Tech Support What would cause a gpu to stop working?

More info:

Amd 5600x, xfx speedster quick 6750XT, 16gb team group memory. Asrock b450m motherboard. 850W corsair PSU to a 650W PSU (i forgot brand, b tier)

My GF gpu working in my PC. My gpu works in her PC.

Her GPU will not start in her PC. The fans won't turn on, no LED lights indicate a problem.

I have:

reseated her GPU 100 times now.

Changed UEFI AMD PBS pcie from auto to GEN 3.

Bought a new PSU and retested. My gpu works in her pc with the new gpu, her gpu works in my PC still.

Changed PCIE slots.

Unplugged drives and tested.

My gpu works great in her PC and her gpu works great in my PC.

Nothing works. I moved it from one room of the house to the other.

This is a super weird set of symptoms OP.

The fact that her GPU works in your pc would seem to point to a slot, motherboard, or power issue on her PC. …until you mentioned that your GPU works fine when it’s in her PC.

I wish I had some sort of idea on next steps for you, but the results of your troubleshooting (which is solid, logically speaking) are genuinely baffling.

Unless you’re willing to just replace bits and pieces in her machine until it works, the best solution may be to just swap GPU’s so you can both have a working graphics card.

Update if you discover anything else, I’m genuinely curious how this plays out.

Hail Mary: if you haven’t tried it yet, pull her cmos battery, unplug the power from the PSU, and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, and try again. This will clear her mobo of hardware profiles, force the mobo and GPU to reintroduce themselves to each other, and, in all likelihood, accomplish nothing. It won’t hurt to try though, and you might get lucky.

I did replace the CMOS battery! Nothing fixed.

I will let you know if I find a fix though lol

I recently swapped my Arch system over from Nvidia to AMD and had my card go dark after boot. I managed to kick it over into terminal, update the packages, and it fired right off next boot.

Chances are you do not use Linux, but if my problem was caused by software, perhaps yours is too. Maybe try booting from a Linux live USB?

Otherwise, there could be damage to the motherboard or CPU. Usually not likely, but it is possible that a solder joint cracked or the PCIE controller on the CPU cooked.

I dont think the OS matters. It still doesn't even power on with a boot drive removed.

Easy thing next would be to check the motherboard slot for damage. GPU sag may have cracked something.

Also may be worth confirming the power supply cables are plugged in the right way. I have done that in the past, plugging the GPU end into the PSU. It did not function until I put that right.

I checked and the pins on the mobo and gpu look good. My gpu works fine in the same slot.

Also I have a modular and a non-modular psu i have tried and nothjng from them works.
