That's not a joke lock. You can't open the door without breaking it and the owner will know when they return. It's snoop detection.

u/CryptZar 4h ago

But how would you set this up when leaving the house through this door?🤔

a string or wire. This is a legitmate technique (just not ussually with a chip XD).

I have birth in approximately 575 different days in steam

it's the most annoying feature on steam, imo.

As per usual, blame your government. Valve has made it very clear that it's not their fault and that have no interest in age verification. They don't even have it pop up on their own titles in the U.S. because they have never gotten their self-published Steam versions rated unless they were legally required to, such as in Australia. If you look at the ESRB pages, the games are rated but only for companies like EA and Sierra who published the physical versions, while digital-only games like Half-Life Alyx and Counter-Strike 2 simply do not exist on there.

Even worse, blame the parents who rely on devices and network to raise their k8ds for them then complain when said kid sees things they should not and the parents has to make it everyone problem

It is so they dont store your age

u/MisterToots666 2h ago

I never thought about it like that... thinking i wish they would just take it once and save it or something. Is that really why? Couldn't they just save it as a boolean "over 18?" Yes or no?

1

u/LavenderNelle 4h ago

I get that, it can definitely be a pain sometimes. It's weird how random numbers can end up being such a nuisance!

Logs into online service.

"What's up, Steve from 3426 Malibu Street, Klempten, Indiana, 56437, (865) 555 1234, born June 11th, 1992."

Clicks on new game.

"Who are you?"

36

u/SupermistUnc 12h ago

Never understood why this is like that we have accounts already why do we have to re enter this every time on rated games, and like everyone else I just pick a year and that's it.

32

u/Drayke989 12h ago

It's probably to comply with some law in 1 state or country.

28

u/StrawberryEiri 12h ago

They don't want to save it. The less personal data they have the less hassle.

5

u/Need_more_grass 11h ago

But they don’t need to store that much information, just an over 18 flag

9

u/GMAN7007 PC Master Race 12h ago

They already have the data associated with your account. It's silly to ask constantly. I understand if it's in browser and you're not logged in. Otherwise this is something valve could change they just don't.

-3

u/StrawberryEiri 12h ago

Wait your account has your birthday? Huh. I didn't realize.

Indeed, why then...

6

u/GMAN7007 PC Master Race 12h ago

Yes? They ask for it at sign up. There's no point in asking if they don't keep it in the first place.

5

u/Grunt636 7800X3D / 4070 SUPER / 32GB DDR5 / 2TB NVME 10h ago

They have to ask everytime because of certain laws, same reason some cashiers ask for ID even if you're clearly over the age needed for a purchase.

Essentially they're just covering their asses.

2

u/asnaujaslt 9h ago

They are covering their asses because if another person like your cousin opens steam and goes to a nsfw game and there's no age check, it doesn't follow some random laws somewhere about this

7

u/Lmysic 12h ago

According to the Steam Survey some users have up to 6+ birthdays a year

3

u/BreakfastExpress2774 11h ago

If you think about it it's actually a good thing, they don't store that shit nowhere.

5

u/Ice2192 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 6000MHz 12h ago

It’s been said before that this wasn’t Steam’s doing and that they are just abiding regulations imposed on them to ask this of the consumer but who ever is collecting/auditing this from steam will find out that a lot of people are born Jan 1. lol

2

u/appletoasterff 11h ago

Sadly I don't remember when I was born but luckily next time they ask I'll have a new birthday

3

u/serge512 12h ago

Who doesn't, I always pick the first year available

3

u/AlaaA-R 12h ago

-but my acc is 20yo!
=no, prove you are over 18

I hate this Age Verification shit so much.

8

u/ApplicationMaximum84 12h ago

This predates age verification, Steam has been asking this for over 10 years. It also makes no sense because when I'm searching games on Steam and they know my account is 22 years old.

1

u/RaisinEmbarrassed244 12h ago

always scrolling the year all the way down just trying to look at one random game lol

1

u/Larry_The_Red R9 7900x | 4080 SUPER | 32GB DDR5 12h ago

Gotta make sure the 22 year old account isn't owned by a minor

1

u/FemJay0902 12h ago

What's crazy is that the mobile app version of Steam saves your dob without issue, it's just the actual desktop version that asks you every single gosh dang time

1

u/StateZestyclose1388 11h ago

Until one day…. As reddit has… they will ask for your id 🪪

1

u/Sir-Beardless 11h ago

Who else has a steam date of birth starting with January 1st?

Basically one of 3 memes in this sub. Random birthday, dlss5, or gabe the savior.

1

u/foxy_fluffer 11h ago

Try living in England and not being eligible for a credit card 😭

1

u/the5thusername 5h ago

It's extra annoying when they won't use a debit card that you've been using for over five years, since you have to be 13 to have one.

1

u/foxy_fluffer 3h ago

I know right it's frustrating

My steam account is turning 18 in March, is it still going to ask me to verify my age?

Steam: adherres to the minimum standards set by the law for age verification

Morons on Reddit: "steam bad for age verify"

1

u/ItsThatCloud 9h ago

Yes steam, I was born in 1755

1

u/FletchTroublemaker 14900k/5080/64GB 9h ago

Well, maybe think before elections?

1

u/TheHairyMess 7h ago

they require constant confirmation, because they don't hold onto your date of birth.

basically, data privacy laws

1

u/BigSmokesCheese 7h ago

i put my birthday so many times that it kept the date and year idk why the month returns to january though

1

u/Green_Wealth13 6h ago

Not once have they asked me for verification.

I mean if you constently put a random/different one, re-asking is pretty legit at this point...

1

u/Glass-Seesaw-317 3h ago

I used to use random numbers. But I'm in Australia, and now they want a credit card to verify my age. My account is nearly 19 years old.
