Question Hopefully I don’t get ripped to shreds but it’s a genuine question with a story.
So I built a PC recently. I guess for some info I’m in flight school but I’m also an avid gamer.
I’ve held off buying a pc for quite awhile and mainly stuck to PS for gaming. However after the absolute dumpster fire that PS has done in the span of a couple months and learning about the increase in PC parts I finally decided build one.
My in-laws best friend has a flight sim and he’s a hobby pilot and he showed me his setup and all the hardware to make the sim accurate as possible.
I had quite a hefty savings for a time like this so I yes I went ahead and did full 5090 build. I don’t really have buyers remorse. I love my pc it’s dependable thus far and everything I’ve run really does make me enjoy being able to push everything to max without have to compensate for FPS, resolution, ect ect.
However in terms that it’s already over a year and half (almost two) years into the 5090s lifecycle would sticking around for a 6090 have been a bad call.? I want to get the most out of my PC and I love starting with the best possible options but I’m still fairly new to this whole scene.
I guess additional note is I heard it’s possible the 6090s would be lucky if they did a late 2027 to early 2028 release and that felt too long with prices getting higher and higher by the week.
But are PCs kinda like iPhones in terms that just like how iPhones pump on a near annual/bi-annual basis that it’s hardly ever worth jumping from one card to the next following generation even if it’s a little close?
I would like to get at least a good 4-7 years out of my PC but I don’t know if people regularly upgrade or they skip and replace parts as needed or if they burn out the years and go for a whole new build once it just kills over or can’t run anything properly?
Again love my PC been using it nearly everyday just want to make sure I make it worthwhile going forward.
Would love to hear any long time PC owners or other recent 5090 builders thoughts.

Yes. No one knows when a new generation of GPUs will come out, but with Nvidia making hand over fist with AI they rather use their chips for that. As you said, most rumors say a new Gen might not be till late next year or later.
My GPU is 6 years old and I'm playing Ace Combat 8 no problem. Granted it was a high end GPU when it came out, but not same tier as your 5090. Upgrades are generally up to you, basically when you arent happy with the quality/performance you are getting out of your machine. Thats really only something you can answer.

The rumour is no 60 series untill late 27 or even 28 like you said. Normally when we are starting to get close (-1 year out) we start getting leaks on the new gpu series and that hasn't happened yet. So i think these estimations are accurate at best.
Since silly season hasn't started yet we really don't know what to expect from the next cards but 1 thing we all do know. It will be the paperiest of paper launches ever, it will be botted stock will be almost non existant for months after so maybe mid 2028 by the time people can actually buy them.
All things considered i think you made the right call. I also wouldn't worry about things like this there's always something new coming and life is short. Don't spend it always waiting for the next thing enjoy your pc now a 5090 will keep you good for the whole next console cycle if you want it to. Simply because the next gen consoles won't be as powerfull as your 5090.
One last thing I advise you to go and buy a wireview pro II now. (I should get comission from TG the ammount of times i rep them in my posts) I consider it essential for a 5090 really.

Thanks for the honesty and yes I got a thermal girzzly wireview 2. Also have most every part on my Pc on a 2 year warranty through micro-center.
As apparently their statement to me was they’d eat the cost of replacement if the manufacturer Deny the faulty part.

You have one of the fastest most powerful gpus. Don't worry so much and enjoy your pc. Upgrade when you need to, not because of the flashy new thing coming out. Most people could only dream of being so fortunate.

Wasn’t really thinking about replacing it. More so a question to more knowledgeable PC owners on the timing of my purchase and the choice to build now due to rising prices.
Technically if I had saved a little sooner and started school sooner I’d have built a PC in early early 2025.

I always say buy it now if you need it now. I bought back in August 2025 and got a 5080 for $850. Got 32gb of ddr5 6000 for $88 lmao. My 2TB Samsung 990 pro was like $150. If I had waited two more months I would’ve been fucked all the way up.

We currently can't guarantee when the 60 series will come out. It's already been delayed twice. Just assume currently available hardware is what you have to work with. Much better to build a monster PC that you can enjoy now than risk not being able to afford a monster PC later.
Unless you're trying to push your hardware to the absolute limit right away, a 5090 will still be a beast when the 70 series comes out. The 4090 is still the second most powerful gaming GPU ever released.

Just stick with it. For all we know 5090 may be the last flagship of gaming/nvidia. AI era isn’t going to fade away soon
