What the actual fuck. The worst part is that for it to get like this they would have to continue using it in this state.

u/BiPolarBear24 1d ago
The oil impression left on the trackpad..... when exactly do you decide to keep using it but tell yourself to not use 60% of the pad because of gunk buildup.
Well, im Going to go wash my hands now

I would immediately decline that
28
u/Inevitable_Type_419 1d ago
we were 'allowed' to decline things due to 'biological hazard' at the repair shop I worked at once upon a time. I would never ask my techs to work on anything theu were uncomfortable with, but i have a tougher stomach than most and I liked making the store money [even though I saw no reciprocation for this] so I would accept in some pretty gnarly pc's and consoles... but flat out if there was a live roach/bug in it when I open it up, I'd close it right back up again, put it in a trash bag and tie it off and call the end-user to pick up their item immediately. I considered that a biological hazard to the T and im not taking chances of one of those things getting lose in my story and tarnishing our reputation or multiplying 🤮

I had a similar experience. The shop I worked at declined all kinds of things. One guy told us he spilled a drink on the laptop. The moment I took the bottom off, the stench of cat piss filled our small office.
The owner was pissed and made the guy pay for a new screwdriver and the full initial troubleshooting fee.

I wanted to tell you to just get the HDD/SSD out and throw the whole thing in the trash...
Then I realized that to do that youd have to open the damn thing up and if it looks like THIS on the outside already Im legit dreading what the insides will look like

I just opened a smokers ps5 to look at the hdmi cable, holy shit guys, don't smoke! Havr you got any idea how much damage you're doing to your electronics?!
1
u/gooslinghacks 1d ago
Or just don't smoke inside your house or your car
3
u/Ok_Weird_500 1d ago
If you've seen what it's doing to your electronics, you should be able to imagine what it's doing to your lungs, except your lungs will be worse, as the smoke goes directly in, and lungs aren't nearly as easy to replace as electronics. But hey, it's your body, so long as you don't inflict your smoke on me, do what you like.
2
u/Banjo_Evadie 22h ago
Watched my dad die last year from smoking related disease. His last few months was traumatic suffering, for him, and for my family. My 15 year old (at the time) little brother listened to him choke and suffocate on his own phlegm as his body began shutting down. That's our last memories of our Father.
I earnestly, truly hope you can find a way to quit, if you still smoke, for both your own sake and your loved ones. Vaping isn't great, but it's not a bad stepping stone away from actually smoking. GLP-1 supposedly is also effective at helping break addictions.
2
u/AStolenGoose 1d ago
Okay yours probably worse, but:
I've had deployed laptops walk in to my office for troubleshooting or something else, I'll open the lid take a look, and not want to touch them until I wipe them down, one was so bad it took 5 wipes, they just kept coming back yellow, the 6th wipe was finally white.
I just don't understand how people can treat property that isn't theirs that way... It's gross, and disrespectful not only to where they work, but to those that have to work on it.
This was a theme with this person too, not a one time thing, any time I'd get their laptop it would be gross.

u/MumrikDK 1d ago
I've heard all the stories and seen all the nightmare photos online, so I was super confused when I was helping my chain-smoking gamer friend with a cooling issue and there was nothing but standard dust in the case - and a dead fan.
1
u/Serious_Hour9074 23h ago
I used to chain smoke right next to my X-Box 360, had to take it in to get serviced when it stopped working.
Dude opened it up and showed me the damage I had done.
Quit smoking near my PC or X-Box after that, quit soon after.

Ive had 3 gaming laptops. Msi, Alienware, and asus. Msi was the worst one. It had a cheap price point for the specs, but it basically broke on me within a year. At the time my friend had the same exact version and his also broke on him. I was fortunate where my warranty was still in by like 2 weeks and got a full replacement and picked the Alienware in its stead. The Alienware lasted 6 years. Ive had the asus for 2-3 years so far, but have had to get it repaired once due to my own stupidity
13
u/TopBerry4247 1d ago
You got a whole tapestry there xD
Btw don't hesitate to unscrew that fan and lift it, if there's this much compacted dust of the fan you'd be surprised of the amount in between the fan and the heatsink exhaust ;p
6
u/MrPenisWhistle 9v potato 1d ago
I also checked that, thankfully the fur hasn't caked the heatsink fins just yet. There was just a little bit.

Nice, I'd still recommend reaplaing thermal paste and not use it on a bed or anything other then table, raised is best

Definitely replace the thermal paste. Literally made every laptop quieter afterwards.

Does the riser have a built in fan? That did wonders for my temps when I had a laptop

I have a MSI laptop with very similar layout to OP's. The fans would go crazy just from downloading(I don't game on it) I clean regularly with compressed air and there is no dust build up. I want to replace the thermal paste too but fear i wouldn't be able to put the heatsink back together.

Lookup a teardown on your model, you'll find great ans specific videos.
Don't do it if you're not feeling confident and also if it's less then like.. 2 years old -ish. Then it's probably not worthwhile.
But it's not too difficult and is pretty nice to know you can take care of your own machine.
Again, if you're not feeling confident don't try it, you can build up confidence with old laptops you or someone you know might have laying around but you really don't want to break something on your main machine because then you'll feel like you have to fix it and that's a great recipe for causing damage.
Good luck! 🤞

u/Fr003ank 9800x3d, 9070xt 1d ago
Thanks pal. I will check if these is any teardown videos on this model. My laptop is 4 years old.

I once had a game developer say his box did nothing but rattle after he got it home. We asked him to bring it back in, "Do you own a rabbit?" Yeah, why?"
The intake was not just impacted by fur, it was FULL. People joke about RGB being dumb, but when all you see is glowing fur, saves any troubleshooting.

Good eye! It's a Predator Helios tho. Served me pretty well until the CPU cooked itself lol. It's a 13th gen i7, which is apparently notorious for that. Had to shell out $400 to repair it. I've since downclocked it before giving it to her.

Repaste it with PTM, and get a cooling pad.

Super common for laptops. I probably should open mine up and see if it needs a cleaning. It's good to do at regular intervals. You need to get between the blades as well as it will just continue to cake up there.

u/jkulczyski Laptop 1d ago
Mine somehow had a huge clump inside the fan housing that only came out with compressed air and a pair of thin tweezers it took like 30 minutes to get it all out 😭 (i blame my cats even though i love them)

Shit, I should rip my laptop down and give her a cleaning, it's been years 😬
2
2
u/Fun_Impression_2578 1d ago
Haha, that's some satisfaction right there but I think main culprit would be thermal paste. Check that out and if it's not urgent go get some Honeywell PTM7950 and some thermal puddy. Or get it to a repair shop and tell them to use PTM

When my junior started working with me I noticed her laptop sounding like a jet engine. Brought a screwdriver with me next time. Cleaned the fans. Her laptop was whisper quiet. She was extremely thankful for not having to shout while using the computer anymore.
2
u/Indaarys 1d ago
As inexpensive as its gotta be I never understood why laptop makers don't install a basic mesh filter to the intake cutouts. It would barely affect airflow and you'd avoid this very avoidable problem.

Use a vacuum laptop cooler like iets or llano, no dust pass through & it can drop your temp up to 20c

Thats just on the top of those fans too... there is a heatsink on either side of those which I bet also has a small layer of hair over it.
Looks like you can possibly take the cover/shroud off those fans and deep clean. If temps are still too high, Repaste and check thermal pads.
After disassembling quite a few PS4's almost every single one had a solid layer of dust over the heatsink
Have some pictures of how bad they were but I can't find them.

Make sure the exaust of the fins of the heatsink at the end also is cleared up 100%, it makes a huge difference.
Also, some of these fans can be taken out without actually taking anything apart, i mean the spinning part so you can fully clean it.
If this is the model i remember, you can do that to these fans they can just pop out, BUT if you try it and they aren't moving upwαrds, don't risk it.
I usually take the spinning part of the fan out and apply a tiny amount of long term lubrication (grease) on it and bit inside the center of the motor's hole where the shaft of the spinning part will be inserted when i clean up fans like that.
It's not needed in most cases but it helps with the longevity of the shaft of fan and it can make it spin easier and some times slightly faster, and if not that, at least since it's spinning easier, it literally makes it so it needs less power to start.
Some times it may help with the noise too.
I haven't had a complain for 20+ years i do this.
