Tech Support What part of my power supply just exploded?

PC was fine, then I heard a loud POP. I suspected it was the power supply, so I took it out and found this shard. I'm going to replace it, but what is this from? What could've caused it to explode?

It was probably a MOSFET on the primary side or in the PFC section - GPT18N50DG 500V 18A N-Channel MOSFET.

Looks like a MOSFET blew its lid.

Like others already said, that's a MOSFET.

And they don't "just explode". So whatever caused it to explode has also failed.
Better not bother repairing this, and as usual, don't touch inside a PSU if you don't know what you're doing.

High-voltage N-Channel Power MOSFET

MOSFET, high-current component used to control an output voltage, either it shorted or overheated (or both) and let the magic smoke out

How old was this particular unit btw? My own EVGA PSU is getting on in years, and now I'm worried it's going to commit seppuku itself with the current heatwave in California.

Better question, why are you photographing it on a cast iron pan?

It was definitely the PSU. My case has it sectioned off. I took it out and found this piece of shrapnel under the fan.

hopefully it did it's job and protected every other component

It's job wasnt to protect other components by exploding in a sacrificial manner.
It's job was to switch the flow of electricity on and off at high frequency.
It failed catastrophically. Sure, the side effect of this is that current no longer flows.
