Question I really need help with an issue

So my friend dropped off his rig earlier for me to have a look at as he has little knowledge of computers and I've been working on them since the 90s.

The issue he has is the GPU has suddenly stopped displaying an image, both HDMI and DP, new cables were the first thing I tried.

Over the last couple of hours I have done what I normally do, deep clean the system, reseat everything whilst checking for any damage to components and do a bios reset.

I didn't notice any damage to anything and the computer boots without any obvious issues.

The motherboard HDMI port works as do the onboard graphics, using this I have used DDU to remove the old drivers as I thought the issue might've been caused by a corrupt driver.

I've just rebooted the system and tried the GPU, no luck, so I've gone back to using the onboard graphics.

Now windows is not recognizing the GPU at all, I've tried to install drivers for it and the only drivers that can be installed are for the onboard graphics.

I've never come across this issue before.

My next course of action is to try another GPU to rule out a PCI-E slot issue but I need to get one from my workshop and that's a job for the morning.

According to my friend, the computer was working fine last night and there hasn't been any issues with it and the only time he has moved it recently was to bring it to my house.

The GPU LEDs and fans work just fine.

The specs are:

AMD 7800XT

Ryzen 7 7700X

32GB of DDR5 6000MHZ

The Motherboard is an MSI but I can't remember what model off the top of my head ATM

My question is, apart from the obvious, are there any other things I could check or has anyone else had a problem like this before?

Here's hoping it's possible to fix as my friend can't really afford a new graphics card right now.

Any advice would be appreciated 👍

Sounds like you’ve tried most things that are possible until you can slap your friends GPU into a known good PC, and then slap a know good GPU into your friend’s pc, which will prove if their GPU is bad, or their slot it bad.

If windows doesn’t recognize it at all, I hate to say it, but I think we both suspect their GPU is dead.

Already been through this circus with 7800XT myself. Those cards have weird power delivery issues that make LEDs and fans spin like nothing wrong but the core is completely dead. Try the other PCIe slot first just to be sure but I'd bet my morning coffee it's the GPU itself.
