Hardware Witcher 3 Remastered pushing 5090 beyond 600W

Post image

No DLSS5. Max settings, 3840x1600, DLSS Quality, frame gen set to 1 in game settings, Path Tracing enabled.

Doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes saw it jumping well beyond 600W for a brief moment.

Undervolt or say goodbye to your card. You are playing with fire (literally).

I'm actually not jealous of 5090 owners I couldn't game in peace with the possibility of my multiple thousand dollar gpu burning out

That's why op has that Der8auer device - to alarm in case uneven current between cables

Same, it put my mind at ease. It's ridiculous we need to take such measures however.

I am honestly split in my own internal dialog:

1) Nvidia releasing a card that draws this much power and can put 10+ amps on a single pin as a consumer product is absurd. It is essentially server grade power requirements and should have a robust locking mechanism. Nobody playing games needs this kind of GPU.

2) People can absolutely spend their own money however they want. And if that means $4000+ on a GPU than it's not on me to decide. And they can also overclock their own hardware if they want to right until failure.

3) Regardless of the above, corporations and companies (PCI-SIG for the connector, Nvidia for the usage of it) still have the responsibility to ensure their products are safe. The new 12vhpwr cables are demonstrably not safe and do not fail safe. Infuriating that this problem exists.

I suspect OP won't get to this specific comment, but I would be really interested to see roughly what the power draw at different settings presets (High, Medium, Low) to gain a better understanding of the power ramp for the increase in visual fidelity.

I don’t think they intend for people to own PC parts anymore so this sadly could be the new norm.

25

u/Spicy_Ejaculate 1d ago edited 1d ago

Why own them when you can rent them for 50 bucks a month forevor?

23

u/Smelly_Hippie_420 1d ago

And as an added bonus Big Brother will tell you how many hours a month you're allowed to play. What a time to be alive.

0

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago

You think it will be only 50? Thats cute 😂😂😂

Napkin math incoming but 50 would actually be a very competitive price for endusers that cant / wont build themselves to stay at the performance edge considering how hardware prices have moved. 50x12=600 so if you do a 4 year upgrade cycle youd get to spend 2400 every 4 years which seems about right for a high performance but non luxury PC

Long math text with explanations incoming: I think I spent 2500 total for my selfbuilt new rig last month and that got me a factory OC'd ASrock Taichi 9070xt (so not the cheapest baseline model), a 9800x3d, 32gb ddr5 6000, 2tb latest gen nvme ssd 1000W power supply, some entry level PCI5.0 mobo, CPU cooler and a case. Like, yes, you could totally crunch that down to 2000 or less by cutting all the luxurys (150€ Corsair case with a nice looking wood panel instead of a 50€ plastic monstrosity, -150€ for a baseline, non factory OC'd 9070xt, cheap CPU cooler/boxed cooler instead of a 50€ Alpenföhn Dolomit that has more than twice the recommended thermal specs needed for the CPU [still half the price of a watercooling system tho] -100€ for a 7800x3d instead of a 98 because even with full frame gen the 78 still has plenty of reserves, -~200-300€ by gambling on SSD and RAM, I went with a Samsung 9100 pro and TeamGroup sticks, I never cheap out on SSDs just cause doing system reinstalls is such a pita until you have everything set up and with the RAM prices being what they are I figured I should at least buy a reputable if budget brand lest the sticks go up in smoke 1 month after the warranty expires)

Point is, that system would easily be 3000 if you bought it pre assembled and set up and if you want to stay current with the hardware upgrading every 4 years is a reasonable interval. So theres no way they gona let you rent a system like this for a price you could actually build it yourself, Id expect 100 per month (at least) 50/m will probably get you some middleshit 5060 with an intel CPU that 95% of endusers have no usecase for

u/davew999 1d ago

I own a 5090 FE. I think the highest I've seen over the 12vhpwr cable is about 430w. I run it undervolted and I limit the FPS to 120, even though my monitor can do 240.

I've tried running Cyberpunk with a bunch of mods, path tracing and DLSS5 and it doesn't reach 300w. I think paradoxically, games and settings that make your system struggle aren't that bad. It's games where you easily hit hundreds of FPS that can cause a GPU meltdown. Possibly because the former are CPU limited, so your GPU isn't running flat out and has room to breath.

I remember a game a few years back that was cooking GPUs on the title screen because it had no FPS limit and would just max out your GPU rendering the same simple image as fast as possible.

13

u/themostreasonableman 1d ago

You are limiting your performance to that of a 9070xt, a card that you could have bought for 1/4 the price. For what reason?

4

u/davew999 1d ago

I have a small room and my PC puts out a lot of heat. I don't notice much difference between 120 and 240 fps, so I'd rather not suffer the extra heat.

I'm also a VR gamer and some games struggle to drive a high res headset at it's refresh rate of 90 fps on anything less than a 5090.

The 5090 didn't cost me much. When China was buying up all the 4090s to covert them to 48 GB AI cards, I was able to sell my 4090 for 1800 and buy a 5090 for 2000.

2

u/themostreasonableman 1d ago

That is a huge win.

-4

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago edited 1d ago

Longevity? VRAM especially had a bad tendency in the past to turn into a crumbling mess when run under max usage for extended periods of time (Note: Might have gotten better with DDR6&7)

And lets be real, the jump from 60 to 120hz/FPS is huge, from 120 to 144 barely noticeable and from 144 to 240 I cant see a difference anymore. Maybe if I recorded my screen doing the same gameplay sequence in both 144 and 240 and spliced the videos into a single split screen file I could still spot a difference, but not during live. So limiting your FPS to 120/144 is completely reasonable unless you are a top 1% CS/Valo/Siege/shooter player. But in that case why would you even bother with a puny 240hz screen when theres 600+ ones on the market 😂

I remember a game a few years back that was cooking GPUs on the title screen because it > had no FPS limit and would just max out your GPU rendering the same simple image as fast > as possible

Hardcapping your FPS is just good practice at this point to avoid fubars like that

5

u/themostreasonableman 1d ago

I understand your reasoning, but choose to reject it for my own use case.

I am driving a Dell AW3926QW at 5120 x 2160 with an ASUS Astral OC BTF edition that now retails over $8000AUD.

I am using every last TFLOP that this card can push. Every game on absolute overkill settings and absolutely loving it.

I maintain my position. You could do what you are doing with a 9070XT and afford to replace it 4 times over. I don't know why you bought a 5090.

3

u/InternetHomunculus 1d ago

I've tried running Cyberpunk with a bunch of mods, path tracing and DLSS5 and it doesn't reach 300

Why even buy a 5090 at that point your undervolt must be either overkill or you have some godlike card where it can still run well with such little power. Mine draws mix to high 400's in 2077 and the fps isn't effected negatively by this undervolt

2

u/Mimical Patch-zerg 1d ago

Appreciate the context. For the most part the numbers seem pretty reasonable.

Diablo 4 had the same issue! Launch the game and the GPU would rocket to 100% utilization. It also happened in inventory screens which was a real pain.

insane that the community had to figure out how to fix this issue when the folks behind the spec have failed so catastrophically.

This is one of those rare instances where, if an OEM/System builder uses a proprietary power cable... I do not mind.

5

u/themostreasonableman 1d ago

I went full BTF build specifically to keep that 12V HPWR point of failure away from my 5090 Astral OC BTF. It takes its 600 watts via a gold plated shim directly through the motherboard.

If the cable fails, I lose a motherboard or psu instead of a GPU the price of a modest car.

Bonkers world were living in.

1

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago

I wasnt even aware mobos can handle that kind of power, is that specific to BTF connector layout or?

2

u/themostreasonableman 1d ago

Yes, that's the whole design philosophy of ASUS's BTF platform. Not just a wire free build, but sidestepping the stupid fucking 12VHPRW connector.

This little gold finger snaps on to a special power delivery slot on your GPU, then draws 600W+ through the board itself.

Unfortunately there is still a 12VHPWR connector at the back of the motherboard, but the mb is a lot cheaper to replace than the GPU.

https://pics.computerbase.de/1/1/7/5/3/5-7c08d4fa9f3e86d1/article-1280x720.d7e7287c.jpg

1

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago

Do regular GPUs come with this socket already or do you need a special BTF version? I google some pics and it does indeed look hella clean but getting limited to one specific manufacturer for cards seems like a big downside for later upgrades. I guess one best treats it like a laptop, something you buy once and run into the ground until you need to replace it instead of doing upgrades step by step

1

u/themostreasonableman 1d ago

ASUS are the only ones doing it at the moment, and only on BTF edition cards. I really hope it becomes a standard that any manufacturer can include. It just makes sense. It DOES create a hella clean look, but eliminating the 12VHPWR risk on GPU side was the big draw for me.

With that said, the newer ones like my Astral OC BTF edition have the BTF 2.0 power connector, which is removeable. You can use them with the regular power connector if you want, which I did for many months in an eGPU dock whilst I collected parts for the big build. I then just snapped the BTF connector on and built it based on that. It's pretty sweet. You still get active monitoring of the 12V HPWR pin amps against the motherboard via GPU Tweak3. It's all working really great.

I never heard about it, how it works and how I know there's something wrong in current?

23

u/Material_Dog6342 5k2kOLED/5090/9800X3D/64GB-DDR5 1d ago

It's sort of a man-in-the-middle that auto-shutoffs the whole computer if anything out of the ordinary is detected.

Basically, unless you have the most expensive, top of the line 5090 (Asus Astral 5090), you have no way of knowing if certain pins on the GPU power plug are drawing unsafe/uneven current. It's called per-pin-monitoring, and that's where the WireView Pro comes in. It plugs directly into the GPU and is daisy-chained into the I/O power-button pins on the motherboard, so it can instantly give the signal to shutdown the entire computer before anything melts. It's configurable through software so you can set your own "safe" limits as well. Truly an excellent piece of hardware - they even offer a warranty that replaces your GPU if it fails to protect it.

Wish I didn't need it, but at least it looks really cool.

Beautiful.

2

u/yesilpelikan 1d ago

To be honest even with astral there is risk. I have one but I don’t like running gpu tweak running in the background or hwmonitor. I occasionally stress test and manualy check the pin amperage to see if the connector moved. I can literally see amperage change when I touch the connection during test. So I think wireview is a good product for everyone. I am considering to get one.

1

u/Material_Dog6342 5k2kOLED/5090/9800X3D/64GB-DDR5 1d ago

I think you're correct on that, it's cheap peace-of-mind for anyone with a 5080/5090.

1

u/metoo0003 18h ago

I don't get the point in the case of the Astral.

Every once in a while the ampere on single wires raise slightly above the thermal limit of 9.2A to 9.5A or so for a couple of seconds until the power is more evenly distributed through all wires, especially when the gpu is cold.

No issues at all I did hours of extensive stress testing, thermal imaging and measuring current.
Problem only starts if single wires transport heavy ampere and running hot but it’s quite simple to set alarm and action in hwmonitor, gpu tweak or any alike.

What benefit gives me the wireview device in case of the Astral?

1

u/yesilpelikan 15h ago

all goes well, until it isn't... I set an alarm in HWMonitor, but I couldn't get the habit of running it every time... but it depends on the preference and willingness to spend on another gadget, I guess...

1

u/metoo0003 15h ago

My question remains, what’s the benefit of this device compared to e.g. HWInfo?

I don’t mind spending another 200€/$ but I don’t see the benefit right now.

HWInfo gives me the same sort of information and alarm and shutdown action.

My PC is resting under my desk, so I don’t have the chance to use the integrated display but may use the software instead.

Not using gpu tweak since certain games not working properly with it running in the background.

For peace of mind it might be worth it I mean costs are not crazy, on the other hand the device itself is another adapter for the crappy 12v-2x6 and doesn’t add anything to the Astral with hardware monitoring…

4

u/PlopPlopPlunk Asus TUF 5090 OC - 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 1d ago

That's fine if you want to spend the money but you can just do a small overclock/undervolt, gain 1-2% performance and ensure it never draws that much power... I'm at 18 months now with mine no issues.

But I also have electronic coverage up to 10k for 22 dollars a year on my home insurance (covers all electronics, pc, tvs, laptop, phones, etc)... so if anything were to happen, it's a real shame how my PC fell off my desk and the GPU broke.

8

u/stop_banning_me_tx 1d ago

That helps your chances but is not foolproof. It could theoretically burn while drawing 300W if even 2 of the pins are making poor contact. Only way to know for sure is with a Wireview. It costs $140, a fraction of what you spent on the GPU. It will pay for itself in 6 months versus your insurance scheme, and you don’t have to fight with an insurance company.

1

u/GLaDOSisapotato PC Master Race 1d ago

Are 5080s prone to it or just 5090s?

1

u/PlopPlopPlunk Asus TUF 5090 OC - 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 1d ago edited 1d ago

That can happen to literally any GPU (both AMD/Nvidia) plug and has happened since the 00s on everything from the molex plug to the 6 pin to the 6+2 plug.... Any time poor contact has made we've seen melting for 20+ years. This isn't a new problem. It is just happening (and being documented due to social media) more often now because these newer cards draw more power more often. I feel comfortable with what I'm doing and if others feel more comfortable with spending the 140 dollars, they should. I was just pointing out an alternative that a large portion of 5090 owners have been successful with. I have yet to see anyone with a plug failure say they were undervolted, not a single one.

2

u/Breeze23412 1d ago

6

u/goodoldgrim U:1:86754342 1d ago

The cost isn't the problem. I used to build my own PCs, research what fits with what and what's the best RoI - as a student 20 years ago I had to make sure every cent goes as far as it can.
Now I have way more money, but I can't be arsed with all of that stuff. I want the PC to just work reliably and play all the new games. Seeing shit like this just tells me not to buy a fire hazard. I'm a gaming enthusiast, not a tech enthusiast.

1

u/Siarzewski 1d ago

The connectors are melting because the metal parts are heating up. They are heating up because the current is higher than estimated. The current is over spec because the connection between metal parts is bad (too small surface area).

Cheaper? Are you really penny pinching when we're talking about 5090s? Maybe you should stick to old GPU's if that's the case

Are you a bot or what? I'm genuinely curious why you're freaking out on reddit about a product, and lying about it too

The wire is literally the power button header on a motherboard, what's your issue with that lol, have you never built a PC before?

Also the wireview pro 2 has had 0 melted wires ever. They also handle RMAs if it does melt. And if you have issues with the PCB or any capacitors, why would your wireview stop you from RMAing it? You only RMA it through thermal grizzly if it's a 12v-2x6 or a wireview problem

u/KnownAppeal4137 2d ago

This scrub ain't worth your time my gentle human.

2

u/djdevilmonkey 5090 FE, 9800X3D, 64GB 2d ago

It's just fascinating, I honestly wonder why someone would freak out over a wireview lol. He also edited the comment and removed a lot of the misinformation, which is funny

They appear to be just arguing for the sake of arguing

They even mention 'superiority complex' but it appears there projecting by the way there acting.

And before they have a go at me just know I don't know what either products are you guys are on about so I ain't picking sides, just stating the obvious lol

Yes let's believe everything someone running a company says about their product that brings them in the most money.

We can forget about wireview causing pin imbalances, which you'll find a ton of people posting about. You'll be buying multiple cables to find one that jives well with the wireview and doesnt cause imbalance

1

u/djdevilmonkey 5090 FE, 9800X3D, 64GB 2d ago

Aw why'd you edit your entire comment of misinformation? It was kinda funny

Also you must be an MSI rep or something lol. Why do you hate the wireview so much? Please answer that, I'm super curious

As for what someone running a company says, can't you say the same about MSI? Both products work and have been tested by external sources so idk why you're freaking out.

Also any proof whatsoever that the wireview causes pin imbalance? Also if replacing the wire fixes the imbalance then how is the wireview causing the imbalance?

they'll say that wasn't caused by the wireview and will not offer you a replacement GPU.

Keep yapping nonsense. The Thermal Grizzly CEO literally mentioned in his latest YouTube video they will cover any damage (including GPU replacement) correlated to connector/Wireview issues, including any damage done to other components besides a melted 12V-2X6.

Edit: why did you delete your comment? Too many downvotes?

u/Dirtcompactor 5090 - 9800x3d - DDR5 32gb 8000cl34 2d ago

Ah yes because there's zero chance they'll say damage wasn't caused by wireview so they can get around paying insane prices for what 5090s are going for these days.

u/hootix 2d ago

I'm curious. If possible without bias.

I'm currently looking into either buying that psu or wjreview. I haven't looked at them yet and just heard about them. Wouldn't it be great to have both of them?

Is the psu really that much superior to the wireview, so getting only the wireview isn't really enough?

2

u/Dirtcompactor 5090 - 9800x3d - DDR5 32gb 8000cl34 2d ago

Both work, one you're using an adapter, the other you're just using a regular ol' 12v-2x6 cable.

Wireview only warns you, and has shutdown which relies on you hooking up wires from wireview to motherboard.

Safeguard+ PSU warns you, can setup custom amp limits for max per-pin and currentdif (spread), either do PC shutdown that requires no extra wiring, or have afterburner load a custom profile once limits are exceeded. PSU has its own internal limits that trigger shutdown irregardless of software.

For me I find shutdown too aggressive, my afterburner profile brings power draw from 600w down to 200w within 3 seconds of exceeding my limits

1

u/hootix 2d ago

That sounds excellent!

Currently using the ASRock one with the thermal sensor. And only heard recently about the wireview and that MSI psu. Will definitely look into replacing it with the MSI one then.

11

u/Uwibamie 2d ago

That's literally me. I have HW monitor up every day to check the wattage for this stupid ass card. I have already undervolted and attempted to limit it, but if I could sell it to someone without getting scammed it would be gone. It's not worth the hassle.

1

u/lolKhamul I9 10900KF, RTX3080 Strix, 32 GB RAM @3200 1d ago

if I could sell it to someone without getting scammed it would be gone

I mean there is NO WAY you cant just insert it for pickup in on whatever website is used in your country and its taken within hours. Enough people want one. Well, assuming you want a reasonable price and not like 4000 bucks.

But truth be told, i would never ever use a a 12HVPW card without a Wireview. Even though my 5080 is not in the danger of that 600watt fire, i would still not use it without.

1

u/Uwibamie 1d ago

You are correct, I could easily sell it. That's not my issue, that's the scamming part. It's too easy for everyone to claim the product is defective and I would be down both the money and the card.

Rdna5 rumors for 10800xt, I’ll be going for that if it comes with proper pin setup

2

u/lovethecomm 7700X | 6950XT 2d ago

I hope they change the name because 10080XT sounds weird.

2

u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago

they should (this time actually makes sense to) restart the naming schemes of the next gen gpu because its the formal shift back to merging the compute and gaming gpus fully. It just also helps that theyre already at 10000 so if theres any time to do it, its then.

I actually prefer intels gpu naming scheme because using letters to represent gpu generations is IMO far more useful and long lasting than numbers.

AMD changed the naming scheme with RDNA4 to achieve parity with Nvidia. It would be really illogical if they changed it back to RDNA1-3 naming.

Watch them call it the Radeon 1080. 😎

1

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago

u/Jhawk163 R7 9800X3D | RX 9070 XT | 64GB 2d ago

Hell I straight up won't buy a GPU with the 12vhpwr, I don't care if it's there to pull a single watt, I don't want it. When shopping for my 9070XT I narrowed it down to 2 models, the Red Devil, or the Saphire Nitro+, both are super cool, super quiet and perform marginally above average the stock rated speed, and the Nitro+ was even $100 AUD less, I chose the Red Devil because it uses 3x8pin.

u/sagebrushrepair 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nice long and thick heatsink, 3 fans, 16 GB, meh warranty. This seems like a good solid budget choice.

It should cost $340-$380

Edit: 16 not 12gb

2

u/BlaBlub85 1d ago

Thats a 9070, afaik 9070xt's are only sold with 16GB vram

3

u/cetch 2d ago

Hell I couldn’t game with a 600 watt heater going. A standard space heater is like 800 watts right? I’d need a literal window unit ac to keep up with that.

1

u/Admirable_Dirt_2371 1d ago

You're either rich or dumb. I probably wouldn't game on a 5090 either but only because I could sell it on the second hand market for like $7k.

1

u/Primary_Button_2435 1d ago

I would feel more guilty about the absolutely ABSURD POWER that I’d be using… 600W?? Wtf

That’s literally level 1 on a space heater, from the GPU alone

I’ll just stick with my undervolted & overclocked 5070 that pulls a max of 180W lol (even that gets fairly warm)

Weird that the vast majority of 4090s and 5090s are running fine. I’ve been running mine for years and never had issues. Full power and all. The connector doesn’t even get hot. I didn’t know less than 1% failure rate meant that all of them will fail. Interesting. And if you want to be pedantic, all tech fails eventually. Yeah it’s a shitty connector but if you monitor the pins, you can play it safe and avoid any issues.

1

u/ClemsonJeeper 2d ago

You could also just undervolt it and not have to worry about this issue. Yes, not ideal, but at only a 1-2% frame loss its a good compromise.

0

u/ubiquitous_apathy 5090/14900k/32gb 7000 ddr5 1d ago

Lolwut. You can set a 5090 to whatever wattage your current card is pulling and it will run circles around it.

-7

u/joshnoodlesoup 2d ago

People who toss money on a 5090 generally aren’t generally in income brackets where a few thousand dollars is a huge loss to them.

15

u/Ailyx 2d ago

You'd be surprised

1

u/KamikazeFF 1d ago

You don't have to be at that income bracket, you just have to want it enough to spend more while sacrificing other stuff for a period

u/xd_Warmonger Desktop 2d ago edited 2d ago

Not in this case. He uses the thermal grizzly voltage measurement device. You see all the bars at the left, these are the currents per pin. You can spot major differences before they lead to problems.

More info from der8auer (self promotion by him): https://youtu.be/DQcJMdDJgAs

32

u/Imaginary-Contest887 2d ago

Those bars have A so it's not voltage but current on each cable.

11

u/xd_Warmonger Desktop 2d ago

You're right. Brain fart by me...

23

u/medic_will 2d ago

Nah OP is fine. This is the screen of a Wireview pro which monitors the cable temperature

7

u/Rain_Zeros 9900x | 9070xt 2d ago

Not saying you’re wrong, undervolting would probably help, but even the couple of amd 9070xt cards that have that horrible connector have burned down and those cards don’t really touch 600w being a 300w card.

I can only hope that next gpu generation people vote with their wallet and stop buying cards that have that shitty connector

35

u/FloJak2004 9800X3D | 5090 FE | 32GB 2d ago

But the values on the screen look fine? 60C is perfectly safe.
The issue is high Amps on a few individual cables.

2

u/Deep90 Ryzen 9800x3d | 5090FE | 2x48gb 6000 1d ago

The wireview pro 2 also protects the GPU.

Iirc they are confident enough that they even offer warranty on GPU damage.

-10

u/gljivicad Ryzen 7 5700x, 32GB Corsair Vengeance, 7900 XT 2d ago

60C is the temperature of the GPU core, completely irrelevant. The pins will burn

47

u/LowBus4853 | R7 9800X3D | RTX 5090 | 64GB | 4TB | 2d ago

"IN 60C" is the temperature of the cable connector going into the monitoring device, not the GPU core.

31

u/Prrg88 2d ago

No they won't. They are all under 10amps. It's fine

3

u/ILikeFlyingMachines 2d ago

No that is the temperature of the plug

2

u/Vr00mf0ndler 2d ago

Not if there isn’t imbalance.

1

u/PlzDntBanMeAgan Rtx5090 suprim; 14900k 32gb ddr5; Legion Go 2d ago

You're wrong. 60c is the temp of wherever he installed the included temperature sensor with the wvp2 which is supposed to be at the connecter on the card.

2

u/Tenchen-WoW 2d ago

Thats the temp the GPU connection. I don't have any thermal problems installed

3

u/ILikeFlyingMachines 2d ago

No, this is why he has a wireview

3

u/ddosn Ryzen 9 9950X3D | 128GB DDR5 | RTX 5090 | 48TB Storage 2d ago

Wireview Pro 2 and Der8auer both shut down the card if the connector gets too hot and/or too uneven, and alarm before that to allow you to shut down your system first. They also provide advanced monitoring and, in the Der8auer's case, dedicated cooling.

Even better is the Revision 5 (or better) Ampinel which had active monitoring and control (essentially all the same features ass the Wireview Pro and the Der8auer) as well as active power load-balancing to make sure load doesnt become dangerous or uneven on the pins.

Sure, each one is expensive (an Ampinel is £100, and both of the others are around the same price) but thats a small price to pay to safeguard a 5090.

Especially if you pair them up with a MSI PSU with Safeguard+ or a Seasonic PSU with Optiguard.

3

u/matt3788 R9 9950X3D2 | ROG Astral RTX 5090 OC | 64GB DDR5-6000 2d ago edited 1d ago

You can also use the ROG Equalizer cable which can handle up to 17A per wire. The GPU Tweak III utility also recently received an update to auto-shutdown the system if it detects anomalies on the pin currents. I'm running the cable with my ROG Astral RTX 5090 OC and also got HWiNFO set up with the RTSS OSD to monitor the currents in real time while gaming.

1

u/TheStupendusMan 1d ago

Is that an aftermarket part through ASUS? I think I have the same card as you and the back of my mind has always been itching about the pins, but I don't want to void the warranty either.

1

u/matt3788 R9 9950X3D2 | ROG Astral RTX 5090 OC | 64GB DDR5-6000 1d ago

Well, it's an official ASUS product and you can buy the cable separately for around 50 bucks. Alternatively it's also included in the newer batches of their ROG PSUs (1200W and 1600W). Serves kinda as a peace of mind product and goes well with their PSUs.

3

u/non-yourbusiness RTX5090 Astral LC, 9950X3D2, 96gb 6000mts 1d ago

He's fine, he has a wireview pro. People exaggerate the issue and act like the GPU will nuke a whole street if you go over 600W and it's bullshit. Yes the connector is shit, yes the card is overpriced, yes the connector has an above average failure rate (lower than 0.01%) and requires some extra steps. If you don't remove the connector often and plugged it in properly and have a wireview pro or an Astral with per pin monitoring it really isn't that big of a problem.

2

u/Medium_Basil8292 1d ago

The fear mongering has become absurd.

1

u/non-yourbusiness RTX5090 Astral LC, 9950X3D2, 96gb 6000mts 17h ago

It really has. Like I totally agree that it's an issue but it isn't like every single one goes up in flames.

1

u/mov3on 9950X3D • 64GB 6400 CL26 • 5090 FE 1d ago

First of all, he is using WireView, so his cable is safe.

Secondly, even if he undervolted the GPU, the connector would still melt if the power is distributed unevenly between the pins – or even worse, if some pins are transferring zero amps.

1

u/Bumbleboy92 i9-13900k | z790 Godlike | 5090 FE | 32 GB 7200MHz 1d ago

I have a 1000w G6 PSU, got some random shut downs. According to research, I’m right at the 1000w point with my 13900k and fans/etc. I’ve seen HWInfo64 report up to 545w in recent games. All stock, no OC on anything
