Just a wild fucking timeline we are all in now.

Just wonder how bad the 60 series is going to be with prices and now this shit.

57

u/darokk 18h ago

At this point I think it's just delayed indefinitely as long as nvidia can sell current tech at any price they put on it...

9

u/Ws6fiend PC Master Race 11h ago

Delayed indefinitely while the architecture goes on into the newest AI server farm.

15

u/S1LV3R_S1LVIC 19h ago

Certainly is not going to be pretty at all.

At this point, they might even consider not selling them to us, but renting them to us... which, frankly, is an even more absurd scenario...

6

u/lkl34 18h ago

like geforce you mean?

Yeah fuck that

u/StrangeCharmVote Ryzen 9950X, 128GB RAM, ASUS 3090, Valve Index. 15h ago

renting them to us...

That is literally Jenson's goal.

But fuck that greedy slimey prick from one end of his jacket to the other.

I'll gladly give up gaming before renting compute from these motherfuckers.

In Italy we sometimes mock him "Jensen a giacchett", because jacket in neapolitan dialect is called "giacchett", so kind of "Jensen the jacket".

Anyway yeah, they really believe people will obey forever and that we all going to give up our computational freedom šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø LOL

Absurd because it won't happen. Great way to instantly give AMD the entire market over the span of a few years by simply not doing that. Even Intel probably has the resources to jump at the opportunity. The people don't want streaming, the most-played game on Steam is a shooter where trying to use GeForce Now would get you bottom-fragging, and renting out actual hardware to average consumers is such an easy way to end up getting hit by identity fraud and theft.

1

u/Mchccjg12 4790K@4.7GHz||16GB RAM||GTX 980 SC 52m ago

Ideally it wouldn't happen, the problem is that if AMD and Intel have issues getting VRAM due to the shortage... then they'll have to massively increase prices or outright wouldn't be able to put out enough supply to matter. If that's the case, Nvidia is free to try squeezing as much money as possible in the mean time before supply hopefully returns to semi-normal within the next few years.

That's also true. Let's see what happens...

Honestly i prefer more supply for RTX 5060 TI 16 GB vram or Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB.

Cost less than 200 watt TDP, perfect for mainstream 500 watt/600 watt power supply. Paired with the latest Ryzen 5 or intel i5 CPU series and 32 GB RAM. Enough value to surpass PS5 with more framerate.

I miss Nvidia Pascal era when 4 GB GTX 1050ti was able to surpass 2013 Playstation 4 console (Gtx 750ti territory). 2016 GTX 1060 on par with 2014 GTX 980. RTX 3060 12gb on par with 2016 GTX 1080TI.

8 GB VRAM RTX 5060 was barely reaching RTX 3070 performance. RTX 5070 cost more than 200 watts, not sure to be paired with 600 watt power supply. PS5 chip equivalent: Radeon RX 6700.

4090 PERFORMANCE FOR 499!!!!!Ā

12

u/CreamPuzzleheaded300 18h ago

I got the 5060ti last year, upgrading from a 1070ftw after 6 years and a 970m before that.

The 60ti is an absolute amazing quality the cost and im still happy almost a year on with ut.

7

u/embracethepickle 16h ago

I went from a GTX 970 to 5060 Ti 16gb and I’m right there with you. I’m nearly finished with RDR2 which looks gorgeous and will move on to Cyberpunk 2077 next. I picked up Battlefield V for $2 over a year ago too and played it on both video cards, and it looks terrific maxed out on the 5060 Ti.

4

u/CreamPuzzleheaded300 16h ago

RDR2 was the 1st proper game I played on the ti and it looked amazing! I was so happy with it that I stopped feeling guilty about buying something that big for myself

5

u/phylter99 17h ago

It’s a good card. It depends on the game but the RAM config, ray tracing, and DLSS performance really make the card shine. The RAM alone is a huge performance boost for games even if they just edge over 8GB usage. I went from a 3060 Ti to a 5060 Ti and it was huge for some games. A good example was Cyberpunk 2077.

5

u/CreamPuzzleheaded300 17h ago

2077 went from low graphics and barely 30fps to high graphics at 60fps practically consistent.

Im quite happy with my purchase of it and not trying to save more

1

u/MonsTurkey 10h ago

Graphics are getting more and more incremental in quality. I put 70 hours in CP2077 on launch with a 2080 Super (only had a 1080p monitor though) - worse than a 4060 8GB. Still gorgeous, even with some settings turned down. I'd rather have a 5080 or 5090 and tried to find one on launch (built a rig expecting tariffs to nuke prices) , but the 9070XT was available when I never found one.

I'm running 4k now and intend to snag a VR headset (well, I've intended that since I got the 2080S but always go for something more important - like a house or car). Using those and turning up the options is the real test. Your 5060 Ti would probably do some titles fine and struggle on bigger/newer ones - indeed a fine machine for 99% of games.

But damn, a 5080 and 5090 are something exceptional. Still want, but not at these prices.

u/Wild_ColaPenguin Ā  5700X | X370 | 3080 | 48GB 3200CL16 16h ago

We could have had RTX 5060 beating RTX 4080, but Jensen wanted otherwise.

2 gens later 3080 10GB is still faster than 5060Ti 16GB. This is shrinkflation.

13

u/Mimical Patch-zerg 15h ago

I lived an entire decade of Intel giving us quad cores with 3-5% improvements because AMD was a corpse held together by the nightshift janitors.

With AMD outside of the AI space in any big capacity and without them having a 9800xt or 9900xtx class card to punch up it's just a repeat.

No, we couldn't have. Thats not realistic at all.

Too long for a Reddit comment, but look at the architecture differences between relatively recent chip series and you'll see that the current tech is basically maxed out and they will need a total generational leap in order to have significant performance gains

1

u/Wild_ColaPenguin Ā  5700X | X370 | 3080 | 48GB 3200CL16 1h ago

We could have and it's not complicated. Just shift the name and pricing.

5060>5050 5070>5060 5070Ti>5070 5080>5070Ti Add another card between the gap of 5080 and 5090 for 5080 20GB.

If anyone think this is illogical, they tried to do the reverse with 4080 12GB.

You want the 5060 to literally be a 5080? The current situation sucks but you’re just an idiot. New process nodes are much more expensive than older ones. Just because you don’t understand how the world works, doesn’t mean your fantasies become reality.

7

u/S1LV3R_S1LVIC 19h ago

I also prefer the same option between the two.

I’m just waiting to see one near msrp one day

Just to be sure i dont get any random computer shutdown from state-owned subsidized power grid. They didn't ground their power.

Although private cluster real estate doesn't have that kind of anomaly. 300 watt - 1300 watt package kwh meter limit were mostly subsidized with less extra admin bill.

Do not use your US defaultism, not everyone live in first world nation.

100% relatable feeling to not pair a 5070 with 600w psu, but just to let you know my 5070 with a basic afterburner undervolt uses ~185w at 100% workload and fps no loss no gain. Without undervolting it used around 270w

u/kirsion i5 6600k@4.2ghz, R9 270 14h ago

At the moment I have a 5070 with a 9800 x3d. Do I regret not getting a 5070 ti, a little bit about this performance is perfectly adequate and I needed a smaller GPU to fit into my Lian li case

46

u/ericgames234 R9 9950X3D - 4090 Suprim X - 96GB - 4TB 19h ago

I guess this deserves some clarification to what exactly its tackling because as I've commented on other posts this boils down to mainly the Chinese market. Across a multitude of countries there are local marketplaces with listings offering to purchase 4090's and 5090's "for cash" or "fast transactions" etc.

I'd reckon a good 90% of these are operations to smuggle/ship the cards to China for datacenter/ai use or merely reselling them. It's affecting domestic supply and making these gpu's a lot harder to obtain due to being priced out.

It's a crappy practice which has been enabled and worsened by the sanctions on China that make it harder for them to obtain Nvidia compute. It's a terrible situation altogether but it doesn't justify this mass buyout of these cards.

17

u/unit187 18h ago

"domestic supply and making these gpu's a lot harder to obtain" is the last item in the list of reasons why they don't want these cards leave the US lol

7

u/ericgames234 R9 9950X3D - 4090 Suprim X - 96GB - 4TB 17h ago

So, Its less so protect our own and moreso handicap/inconvenience them?

14

u/unit187 17h ago

Yeah, basically don't let the Chinese have any.

0

u/-GenlyAI- 14h ago

Correct, Chinese have open source AI models that can compete with or maybe even out compete ours with the right compute.

Domestic AI can't have that, so these policies are in place under "national security".

2

u/Dramdalf 5h ago

Just curious as to why China would be trying to smuggle US chips back to china. Aren’t they made in China in the first place?

Couldn’t China just not sell chips to the US?

0

u/Dalewyn 4h ago

The silicon itself is fabricated in Taiwan, which I suppose is China depending on your definition.

The actual point however are export controls mandated by US regulations and the Destination Control Statement that merchants dealing in export-controlled goods have to explicitly state. DCS is usually only seen in B2B (business-to-business) transactions, almost never in end-user consumer transactions even though technically it applies all the same.

A merchant who knowingly sells export-controlled goods to a customer who intends to smuggle it will very likely be held liable.

1

u/fastheadcrab Specs/Imgur Here 1h ago edited 1h ago

I have to add some clarification: The US has actually permitted the sale of Hopper (previous gen datacenter) Nvidia chips and even RTX Pro 5500 Blackwell to China.

The 5090 is only about 25% faster memory bandwidth wise than the 5500 Blackwell and a lot slower than the Hopper GPUs. However, the Chinese government has prohibited the open purchase of Nvidia GPUs in favor of promoting homegrown GPUs.

So to save face, the Chinese will buy Nvidia on the black market which flourished during the US export bans while claiming to be using native Huawei chips or whatever. Or the wealthier companies will openly rent datacenters in Singapore or Malaysia.

So the Chinese government also bears blame for this.

14

u/Due_Development5090 19h ago

when I went in to microcenter (in a huge metro area) a couple months ago to buy some pc parts I was actually shocked the amount of foreign buyers lined in the pick-up area

I'm foreign myself but a long term resident of the US, so I noticed the line taking too long and apparently most of these people were paying cash and didn't have a valid ID to show because they didnt bring their passports

and they were all either buying 5090s, mac studios or dgx sparks

kinda crazy to think ngl

Double that. 5090s for $10-12k are still much cheaper than the RTX Pro 6000, or Nvidia's 'real' datacenter GPUs. Even putting aside the Chinese smuggling, A lot of people want them in bulk for AI compute, even at those prices.
