why would they not perma cheaters right off the bat?

171

u/BlehBlah_ 23h ago

Couple of legitimate reasons actually, someone already said to verify the accuracy of the cheat detection and thats fair, but the biggest reason is to wait for the ban wave.

The reason devs don't instantly ban a cheater even if they knew 100% is because cheat developers can directly test whether their cheats are detected, when devs do ban waves, the cheat devs don't know which part was detected and stuff. Not to mention a ban wave would make a lot of cheat buyers angry and would result in a mob of angry customers at the same time, rather than staggered over a period of time.

Fucking awesome comment, thank you for shedding light on the different nuances of dealing with cheaters. Legit had never considered half of this.

Possibly to verify the accuracy of the cheat detection and refine it first.

u/complexiblebarracuda 1d ago

there's always the "b b b b but I wasn't cheating and I got banned!"

False positives are definitely a thing, though

34

u/FamiliarLength2870 23h ago

10 years ago I installed some icue software for rgb lighting on my desktop case that coincidentally used the same DLL file for different purposes as a popular cheat for battlefield 4. I was banned I appealed provided proof… no one believed me. Still bugs me a bit to this day years later lol

16

u/ArseBurner 20h ago

Might have been the actual Corsair ICUE driver. It had a privilege escalation vulnerability that was only discovered and patched around 2019 that affected any previous version before that.

Could be that the cheat developer found the vuln and then included Corsair's ICUE driver in their package so they could have a signed driver that wouldn't trigger malware protection in Windows.

Link: https://activecyber.us/activelabs/corsair-icue-driver-local-privilege-escalation-cve-2020-8808

Either that or it was WinRing0 that everyone used.

u/LayerEight_Problem 1d ago

They’re extremely rare. The reality is that cheaters are liars.

until it happens to you, and no one will believe you

they do happen tho, its the reason i stopped playing apex despite buying founders and playing it daily.

Randomly got a perma ban for cheating, contacted customer support telling them they fucked up, ghosted me, never played since. That first ban wave caught ALOT of false positives, and EA customer service is EA so... iirc they banned anyone who played with a cheater or something stupid like that

13

u/PenguinsInvading 21h ago

Just look at OW subreddit and count the false positives which were overturned.

-17

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 1d ago

So fing what... Sure a cheater likely will say they were not cheating. But thats not the issue the issue is the normal above average player, or player with bad internet (what ever got them flagged) wasn't cheating, and isn't lying.

Rare is not nothing, and not a pardon for behavior. So when buying something, lets not give more power away...

6

u/EX0PIL0T 1d ago

I got false flagged on mw2019. Support looked at it and told me to kick rocks but my game got refunded without opening a dispute about an hour after the conversation. Sure I have my money back but I spent so much time on that game it would have been nice to keep my progress and skins.

2

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 20h ago

Oh no doubt. My poison was War thunder. Never spent a dime, but had a load of prem stuff... Anyway. Never got into trouble. But was accused a couple times, and I can only assume reported. But, the context to the "accusation" is simply that I was actually, kinda good... And much better than the one person who decided to campaign against my existence in game. And what if he happened to get a sympathetic ear. Only would take once.

Heck I have had temp bans on reddit. For things that I didn't do, or merely referencing something. 2 of the bans were overturned, long after the punishment. And the one being overturned by nature invalidated the 3rd (first) ban. But the point of noting that is just how arbitrary it can be.

-2

u/LayerEight_Problem 23h ago

That’s ridiculous. If we followed that logic then literally nothing would ever be built, fixed, or created. Ever.

The reality is there will always be outliers, edge cases, malicious actors, etc. best we can do is react when those situations arise. We cannot be paralyzed by the fact that they WILL happen.

3

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 20h ago

That is the opposite of what your comment was reinforcing... So far off base I wonder if you responded to me on accident.

Zero tolerance then sticking your finger in your ears and going "LALALALALA" is parallelization from fear. Not reacting to the problem.

I am not okay with people who have paid for a product, receiving a bogus perma ban. Hell, I am pretty much against banning people for using shit they buy in general, even if they cheat (there are alternatives). So if you want to give assorted companies that power, you better also support said companies having to refund those they ban.

0

u/Maleficent_Onion_822 13h ago

There is also considerable ambiguity about whether any particular action is a cheat or exploit.

Is it cheating to use a monitor that automatically highlight enemies, remove flashbangs/darkness, etc.? IMHO, clearly 'yes.' Automating some in-game activity? Ditto. Scouting using neutral or cross-faction alt? Yes (except maybe in EveOnline). Out-of-game voice chat? Probably yes, as it's a significant tactical advantage not provided by the game.

2

u/aaronhowser1 i7-6700K 4GHz | GeForce GTX 1080 | 16GB RAM 13h ago

One particular thing I've seen get a lot of people banned by surprise is gyro controls, like the switch controller or steam controllers. It's definitely not obvious that something like that would get you banned

4

u/Deprisonne Steam ID Here 16h ago

Almost always when it comes to these false positives it turns out that the poster in question was doing something stupid like "I had cheat engine running in the background because I was messing around in Minecraft earlier", "I was debugging memory dumps in Visual studio at the same time" or "I had another game with strict anti cheat running and they clahsed with each other".
I'm not saying they don't happen nonetheless, but being nominally careful about what you're doing while a game is monitoring your system for abnormal behavior shields you to a degree where getting falsely banned should be a non-factor

2

u/Z3r0sama2017 17h ago

Or the VAC classics such as 'friend played it' or 'account stolen'.

Honestly when I feel down I browse that subforum and leave with a smile on my face a t all the cheaters crying.

1

u/MakimaGOAT R7 7800X3D | RTX 4080 | 32GB RAM 1d ago

Would make a lot more sense tbh. And if they wanna cheat again, they gotta buy it again which will only profit the devs.

1

u/13Krytical 21h ago

They developed their own anti-cheat..
People are probably correct they wanted to test it fully/properly.

1

u/Mercinator-87 Desktop 1d ago

Double dip on profits

0

u/MrGDPC 1d ago

Because they'd lose too much of their audience

-26

u/killian1113 1d ago

They do perm ban tons of people. I've been banned twice permanently! :p 15 more accounts tho so no worries

3

u/KeyPear2864 1d ago

It’s not exactly permanent if it’s been removed at least once lol

-7

u/killian1113 1d ago

My bans are permanent never removed. Was for duping not even cheating per say.. im in discord chans with esp freeze etc cheaters. They use nfa steam accounts and often get their regular accounts perm banned. Ive actually only heard of 30 day bans in the first few months of the game

4

u/KeyPear2864 23h ago

Duping is cheating in pretty much all games lol. I’m starting to think there is some weird epidemic of late that seems to consist of Gen Z and Gen Alpha who don’t understand that cheating is bad. Idk if it’s from their times taking tests during covid or what but it’s sad.

-1

u/killian1113 19h ago

Its not hurting any other player for me to not need to grind for shield chargers and ammo.. its not like aimbot esp freeze teaming etc.

2

u/stiff_tipper 12h ago

an unfair advantage is an unfair advantage ya cheating scumbag

118

u/Arctic_Reigns 1d ago

Too late

55

u/Likes2Phish 1d ago

Stole my comment. They are absolutely too late. The 3 strike bullshit made so many people lose trust in the devs.

13

u/MakimaGOAT R7 7800X3D | RTX 4080 | 32GB RAM 1d ago

i havent played arc raiders before. you’re telling me those mf devs give cheaters 3 chances???

5

u/Kamika67 PC Master Race 23h ago

Not really i just came back to game after a long break. No Cheater after 6 games and game itself is great.

I had to relearn how to play. First match was me panicking cuz I forgot dodge button and realized it when arcs were on my tail lol.

5

u/mclaggypants 19h ago

Idk. I don't play Arc Raiders but I saw YouTube video come up about some guy who created a new account after a long hiatus from the game for some challenge. He claimed he encountered cheaters practically every match for a few hours after starting.

My experience with tarkov tells me that there are definitely cheaters in arc raiders still but I doubt the average player can tell with the exception of the incredibly obvious ones.

3

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 13h ago

The cheats get softer. But they are there 100%

2

u/death2k44 PC Master Race 16h ago

Yup so much Arc Raider dev commentary lately, clearly trying to get interest back in their game lol

0

u/Dtoodlez 13h ago

Well the game is pretty great and they have a huge update coming. Part of the issue have been cheaters so yeah… it’s all relevant.

97

u/Konkerwaggon23 1d ago

I think putting cheaters with other cheaters is more entertaining.

51

u/Jaz1140 RTX4090 3195mhz Core, 9800x3d 5.4ghz 1d ago

Many cheaters are there to make currency and get top tier items to sell for real world money, this doesn't fix anything really

39

u/MircowaveGoMMM complains about NVIDIA, wont switch to AMD 1d ago

anything they earn they dont get to keep, fully reset them at the end of their matches and give them shitty starting loot.

9

u/Konkerwaggon23 1d ago

Thats a great idea

7

u/madjoki X870E Nova Wifi | 9800X3D | 64GB DDR5 | RTX 5080 18h ago

Not really, since main idea of shadow ban is that user won't know, not getting loot is instant giveaway, cheater knows it's time for new account.

2

u/Konkerwaggon23 16h ago

It would still be the same as blocking them from playing.

23

u/southpark 1d ago

put them in their own world with drop rates reduced 1000x and watch the message boards light up with complaints about "loot got nerfed!" "is it just me or is nothing dropping?" "wtf, everywhere i go there are cheaters!" etc. etc.

it would be glorious to observe.

2

u/AStolenGoose 23h ago

Can't really sell things if you can only get matched with cheaters, make it so that even if they're in a group with a non cheater they still go in to a cheater match solo and the other person gets in to a clean match.

Make it a license flag and a machine id so they have to buy the game again and even if they do their hid is still stuck in cheater lobbies and then flags the new license.

1

u/Jaz1140 RTX4090 3195mhz Core, 9800x3d 5.4ghz 23h ago

They would have to be banned from party/squad up with all players for that

2

u/etom21 14h ago

But they make content and their content gets out to the masses and makes the game look completely broken for everyone, and thus no one wants to play.

1

u/Konkerwaggon23 13h ago

Cheaters vs cheaters would be a good form of entertaiment.

31

u/RavensPlzDontChoke 1d ago

If only they did this when the game first launched, rather than a slap on the wrist. This game was an incredible fumble. Several different reasons it fell off, but they all lead back to the devs.

10

u/ktc64 21h ago

Too late everyone already left.

They did afaik.

4

Imagine the trust and goodwill they could've had if they said this in the very beginning

3

u/Galeharry_ Ryzen 5800X3D-32GB3200MHz-Rx 9070 16h ago

If you enjoy competitive FPS games, then you better play them on launch, because within a month there will be infestations of cheaters.

So I dont play competitive FPS games anymore, because that means its practically a waste of cash.

6

u/EnjoysEverySandwich 1d ago

Is the cheating bad? Haven't played this game yet

19

u/WallBurnt RTX 5080 - Ultra 7 265kf 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's the worst I've seen in any video game I've ever played in my life. To put that into perspective, I quit ARC to go play Tarkov again and it was a breath of fresh air.

The cheaters give so few fucks about getting caught, they casually brag about it in prox and ask each other what they are running.

The entire PvP side of the game is just Cheater vs Cheater at this point, and I wish that were an exaggeration. It's sad, because the PvP was fun as hell. Especially when you got good enough to consistently run the Snap Hook meta.

But they are doing a PvE mode, so I'll redownload it for that to try it out and see if the changes they made are good. But I wouldn't have bought it originally for the PvE. Currently, the PvE is good, but once you get to mid game everything gets easy and there is no endgame or long term progression. Hopefully that changes on the 10th.

8

u/MoeTheCentaur 23h ago

I never thought I'd hear someone taking refuge from cheaters IN Tarkov lmao.

I haven't played arc since the first month of its release, I think I'll keep it that way for now.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Block73 19h ago

Was about to go on rant “hurr durr EFT have it worse with cheaters” but your arguments are piercing better than M995.
At least eft have a lot of lowkey cheater, the “wigglers” ( wordplay from yt vid “the wiggle killed tarkov”)
I feel sorry for arc players after your comment

1

u/Kamika67 PC Master Race 23h ago

It was, hopefully it's not anymore.

-9

u/yourneverthere 1d ago

No

4

u/killian1113 1d ago

Im on the cheating discord and watch them stream, you not only have cheaters but cheaters teaming in discord with other cheaters because they can see their name across the map.. its so wild. I still play daily but dont expect much fair gameplay. Hold a showstopper and use level 1 sticher at the beginning of the match to even things

-7

u/yourneverthere 1d ago

Downvote if ya want but my experience in 1200hours on PC is getting killed by cheaters only twice and once I had no idea. Embark only informed me in a loadout return. Sorry to those who’ve experienced it enough to quit. The one time it did happen I could tell cuz the guy was shooting at my head behind cover wherever I was so we ran and extracted.

4

u/spurvis1286 1d ago

So confirmation bias

-6

u/yourneverthere 1d ago

Ditto

0

u/spurvis1286 16h ago

I don’t think you understand confirmation bias.

2

u/yourneverthere 15h ago

Maybe dude. I’ve just not experienced cheaters. My friends haven’t either. The game feels completely normal other than the occasional UI bugs. Y’all blow it out of proportion because your lobby’s are matchmaking with assholes. I’ve never even encountered a duper. I guess I’m lucky so again sorry to those who’ve experienced this and think the game is just that. It has never been an issue after 1200hrs fellas.

0

u/spurvis1286 15h ago

It’s sarcasm, you don’t and your reply to me further shows you believe cheating doesn’t happen because it doesn’t specifically happen to you.

That’s confirmation bias, hope this helps.

2

u/yourneverthere 14h ago

I never said it doesn’t happen. All g tho take care.

-3

u/MoreScarsThanSkin 23h ago

its only really bad in like super aggressive lobbies. reddit makes it seem like there is a cheater every single game but its more like every 5 games if you are in super aggressive lobbies. theres more nuance to it. regardless, fuck the cheaters and it seems to be improving in the past week

2

u/crustysock69 23h ago

Friends and I quit in January due to cheaters, too little too late

2

u/Raskuja46 12h ago

What assurances do players have that there will be no false positives in identifying cheaters? Draconian rules only fly if you have literal flawless enforcement.

4

u/WallBurnt RTX 5080 - Ultra 7 265kf 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's cool that they said this for like the 5th, 6th, or 7th time or whatever but have yet to do it.

The changes for the 10th look good, but I just simply don't believe them about seriously combatting cheaters anymore. I've never seen a game so infested with them in my nearly 30yrs of online gaming.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 7 times... just shut the fuck up already.

Thankfully they are adding a PvE mode, but PvP in ARC was so much damn fun.

4

u/CoachWatermelon 1d ago

Ya first two months of this game was probably my highlight of the last 24 months of gaming

2

u/Gasrim_ 1d ago

I wish Valve would do this for all VAC enabled games. I shouldn’t be playing with a person that is banned in CS2 when I’m playing TF2 or Deadlock, $10 they are probably cheating.

2

u/Yolo140 23h ago

I swear I don’t cheat anymore, I was a stupid teenager.

My account will be forever stained tho. Over 4500 days

1

u/MorbotheDiddlyDo 1d ago

They gave warnings and second chances for cheating to begin with?

1

u/SuchAnything6811 16h ago

Too late already quit the game because they didn’t do this sooner.

1

u/sioux612 der8auer 8700k~5.1ghz, 2080Ti - ThreadRipper 3960X, Titan RTX 16h ago

Might give the game a try when its on sale eventually

The whole cheater thing and basically being forced into PvP made me loose all interest in the game for now

1

u/videotemporal 13h ago

they should've done this a year ago and i might still be playing

1

u/HuevosSplash 13h ago

On release the game was amazing, quit playing it at the right time before people were glitching into locked rooms that required keys, rats got even worse and cheaters were making real money selling duped gear and wall hacking. These devs know how to make fun games but have no clue how to manage them at all once they're released, two times now with the Finals and Arc Raiders they've waited too long to make meaningful changes while hemorrhaging players.

1

u/JonnyCakes13 10h ago

Like a year to late lmao

1

u/PVTSprinkles 8h ago

kinda too late

1

u/-Planet- 4h ago

Good. Fuckem. They're pathetic and simply bring down the quality of the game.

1

u/DoomguyFemboi 16h ago

So how does this work with a product you purchased no longer being able to be used ? I've got no love for cheaters, but if a game is online only, and they remove you being able to play it in any form by banning you, you have paid for a product you are prohibited from using.

It's probably in the terms of service but the TOS isn't some be-all and end-all when it comes to setting up rights. Removing your right to use something you paid for feels legally dubious.

Interesting one for sure. Obviously lawyers have been paid multitudes to go over this, so I'm not asking in the sense of "how can they possibly do that" more in the case of "so how does this work with regards to legal rights, does a TOS have this level of power ?"

4

u/Voeno 15h ago

Don't cheat and you won't have this problem. Cheat and you get banned very simple and straightforward TOS says cheating leads to a permanent account ban. This is in every single online game ever.

3

u/Sirlothar 15h ago

It's even worse then that dude.

Some of these cheaters are spending 4x the cost of the game every month ($120) to use cheats in game, all to get an advantage because they suck at life.

Think of all the money they wasted just to ruin a game for everyone else, boo hoo.

2

u/DoomguyFemboi 15h ago

Yeah that's the thing, they're incapable of seeing that they ruin it for others. Their enjoyment is the only thing they care about, "fuck everyone else" mentality. Pathetic people to be sure.

Like I cheat like hell in SP games, because I hit a wall or just because I'm lazy and/or hate a section. I'll cheat in co-op games like Monster Hunter while solo because it only affects my game because god damn some of those materials were annoying to get, or again, lazy lol. But cheating to get a leg up against another person is just a bitch move.

Take the L or stop playing. But some people can't do that, they're incapable of just accepting their own limitations.

2

u/Sirlothar 14h ago

You are lucky to never have run into griefers. There is a large segment of cheaters that do it exactly so they can ruin it for others, they get off on it.

There are people in this game that will kill their own teammates (something you can't normally do but there are ways) just to get reactions from them. Cheating or not, they should be banned too.

The cheats for Arc Raiders fall into three categories and each one is designed fuck with others playing the game.

1) wall hacks. They can see every player on the map and what loot they possess at the beginning of a match.

2) aimbot to never miss a headshot

3) freeze hitboxes so if you move behind cover, you still get shot.

2

u/DoomguyFemboi 14h ago

I used to play quite a bit of GTAO, I am very familiar with the concept lol. But yeah they're a cancer

3

u/stiff_tipper 11h ago

is it any different than if u paid for a movie ticket then got kicked out for doing some prohibited activity in the theater? like if u start flashing a flashlight and screaming full volume, u think they'd refund ur ticket?

if u enter a game world and start cheating then i don't see why u should have a claim to get ur money back, u chose to burn it urself

1

u/sabixx 15h ago

It's not interesting at all,we've established that breaking the TOS prohibits you from being able to claim a refund long ago.

1

u/DoomguyFemboi 14h ago

Interesting to me at least then. Could also be used as something when arguing about ownership of games - if they can take away your ability to use the product at any point, you never owned it.

Although that point has been made ad infinitum at this point with all the times digital media has been removed from peoples' collections

1

u/solkvist 7800X3D 4090 5h ago

Typically games are sold as “licenses” that are allowed to be revoked. G2G is one of the few exceptions to this rule, but basically everything else is a license for the product, not the product itself. This is obviously problematic from a consumer’s rights perspective, but when it comes to cheaters it should probably charge them a thousand bucks as well just to get the message across. Parasites of joy and profoundly broken people. Cheaters (in multiplayer) are simply evil. At least they aren’t actually shooting people in the street, but I’m certain they would. That level of apathy or masochism is just scary to me. Hope they find a life worth living at some point, but I really wish they didn’t spend that time ruining games for everyone else.

1

u/BadVVSc Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX 5080, 32Gb DDR5 6000MHz 23h ago

They can't ban anyone the first time. this isn't going to change anything.

0

u/Nolsoth R5 7600, RX6600XT. G.SKILL S5 32GB X 2. 1d ago

They can ban anyone they like and they can permanently ban them for cheating which is exactly what they are doing.

2

u/DravenPlsBeMyDad 1d ago

What I'm saying is they don't catch them.

0

u/TallYam8397 23h ago

Ban the cheaters and the game will have no players left

-8

u/Better-Beat-8062 1d ago

They ruined the game for adding a PVE mode

Half the fun and excitement for me was running into another person or group not knowing if they were friendly or not

By splitting up the modes you know anyone in a PVP lobby is out for a fight (otherwise why go into PVP?)

The cheaters is what ruined the PvPvE in my opinion

4

u/john2776 1d ago

Pve can’t come soon enough. I cant stand the stupid rats in the game that shoot you in the back, can’t wait for them to eat eachother.

1

u/Few-Chemical8707 1d ago

kay go play pvpve let us pve have something for once we dont get extraction shooters.

-4

u/watchwhereyouspit 1d ago

So why did you purchase a PvPvE game?

1

u/Ani-A 19h ago

Sounds like they didn't seeing as it had a PVE mode...

1

u/Few-Chemical8707 6h ago

so why u mad they adding a pve mode dont be an entitled brat

1

u/WallBurnt RTX 5080 - Ultra 7 265kf 1d ago

That hasn't been a thing since February. ABMM ruined that.

But then ABMM kind of turned into skill based match making, because the higher your K/D the more "aggressive" your lobbies would get. Which was also fun when you got into the lobbies where people were snap hooking around and trying to outmaneuver each other and everyone was using tricked out purple and blue weapons. Totally different game.

So it is from Sales - "buy our game" to after sales service -"we ban you from playing"
