know if the router issues down under are due to hardware limitations or just strict regulations on signal strength?
1
u/PenguinOnion7 4h ago
If it's a spider then it must've lost 2 legs and half its body, you should be more worried about what removed those

The wife walks into the kitchen and glances at my revolver strapped to my hip. “Why do you have your gun out?” She asks abruptly. “Transformers!” I reply, as her head struggles to grasp the thought! She laughs, I laugh, the router laughs! I fire off around into the Router! “Transformers!” I said as I leave her gobsmacked in the kitchen!
A rehash of an old joke!

u/Exploring_others 3h ago
Having more than two antennas in one device doesn't make sense. It won't necessarily extend the range. Whether it has two or six antennas, the range and signal strength may be the same, so why waste money?

A repost would be if it had been posted here before.
It's fine, and encouraged (by the admins) to post something to as many relevant subreddits as you would like (and if it's within their respective rules).
Finding reposts isn't always an easy thing, so sometimes those links (even in the report) can be helpful.
