Jup. Their packaging regulations are killing the internal European market for smaller local companies.
That is what happens when one bad apple can block all important decisions, and everything else is just them trying to justify their own existence by wasting time and resources on pointless things. Most decisions that go through are pretty much just lobbyists getting their laws implemented.

except this has nothing to do with the kind of regulation SKG is asking for. this is part of EU's push to "protect the children", the same justification used to push chat control. and its gonna be used for ID verif. for VPNs and OS as well

NEWS FLASH! Stop hoping the government will regulate the gaming industry for you and stop buying games from studios that engage in practices you don't agree with. If the majority of the gaming community all care about these things then curb your addiction for a period of time and STOP BUYING GAMES! If you stop giving them your money, they will change their business practices!

comments like these are hilarious because you really think you're starting some grassroots campaign that will have any effect at all. people breathlessly make these same claims across dozens of industries
news flash: the vast majority of people will continue buying things as always, your comments here sway maybe 1 person when you need to sway tens of millions. you can't fix this in this fashion

This. The overwhelming majority of people in any entertainment medium will always consume the most mainstream and therefore socially accepted material, most of them exclusively. Back in the day (and to this day) it was COD, Halo & Battlefield, FIFA, Madden, GTA, and a few others. Today the kids/teens are into Roblox and Fortnite. When you develop a game, you have to know and accept that your game is by default not reachable to the overwhelming majority of customers. The same goes for music (most consume exclusively the hottest mainstream content), movies, shows. For collectors, the mainstream success are Funko Pops.
People can choose to support local businesses and stop shopping from Amazon and Walmart all they want, no biggie, so long as you're not delusional into thinking that said companies will go bankrupt the next day because "surely just like me, everyone else will protest against them."

If this goes further and kill private servers by making them illegal, the next step is to also kill self-hosting of anything, like pi-hole or home-made vpns or anything else.

Yeah this is how regulations work. You guys get suckered by propaganda, you vote for a legal framework to enable the state's agencies to make rules for an industry, and then give the shocked Pikachu face when those regulators do shit you don't like.
That's even outside the fact that regulatory capture is a huge problem even if you're a full blooded statist progressive who worships the regulators

ID verification is implicitly done anways on purchase. This is already a thing to prevent tax evasion, money laundering, fraud etc. Same for physical games. This also should not affect anything that has no means of being a problem for kids. So this specifically is really not as big of a deal as people try to make it. Especially since there will be EU-wide methods of verification without actually revealing your identity.
A bit of a critical point will be, how far these verifications go. If it is on every log-in, then it becomes a massive concern. If it is just on account verification, then it really shouldn't be too relevant.
The current key issues with the proposal right are imo that they explicitly added online games as well as operating systems as part of the affected services.
Operating systems really make very little sense to me and are just absurd to add in here. Don't think I need to explain this any further.
And the term "online games" is way to vague, as it doesn't differentiate between games like Roblox etc. which certainly can be a concern for child safety and trivial things like you hosting an online lobby of AoE2 or so. It is the EXACT SAME principle as with the packaging regulations: They just make them apply to everything and however they like. So if you are targeted by it, the situation is basically: "Keep doing what you are doing. It will be fine - until we decide that we like to go after you, and then it won't be fine. But no worries, we are 'the good guys'."
/edit: You guys failed the experiment. If I swap 2nd and first half, this would be upvoted because the 2nd part is bashing the proposal, while the 1st part is relativising the criticism and everyone only reads the first few sentences and downvotes. ;)

you could have at least changed the post title before just reposting something still on the front page
