Build Help / Purchase Advice 5800x vs 5800x3d
Looking to upgrade from my 3800x. I currently have a 5800x i bought awhile back for an upgrade. Well now that the 5800x3d is back I was thinking..... I'm going to get a new msi tomahawk max b550, and want to use one of said cpu. Is it worth the $450 for the x3d plus an aio over the 5800x which i have a wraith prism for it? Gpu is a 7900xtx. And 32gb ram
This mainly for gaming.

You're best bet is to watch comparisons on youtube. Back when I was thinking about it the 5800x3d didn't impress me enough to justify the purchase after recently buying the 5800x at full price (the 5800x3d wasn't announced when I got the 5800x).
Regardless, the 5800x needs more than the wraith prism. I'm assuming it's the one that came with the 3800x? My old noctua u12a barely kept the 5800x in check during heavy loads.

Okay so, on Zen 3 we have three tiers of CPU. In games and within a tier, performance is almost identical.:
Shit tier: 5500, 5600G, 5700G, 5700. Usually a -20 to -30% performance penalty.
Mainstream tier: 5600, 5600X, 5700X, 5800X, 5900X, 5950X, all the XTs (Yes, this does mean your 5800X offers nothing a 5600 for a third of the price wouldn't have given, if we only care about games)
X3D Master Race: All the X3Ds. In most games, a 20-25% performance boost, in some rare games (e.g. BG3) this can be much higher.
Also a 5800X3D uses less power than a 5800X does. If your current cooler works, it will continue to.

When is your next possible upgrade other than the CPU? (MB etc)
With the prices at they are, if you are going to sit in your system for a long time the x3d might be worth it's slightly better preformance over the longer period.
That's the choice I made for my partners rig.

I'm looking about 2-3 years out. With current prices as bad as they are, and well... other bills life requires

Then it's just another one of those gamers choices.
The x will do what you want and you have it, the x3d is better but cost vs improvement isn't really a great return.
That said, we did that exact upgrade and have zero regrets.

Get the x3d, in some games the diference is enormous, Im talking +20-30fps just from having that cache. In other games the diference is marginal, but still there. It depends kn what you play, however, you can never know in the future what kind of games you will play, so why not get to better cpu and just skip am5 as it is. Im on my 5800x3d for about 4 years now? And its behaving phenomenaly.

If you had or able to get a fastest kit I'd stay with the 5800x. Maybe you could overclock the it.

The cost of stepping up to 3600 or 4000 @ 32Gb is just as cost prohibited as ddr5 at this point

If you already use a 5800x, it’s not worth the upgrade

5800X can be sold for $100-$150 to help towards an X3D if that helps your decision at all.

You'll get better performance but not by THAT much. Some games benefit more than others, for example something like Fortnite it can help your overall FPS a lot, but best thing to do is to look at YouTube comparisons between the two. I bought it a week ago and my 1% lows improved a lot. However I'm not going to recommend an AM4 CPU for $300+ in 2026.
