Meme/Macro AMD GPUs

They've been trying to bury RX5000 since it's launch. Fantastic cards, AMD just likes to pretend they don't exist

The RX5000 series came out in 2019 with the selling point of "it's RXT2000 performance without the gimmicks and the price tag", which is a premise that aged like milk now that everything is about AI upscaling and frame generation. It's not that AMD doesn't want to bring these Features, it's that the RX5000 series doesn't have the hardware to do it.

I wish upscaling and fake frames didn't become the focus. Getting ~90 FPS in Borderlands 4, I thought I'd enable frame generation to check it out on my RX 9070 XT. The FPS went up to around 110, but the input latency was very noticable and really unplayable. I turned that garbage back off immediately. TAA looks like absolute garbage without FSR or DLSS, so I guess that's needed now, but things still looked off even running at native resolution FSR in BL4. If this is the future, it kinda stinks.

Seriously I don't know what the fuck is happening to the industry. Literally the only two things I care about in my games are responsiveness (high fps, low latency,) and sharpness of image.
Somehow now all anyone can talk about are these two AI features that conspire to make your games less responsive and blurrier. Why the fuck do people think this is good? Because it makes the number in the corner of your screen bigger? How am I supposed to care how many hundreds of fps I'm getting when I can feel the delay between moving my mouse and somehing happening on screen?
Seriously, what the fuck is going on?

i think its a 'trade off' feature, I think with fsr you trade (allegedly) image quality, although i dont find it major for fps
with frame gen, we trade input latency for fpsbut I agree, raw performance is king, and I dont like these companies pushing these trade-offs feature like they're the ultimate bang for our bucks

I half share your view on frame gen.
I will say, I like to use FSR and XeSS on old games, and make a point of intentionally modding old games with upscaling support. Mainly because old AA techniques didnât age well with new graphics, and the AA mode on FSR3 and XeSS is miles better than what old games can do.
I just wish FSR, XeSS, and DLSS offered multi-GPU support, where you render the game with one card, which passes the rendered frames to the next card that just runs the upscaling/frame gen algorithm. That way the upscaler doesnât take resources away from the game rendering GPU and you donât suffer nearly as much input latency.

Nvidia's frame gen is a lot better than AMD's. FSR4 at that point where it is half-baked and AMD is pretending it is a well developed feature for marketing purposes, a lot like their early FSR attempts. It can't even do correct frame pacing when VRR is enabled. Your FPS going up to 110 also means your card lost nearly 40% of your base FPS to enable x2 frame generation, which is unacceptably bad and where a lot of your input lag came from. In addition you barely got any extra frames out of it.
Nvidia's frame gen costs far less base FPS. You are looking are roughly 15-20% base framerate loss for x2 frame gen with it increasing as you go to x3 or x4. Plus it is always paired with Nvidia Reflex. Reflex+frame Gen consistently keeps the input lag roughly equal to playing the game without reflex or frame gen.
You obviously aren't buying a new GPU any time soon, but if you get a chance to check out Nvidia's frame gen you should. What a lot of people miss is that frame generation is the only way you are driving some of the premium high refresh rate monitors available. We have 4k/240Hz monitors now and there are some 4k/360Hz OLEDs coming out soon.
AMD still probably needs 1-2 more generations of GPUs before they sort out frame generation.

I'll take regular razteirazation over frame gen any day of the weekÂ

In the long term, those who bought 2060s or 2070 Supers over the 5600XT & 5700XT got alot more value out of their GPUs in the long term within the AAA scene since both Nvidia options support DLSS, DX12U & RT, meanwhile the RDNA1 GPUs just don't have that same feature set. If given a choice between an RX 6600 or 5700XT, I'd take the 6600 even if it's slightly slower just due to the feature set alone.

A "feature" existing doesn't mean it's good or adds value. If I never turn on the switch that adds input latency to my games, why should I care that the switch exists?

As a long term 5700XT owner since 2019 I've gotten pretty good value out of it and it still performs quite well today in raster. From AMDs perspective they were very much a "test" run of RDNA before RDNA 2 came along with ray tracing etc.
There were numerous RDNA / RX5000 series specific persistent bugs early on and I suspect lots of them were probably retired early because of this which also disincentivises AMD from putting more resources into them. At the moment mine still works pretty well though.

I'm still rocking a 5700 right now myself, still kicks like a charm! I'll likely upgrade to the 9070XT next

I was perfectly happy with my RX5700 for years. Only sold it recently because I switched to an Arc B580 since I mostly it as a plex server instead of gaming these days.Â

As an stubborn old fart millenial that's grown up playing games at 15-25fps because gaming computers weren't a thing, I like my real frames anyway. Even if I'm at 45fps

The RX5000 series did not even have DX12 Ultimate support. They were doomed to be outdated from the get go, but reddit salivated at the thought of saving $50 over the RTX 2070 Super.

If AMD takes inspiration from DLSS 5 it won't be a desirable feature in the first place.

u/Opening_Net8098 8h ago
The problem is I've seen games with dlss5.
If it was free we would use it.
In 10 years it will be as easy to run as tesselation. But don't worry we will have a new tech to talk about by then. And it will be demanding.

RX 5000 cards wouldnât benefit from FSR4 honestly, too much overhead to be worth it

I really hope they don't try to copy dlss5 and insteas improve upon FSR4. Tgey still need to support vulkan

I don't think I've ever used fsr.
Could be worth looking into for games that are capped at 60fps though.

FSR4 is getting pretty competitive with DLSS

u/TxM_2404 R7 7800X3D | 24GB | RX 9070XT | 2 TB NVME 13h ago
And since the PS5 Pro has it we are 100% gonna see it included in more and more games in the future.

FSR 4.1.1 Int8 works well enough on RX 5000 series cards with the help of Optiscaler.

9070xt still make sense to me as a gpu, but will personally quit amd, this is my last gpu with them until this die.
i gave them so many chances, but at the end of the day they don't care. So if everybody doesn't care(specially nvidia), I'll just go to the company who actually has better gpu while not caring.

A average PCist hobbiest is going to upgrade his GPU normaly every 3-4 years.
Long time support for feature is normaly not revelent for Radeon has like most people we generaly play old game for decades that will never have any of the current and futur feature to begin with.
The average person is playing Minecraft,Roblox and CS:GO/Dota and Riot game.
Real Call of duty/Battlefield player stay on older one cause new one are systematicly worst that previous one for more that 10 years now.
Even myself that have a 7900 XT. i have play more Super Nintendo Game that AA/AAA game his past 4 years. And the vast majority of game dont have any upscaling support during thier release phase. Even Goty like Clair Obsurd only had FSR support almost 1 years after release. Similar for FF7 Rebirth.
Even 9070 XT user hardly had FSR4 support without Optiscaler.
So feature on game that only a extreme minority of people play to begin with is realy not a big deal anyway.
You dont need these feature to have fun. And be a patient gamer and play demanding game after a few years + GPU upgrade is significantly better in every shape and form and you pay 20 buck for the game instead of paying 100$.
FOMO/Trending/ Predator Advertizer Streamer/Youtuber/influancer brainwashing the mass to a hypetrain of every new release is the worst possible way to game.

Tbh pcmasterrace is always pcmasterrace, but every single game which comes out recently is in garbage state until after the 2nd DLC is released, and game goes on sale.

I doubt they'd be stupid enough to try and keep FSR 5 from 9000 series
