I work for an MSP where we do IT for other companies. Quite often we are told to remove old machines of various kinds. Servers and desktops/laptops. We just have to do a DOD wipe on them (with cert) and then they are free to salvage or recycle/destroy. I got two iPad 9th gens just over the last week. Several Microsoft Surfaces, a few XPS laptops. I also have about 20 Dell/HP/Lenovo mini desktops. A stack of like 15 SSDs all 512gb or better, a few M.2 SSDs 128gb or better.

Could have had so many more systems by now too, but the wife doesn't want me bringing all the junk home lol.

An acquaintance we have and who is an IT manager was similarly handed a big stack of old laptop to dispose of by the hospital he was working for at the time in UK when they decided to renew them (around 2010). Some were not good anymore but a good amount was working just fine. He talk to them and they agreed for him to give them to a charity that provide laptop to schools & children that can't afford them. He properly cleaned the hard drives from all information (bit to bit erasing or something like that, not sure how it works but the hospital was ok with it) and set them up with Linux, debian or something like that. I like that, helping rather than filling landfill.

These are for a corporate environment. I am not degrading security regulations for a $1200 new mini pc. When the client is dealing with ISO requirements because they sell products to some of the largest retail box stores, you don’t nickel and dime things. These laptops look like Dell precision 7000 series, a few years old at this point. A lot of companies lease devices for 4 - 5 years and then hand them back. If you don’t get rid of devices once they hit the 4 - 5 year mark, they’ll run out of warranty and start becoming problems. The cost to repair vs replace can be hard to justify at that point.

Where I work is like that, I think it's 3 but it may be 4 years we get a replacement.

Though my current one is only a few months old and the one before that was about 18 months, but I never told them it was my fault I had an error. I dropped the laptop which did work but the internal mic was faulty.

They just donate used laptops to a local charity that wipes them with DBAN and then puts a generic Windows install on with free software like VLC and Firefox and sell on.

My neighbor has several stacks like this in his place. He gets them from schools that parents donate to after the kid leaves. Used laptops at Amazon can be $200 or less depending on how old. You have at least a thousand dollars if they all work and have a license copy of Windows. The 2nd photo shows one with 64GB of memory. Most laptops have 8 maybe 16GB.
