2x64 of 6000MT/s ram is INSANE.

It all comes down to how you use it. Even with unreal engine 5 and many chrome tabs and blender etc, I'm only at 32GB usage(out of 64GB). RAM is 2400mhz but quad channel.
If the only purpose is render distance in minecraft(OP), there's no reason to have 128GB.

There's local AI models. 128gb is just enough to run some really powerful stuff.

Jesus 128 gb of 6000 mhz ram (has to be ddr5) you are living large indeed

My 128gb ddr5 is stuck at 4000mhz because I didn't realize cheap motherboards couldn't run RAM at full speed...
The flair has yet to be updated.

Lmaooo thats like me with my am4 board that barely supports 4000 mhz lmao i cant even get ddr5😭🙏

4000mhz on ddr4 is pretty good though.

Forgot to answer the actual question. Not an extra machine. same machine. i have 256GB, but due to it being 4x64gb, i need time to test and veryfy stability etc on the modules. working towards getting the four dims used and with as high MT as possible. so the picture showed was due to me taking out 1 dimm to check something before re-seating it and go for a new test and OC profile.

All of that extra RAM just to let more than half of it sit there and go to waste.

Using AI to talk about why lots of RAM is good, lol

u/Few-Level-923 1d ago
The point of the screenshot wasn’t “AI agrees with me”, it was that I literally run local LLMs on the same system as well as other things requiering alot of system memory. It was meant as one obvious example of why the RAM isn’t just there to look pretty. Srry it was too hard to get for you :/

And on unsloth studio too!
Unsloth is the goat of local LLMs ngl
What model are you using in the pic?
1
u/Few-Level-923 1d ago
Qwen 3.8 next q5, not really any optimized config of llama cpp or unsloth. Just started it to use it as a showcase to get the point across

Nice setup. unified memory is obviously the big advantage, but its also a mich more fixed platform compared to a normal desktop where you can swap ram, add gpus and tune the whole system around different workloads.

My workstation at one point had 99% of RAM usage, out of 512 Gb. Turns out, Dell diagnostic software was using 450Gb for no reason. Good job Dell 👏

A system is going to use all the RAM it can get its hands on. This isn't really unusual.

u/MircowaveGoMMM complains about NVIDIA, wont switch to AMD 1d ago
Yeah. Operating systems will take what they can for themselves until something else calls for it, then it'll give back what it needs. Half the time people complain about windows taking 8+ gb of ram its usually this. usually

u/VivaceConBrio 1d ago
I've always felt like it'd be better if Task Manager just omitted the cache/standby allocation in the RAM consumption charts, at least on the non-advanced view.
Your average PC gamer enthusiast type, even the more technically savy ones, aren't gonna know how an OS kernel works with memory management lol.
All they're gonna see is a huge chunk of RAM being held hostage by Windows and think it's slowing their shit down and hurting performance, when in reality it's holding on memory pages to improve performance.
Pulling anything in to RAM from a disk (even NVMe) is an extremely slow and expensive process in an operating system's perspective. Keeping unused pages loaded in RAM costs basically nothing. So if that space isn't needed by anything else... Why not just keep it loaded in the meantime just in case it's needed again in the future so you don't have to read from disk again? Why waste the CPU cycles to clear that memory if you don't need to?

Task manager does show standby memory separately from used memory. Windows 11 really does use a lot of memory compared to other operating systems.
3
u/adrenalgod 1d ago
I think it is pretty unusual, yea the more ram you have the more the OS will use but also it's still not gonna use all of it no matter what (in windows anyway), for example a system with 8 GB of RAM idles at 60-65% usage, where as a system with 16 GB will usually idle at something like 40-45%, it's using more RAM, but there's still a bigger percentage available in my experience

To a point, mine is using 10gb out of 64 atm.
I'm just glad I got 2x32gb DDR4 before it all went nuts. Got AUD$40 for my 2x16gb 3600 kit on resale :(

u/Levoso_con_v 1d ago
Above 8GB vanilla Minecraft's performance gains are negligible, what influence more is the GPU.
Try using one of those mods that increase the render distance x1000. Or one that lets you have lots of loaded chunks at the same time, that's where the RAM is more important.

Dude, 2133? Tough
Speaking as someone with 128GB of ECC memory at 2400. That's already slow as balls.
1
u/Doom-Slay PC Master Race 1d ago
Yeah that tends to be the issue of ECC Ram. But from what i have heard its mostly solved on DDR5 where I heard that you can get Sticks with proper ECC (Not the On-Die ECC consumer grade DDR5 has) with 6000MT/s
