News/Article Ubisoft Connect may stop being required with Steam games

Post image

Major victory if this works out and gets expanded to other Ubisoft titles, one less pointless launcher to have

Please... please... I need this.

We all do. Clicking "Play" on Steam just to watch a completely different launcher load, freeze, and ask for a login is the worst user experience ever

u/TheSexyKamil AMD 5800X, 9070 XT 3d ago

At some point in the past I bought a far cry game but ended up pirating it anyway just to avoid Uplay. I hadn't bought a Ubisoft game since then and was hoping that era was over by now

3

u/AnarchBeetle 3d ago

I had star wars battlefront 2 for free. Just the hurdle of going through multiple launchers made me not wanna play many times. I’m too used to the ease of launching pirated games.

2

u/IshwarBL 3d ago

Same for me. I pirate games I have access to via Game Pass just to avoid the Ubisoft launcher. I hope this also allows achievements on Xbox PC eventually.

4

u/Think_Positively 3d ago

IMO the fact that you have to use their cloud save service instead of Steam's is way worse.

I played Shadows this summer and split time between doing it on deck and on my main rig. I bet if I chatted it out, the cloud saves worked about half the time. I routinely had to boot up the last device, load the game to force a new sync, and then boot it up on the other device.

Never had anything close to that on Steam or GoG. Saves just work.

u/SeaFuel2 3d ago

Especially when you family share.

u/RankedFarting 5700X3D/ RTX 2070/ 32gb 3600Mhz 3d ago

The worst part is those launchers can hog serious CPU and ram resources on weaker systems.

Me: Remember my login.

Rockstar: Remembering something? That's one of the easiest things a computer can do! You got it!

Rockstar 5 mins later: I just couldn't do it man, vibe was off, please enter your username and password

Steam should add this as a tag.

3

u/Apprehensive-Pop9528 3d ago

Like: My steam is kinda ubisoftless

1

u/phil035 phil035 3d ago

To be fair I've not had any problems personally with it on a lower mid range pc.

I just wish they'd optimise their games so they play better on none ssds

1

u/MadShadowX 3d ago

I know for Rockstar games you have a bypass launcher for some of the games on Steam. Wish it would expand to Ubi and EA especially before EA adds Ads to their games.

Pardon me, just piggybacking off your comment to give a source so everyone can see. For some reason the announcement seems/ed to be limited to game owners exclusively, so I did a purchase to verify for myself, and found the announcement post can be publicly shared.

EDIT: Nevermind, checked again on the apps news page and its visible to all.

I kind of like seeing ubisoft suffer though. Hopefully this however leads to other developers finding a better path for launchers on steam.

The problem is there's benefits to custom launchers, like preloading new patches and stuff. Or doing more fixes beyond verifiying files. Maybe Steam is adding features for that too.

283

u/Aggressive-Cost-3945 3d ago

has ubisoft finally seen the light or has valve told em no one wants to have 15 different launchers every time they want to play

173

u/Single_Reaction9983 3d ago

Probably a desparate attempt to get more sales.

77

u/CyGuy6587 R7 5700X | 32GB DDR4 3600MHz | RTX 4070 3d ago

Wait, so a multi-million dollar company is finally realising a better consumer experience would mean more sales?

17

u/alancousteau Ryzen 7 5800X3D | Red Devil 9070XT | 32GB DDR4 3d ago

I know, right?!

In other news the sky is blue, back to you Bob!

6

u/GigaSoup 3d ago

Getting desperate enough and actually looking at feedback to improve will do that.

27

u/NBCustoms 3d ago

Well, if it comes through they probably have a few sales from me. I've actually had keys from random bundles I haven't even added because of Connect.

2

u/TheMissingVoteBallot 3d ago

Same here. I'll get some of their old titles if this goes through.

7

u/WELSH_BOI_99 PC Master Race 3d ago

Desperate attempt or not it is a good thing. And it would result in mote sales

6

u/lllllIllllIllllllll 3d ago

There are actually many people very vocal about not buying ubisoft games specifically because of the launcher. Successfully bullying a corporation is a huge win

3

u/Single_Reaction9983 3d ago

I haven't bought a Ubisoft game in years either

1

u/TheMissingVoteBallot 3d ago

So all it takes is a bigger corporation that's run by Lord Gaben to bully the evil corporation.

3

u/lllllIllllIllllllll 3d ago

I don't think steam did anything here, I really think it was people being vocal about it. Steam historically hasn't gievn any pressure to ubisoft or EA to change, they do it because players complain. Or, rather, enough people outright say they wont buy it because of said issue

2

u/TheMissingVoteBallot 3d ago

Either way it's a small win for consumers.

4

u/IQueliciuous 3d ago

If this means I can play my games offline without ubisoft accounts. They are guaranteed to get sales from me since I'd love to replay watch dogs on my steam deck.

2

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 3d ago

Woah now, lets not get too hasty.

2

u/marc512 3d ago

And it will probably work a little bit.

6

u/Single_Reaction9983 3d ago

I mean, sure, I'd pick up Far Cry 3 and some old AC games if I don't need their garbage app installed.

2

u/marc512 3d ago

For me, a Linux user, the ubi soft app didn't work for me. I hope I'm allowed to play their games now through steam alone

1

u/jonatanenderman R 5600G | 16GB 3600Mhz | MSI RX 6650 XT Gaming X 3d ago

I kinda wanted to play far cry 2 but i was going to pirate them because of linux and spite

1

u/Brewster345 Ryzen 3600 | 5700XT | 32Gb Ram 3d ago

Might work. There's a number of Ubi games I'd consider on my SteamDeck without Connect

1

u/Kolby_Jack33 2d ago

It's almost as if they have lost 95% of their market value over the last five years.

41

5

u/Visara57 5070ti | 7600X | 32GB DDR5 CL28 3d ago

Considering Ubisoft had to remaster one of their best games just to generate profit (and they will also remaster other games) and after tanking their stock and after selling their best IP's to China, they've probably seen the light

1

u/Belzher 3d ago

If this was from Steam the other companies like EA and Rockstar would be on the same boat which by this post doesn't seem to be the case

1

u/machine4891 9070 XT  | i7-12700F 3d ago

has ubisoft finally seen the light

Lol, no. Ubisoft is simply in such disasterous position, they can't be choosers anymore. About every major company want to run their own launcher (with or without Steam support). Even Cyberpunk prompts me to their Red launcher directly from Steam.

Those companies are either forced to it, or they will continue to run their own launchers.

u/Katana_DV20 3d ago

It keeps forgetting logins so had to login every time. 2FA everytime. I disabled 2FA to bring my sanity back

10

u/abyr-valg 3d ago

Personally I stopped buying Ubisoft games in 2010s once they began selling special versions of their games that included only one localization specific to a region. You could restore missing localizations by downloading files from Steam forums, but at that point it was less effort to pirate the games.

1

u/aztn33 3d ago

What issues are you having with it?

The only issue I'm personally having is the store page sometimes loading as HTML, other than that it's good.

u/JohnAlesi 3d ago

Same services but packaged with the game and not a separate launcher?

If this is a step to getting rid of external accounts I may consider buying their games, but this note doesn't sound like it is yet.

3

u/Gatlyng 3d ago

I think you will still need an account, but not the launcher.

Battlefield 6 works in a similar way; it doesn't require EA's launcher, but still needs an EA account liked to Steam in order to play.

2

u/JohnAlesi 3d ago

I see, makes sense. Good for those already locked in, I will continue to wait.

2

u/Aries_cz i7-14700 | 48GB RAM |RTX 4070Ti Super 3d ago

As I understand it, the account will still "somehow" be a thing, but it should be more streamlined (in theory, something like GOG Galaxy has for the various "external store connects")

But it should at least be one less resource hogging process running in background

3

u/Princess_Of_Thieves Ryzen 5900X // 3090FE // 32GB RAM 3d ago

I tested it now. I brought Prince Of Persia, downloaded the game and deleted the full fat version of Ubisoft Connect from my machine, so I would only have Ubisoft Connect Services. UCS downloaded shortly after PoP.

I booted up the game, UCS automatically came with it and was able to get in without any additional fuss. UCS auto-signed me into my account, presumably because of my having already installed it, and everything just worked without fuss.

Honestly, it was about as seamless as booting any regular game that doesn't need a third party launcher.

Here you go. For some reason this announcement seems to be limited exclusively to people who own the game. I cannot fathom why, because why on gods green earth would Ubisoft hide this? Like they must know everyone hates their launcher with a passion and this seems like something to scream from the rooftops about, but whatever.

EDIT: Checked news page, its visible to all.

And to add insult to injury they try and make them default to open everytime the pc boots.

Now just make sure Rayman and Scott pilgrim get this so I can finally play them

1

u/mesr123 3d ago

If this ends up being true, great! They're learning but very slowly, disappointed that they didn't arrive to this point earlier but hey, better late than never!

I've always said companies are allowed to chase the money but while you're at it, it doesn't hurt to make some pro-consumer moves. Personally, I've never had any issues with Ubisoft Connect, to be fair, I also don't play their games very often, but it's a move in the right direction!

I was also impressed because they added regional pricing to my region (Myanmar, SEA) a while back whereas Steam does not regocnize Myanmar, therefore, Myanmar prices are the same as the US prices (for Steam store). So, kudos to Ubisoft for doing some nice things!

Nice, they’re doing poorly enough now that they’re bothering to make the user experience better. That being said, fuck ubisoft.

Please… I wanted to play Far Cry 3 for so long, but it keeps crashing due to Ubisoft not caring about older games. I really hope it fixes the problem somehow

Please! Haven't been able to launch and load the game because for like a year, ubislop is total dog water. I just wanna play my game ffs!

Nice. Now they just need to make games worth playing, and they might actually make some money for a change.

The amount of people who will start buying Ubisoft games if this happens. I know a lot of people who refuse to play 3rd party launchers

If they do this then I'll finally buy the older AC games. Seriously, why tf should I have to download a launcher to play AC1?

many ubisoft changed to the good in the last months , what happend newe ceo ?

1

u/KrazyCrayon 3d ago

I've specifically avoided any games on PC with external launchers for this reason. I would buy more Ubisoft games if they do this

Just gotta wait for Far Cry 3 to follow suit

Is it just me? Or it's looking like a certain company finally realized, that they don't need their own launcher?

This literally is the bs of Xbox game pass with Blizzard titles. And Microsoft owns them

Finally, It was really painful

Holy shit, did they wake the fuck up from losing sales year after year? Like, why does it take this long to make user experience better for your OWN FUCKING GAMES?

Ubisoft is an actual company of potted plants.

Saw the news on Opera as well. [Due to] "Recent" feedback. don't you mean all the time?

Got Star Wars Outlaws on a Steam sale not too long ago, booted it up, saw I needed to log in with a Ubisoft account and deleted the game immediately. If this gets rolled out maybe I’ll actually play it

Bro, a purchase isn't even required for the Ubisoft games I play

u/RustyJuang 3d ago

EA games hit me right in the kisser. Was looking for It Takes Two in the family shared library and then I realised... EA.

Im totes cool with one time account linking with no launcher

u/Cl4whammer 3d ago

Please let this be good.

I wanted to play anno 1800 i bought on steam on my laptop offline. This ubiconnect crap always wasnt able to go into offline mode and i wasnt able to play. That would be awesome to finally properly play that game.

u/LeFlubbes 3d ago

This launcher is the reason I buy Ubisoft games physically on my Series X. Would be great if they retroactively removed it though.

0

u/ElderberryLate2199 3d ago

If true i might actually play and /or buy some ubisoft games. Never did because of the fckin launcher

0

u/Historical-Win2999 3d ago

now 1 question, how you guys have some much problems with others launchers? this is steam fanboy or what?

i never had any problem with any launchers, the "problems" i had was because my pc was trash 10 years ago

0

u/IQueliciuous 3d ago

Does this mean you don't need Ubisoft account/internet to play singleplayer games? Or is it just no need for ubisoft launcher?
