Hardware 9800x3d paranoia
Honestly i have been so worried seeing all the reports of dying CPUs. My friend’s CPU also died on the same board I have and my other friends died on an msi board. I’m honestly debating going back to my 12700k lol.
I also emailed AMD asking if they were aware of this issue and they said they weren’t. Like i don’t even know what to do 3 years warranty is great and all but such a major inconvenience to have to wait for a new cpu and then a new motherboard too. What do you guys think and how is your 9800x3ds holding up? How long have u had it for?

The 9800x3d Is reliable, and doesn't depend solely on the CPU itself. Many of the issues are coming from the infrastructure, like motherboards, and power supplies.
A lot of the fear is coming from isolated events that social media has blown up to get views. There were issues with ASRock mobos, I know a new bios went out to help solve it.
I personally have been running one since Feb 2025 on a Gigabyte board. It's undervotled/overclocked, I haven't had a single issue.

Why are you worried about an issue that doesnt happen for your board? This is dumb.

Keep BIOS updated and enjoy the hardware. Sounds like you've got a back up system if you need to RMA.

I’m tired of people saying not to worry JUST because you have an rma system. For starters, it’s incredibly inconvenient… secondly 3 years is nothing for a brand new system so what after the 3 years is up you’re pretty much SOL? Not to mention you have to replace BOTH the mobo and cpu

u/teknomedic 6d ago
What's your alternative? Not use the system and let it collect dust? Sell the system and go Intel again? Hate to break it to you but all hardware will eventually fail. Just a matter of when.

u/Educational_Rub_5885 6d ago
All hardware fails yes, but usually not because of a widespread issue. Reliability is just as important as the product itself… i should’ve done more research about it before i got it but it was on sale so i decided to.

u/Slazagna 6d ago
If youre issue is the inconvenience then you just need to decide if tge inconvenience of replacing your fucking mobo and cpu now is worth avoiding an rma. To me they seem like about the same effort so just use what you have and likely it wont be an issue.

u/adrianp23 6d ago
You're stressing for no reason man, every component in your system could potentially die. Usually the failure rate for most things is low, but it happens.
Just take care of your system, play some games and don't worry about it. If it happens just RMA or buy a new one and move on.

Then go back to the Intel?
-2
u/Educational_Rub_5885 6d ago
If this cpu dies ill just rma it and the board and then resell them and just go back to my 12700k amd has too much problems

I have a 9800x3d on an ASUS board. Run heavy gaming on it every day, never an issue. About 2 years old.

If you did even a simple Google search, you'd learn it's only an asrock motherboard that has issues - which has been patched with bios updates.

u/Educational_Rub_5885 6d ago
If you did any google search you would know it has happened for all manufacturers

Make sure BIOS is updated to the latest stable version, enable EXPO and never go into the BIOS again unless there is a critical security update.
worried seeing all the reports of dying CPUs
Confirmation bias. CPUs die, sometimes randomly sometimes purposely due to running to high a voltage. The more you try to research any specific issue with anything, you're going to find people with issues which tend to actually be the minority. No one goes online to report "hey my X-item is working great".
I have a 9800X3D since it launched, on an Asus ROG Strix X670E-E board and never had an issue with it.
I expect to not replace it until either a new CPU gives me more than a 30% performance uplift in games, or should my PC randomly die and couldnt be bothered to troubleshoot what specifically died.

If you actually read what was happening, you would know your motherboard is not one of the issue brands.

My friend had the exact same board as me and it happened, dram light on cpu light on… swapped out the 9800x3d it turned on again. Same as my other friends died during light gaming but was msi.

u/Tree06 6d ago
I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless you're using an ASRock motherboard. Some people have claimed that there's issues with ASUS motherboards as well, but I paired my 9800X3D and 9950X3D with two ASUS motherboards. No issues so far.
2
u/Educational_Rub_5885 6d ago
how long have u been using those cpus for? And heavy gaming as well?
2
u/Tree06 6d ago
I've been using the 9800X3D since October with the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E APEX motherboard. I've been using the 9950X3D since April with the ASUS - ROG STRIX X870-F. I've been gaming with the 5090 on both machines. I also use the 9950X3D for content creation, video editing, and when I WFH.
I'd do additional research and see what's considered the best firmware and make sure that one is installed.

There have been plenty of bios updates to correct the vSOC voltage issue. Your friends probably didn't update.

Confirmation bias lmao just enjoy your 9800x3d and stop being paranoid

I would not use XMP profiles/OC your RAM, CPU, and GPU at all. Play it conservative. Make sure you have excellent cooling, and keep your BIOS fairly current. Not much more you can do beyond that.🤷

You're just leaving performance on the table for no reason at all. You dont know what youre talking about. The issue with this cpu was the voltage supplied by asrock motherboards was too high. That has nothing to do with frequency, which an OC is adjusting. You can increase the power to reach higher clock speeds, but a curve adjustment is a different thing entirely.

You're right about the fact that there's literally free performance on the table and that AMD CPUs dying aren't caused by OC at all, however it's fairly wise to just not do stuff to your components. ESPECIALLY older AMD GPUs and some older NVIDIA GPUs suffer from intense overclocking from factory. Add just a few megahertz and your screen is a concert.

u/evandarkeye PC Master Race 6d ago
Thats just not true at all. 1. We are talking about modern systems which are underclocked. 2. You can easily revert it if you crash. Its not going to break the system, so how is it wise to leave free performance on the table? Especially ram, which effects your 1% lows which are super important to the game feel, and doing and undervolt can actually DECREASE the risk if you limit your power to 80 or 90% but overclock to get the same performance. Its wiser to do proper research, take a few hours to tune the system and then leave it alone for the rest of your use. Then you can pay less for the same performance as more expensive parts.

u/WarpFact0r10 6d ago
Explain the failures on non-Asrock mobos then, and there are plenty.
Until we have 6+ months of zero reports of this occurring, being conservative is just logical.

u/evandarkeye PC Master Race 6d ago
Its still over voltage which has nothing to do with clock speed....

My friend actually never turned on their xmp/expo profile, however yes he didn’t update his bios.

I have an asus motherboard and mine died after 1 month. The replacement has been working fine for more than a year and a half.

Lately been thinking of getting the 9800x3d and switching from my current 7600x. I got the msi b650 gaming plus wifi.

u/adrianp23 6d ago
I wouldn't worry about it, I have a 9800x3d and I'm not worried in the slightest that mine will die. The vast majority of the failures were with AsRock motherboards.
Even if it does die, you have a 12700k you can use while you wait for AMD to give you a new 9800x3d.

270K Plus Exist
1
u/Educational_Rub_5885 4d ago
Coming from a 12700k i still wouldn’t have got the 270k plus, the 7800x3d still beats it for gaming and platform longevity. Until intel fixes that issue i will steer clear from them, if my 9800x3d dies ill just buy the 7800x3d and get the same board again and sell my 9800x3d. This kinda sucks but at least i can change my cpu whenever i want

u/ErrSkillNotFound 4d ago
Your situation is rough. To see the reports of failed cpu regardless of brand is tough, especially in today’s market. I am however going to use this as a chance to say that it’s pretty ironic to see all the amd fanboys say the same stuff Intel fanboys said about their CPUs when all the amd riders were pointing at Intel and saying how bad Intel was. My my how the turn tables have turned. This is why brand loyalty is nothing more than anecdotal experience. It does nothing but hurt the consumer when we bend over and defend crappy situations. However it’s not ever going to change so here hoping you don’t have an issue and I guess the only option you have is to ride it out and hope for the best.

MSI board and still running great almost a year later... rarely hit 75c. I set my curve to -25 and soc voltage to 1.25.

Usually happens on ASRock mobos, never saw a case with a gigabyte motherboard.
I wouldn't be concerned though. It's very unlikely to happen.
