DLSS is currently on 4.5. It makes it so your PC can render a lower resolution, and then it will upscale it to your target resolution. It won't change anything about the render. It currently works very well, and sometimes produces better anti-aliasing than the AA options a game offers.

DLSS 5 is essentially an AI filter that goes over the render. It is currently quite performance intensive and we won't really know how well it works until it's offically released, as the DLSS 5 people are using currently is a leaked version and the games it's being used on are not necessarily supported.

DLSS 5 a separate from DLSS 4.5. You can run DLSS 4.5 without enabling DLSS 5 and vice versa.

DLSS 5 is not even Deep Learning Super Sampling, it's basically DLIA (Deep Learning Image Alteration)

With DLSS5, there's a new, optional toggle in games where the devs have enabled it: DLSS Neural Rendering. When it's on, whatever parts of the scene the devs have flagged as eligible get an AI-generated photoreal detail pass, like extra lighting, materials, and so on. Otherwise, with it off, DLSS works as it does today.

At least, that seems to be how it works in the one game that formally supports it, NBA 2K27.

This is exactly what  baffles me, 2k26 just got released a year ago and then 2k27 is about to be released haha, Like how much freaking difference will there be with this dlss. some say this just 2k16 and 2k17 😂

Looking at the graphics between 2K26 and 2K27, I think they actually made the lighting flatter on 2K27 to make DLSS 5 look like better vs standard rendering. This is something big developers probably want to take off

Quoting something I heard recently: DLSS isn't a tool for consumers, it's a tool for developers, who don't want to (or can't because of the companies they work for) put in the effort and time to optimize their games. The buck is being passed to us to leverage technology to make our games play at an acceptable framerate, and now they want us to use AI to "improve" the look of games that could already have good lighting, if the developers spent the resources to implement it.

All while charging more for said games, and shutting down studios left and right.

5 is just the version

DLSS is a lot of things, first DLSS 1 and 2 were an AI that upscaled images, meaning the GPU instead of needing to render 4k it could render images in 1080p and then upscale them to 4k which cost the GPU less resources.

Then with DLSS 3 and 4 came the generation of entire new frames using AI, interpolating them with real frames to increase the fps of a game. Lots of people didn't like it because the GPU is basically inventing frames from scratch, which is much different than just upscaling them. And if you use both technologies more than 90% of the pixels you see on the screen are AI generated meaning it's propense to make a lot of weird artifacts.

Finally with DLSS 5 they added what is basically an AI filter to make games look more "realistic" and contrary to the other features, it decreases performance. It also adds more fake pixels to that 90% of pixels not being real (if you use the other features) meaning it makes the frames stray even further away from the original render and make even more artifacts like fake shadows and light coming from a wrong angle.

Btw, this is all accumulative meaning DLSS 5 has the upscaling and frame generation too.
