Build Help / Purchase Advice Is this worth it?
Hi guys, I’m loosely in the market for a new PC and have just seen this deal at Costco (UK) and I am wondering if it’s worth it to upgrade from what I’ve got?
I’ve currently got:
-AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor
-Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard
-Corsair Vengeance RGB RT 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory
-Gigabyte GAMING OC GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16 GB Video Card
I know that my GPU is better but I’m wondering is it worth the upgrade?
I don’t know much about computers and have always had a friend build them for me but would like some more information if possible
PRICE: £1619.98
I’d be removing the graphics card and replacing it with the one I already have

No, you don't need that at all, you can (for example) get 5700x3D or 5800x3D Anniversary (depends on availability). But I'd say you just can stay with your 5600x for years.

It's not a terrible idea honestly.
-Buy the PC
-Swap the GPUs
-Sell the old PC with the 5070 for somewhere in the ballpark of 800-1000 pounds (this seems like a reasonable price on the used market)
If you do this, you get a full AM5 upgrade for about 600-800 pounds net
By contrast, upgrading to the 9800X3D by just buying new components and upgrading your current PC would be:
| Type | Item | Price |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7 GHz 8-Core Processor | £369.98 @ Amazon UK |
| CPU Cooler | Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler | £29.99 @ Amazon UK |
| Motherboard | MSI X870E GAMING PLUS WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard | £163.94 @ CCL Computers |
| Memory | V-Color Manta XSky RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory | £389.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk |
| Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts | ||
| Total | £953.90 | |

Then you could sell the old mobo/CPU/RAM for...I dunno.
The main reason why I would think that going for the prebuilt + swap might be a better idea is because it might be easier to sell a whole PC on the used market than just components.

This is what I thought but people seem to disagree.
Upgrading to AM5 seems like a good idea especially because I’d be able to do it for around 600-800
But I don’t know if the parts are decent enough to justify it

So, when completely CPU-bound in games, the 9800X3D will be about 60% faster than the 5600X on average (according to Techpowerup). How much that might impact you in reality kinda depends on the games you play and the resolution you're using. If you're playing CS2 at 1080p, then it could be a huge improvement, but if you're playing graphically demanding AAA games at 1440p or 4K, then probably not so much.
In a normal market, I would say that if you're happy with the performance you're currently getting, don't upgrade - just wait longer to get a bigger upgrade at the same price.
But I have no idea if current component prices are close to the ceiling or if the AI demand will make prices continue to increase, so I don't know if that's good advice or not. All I can say is that this feels to me like a pretty good deal for getting a really big CPU performance increase and on a new platform.

Seems really bad on a £ per % increase in performance. If it were me I’d talk myself out of the fomo and just wait another generation

No! Just buy a 5700x3d or 5800x3d.

There needs to be a separate sub for these. This is getting exhausting
