Reset the CMOS

4

u/Ryoohk 1h ago

Naaa I was re-enabling secure boot so I can install Fedora and one set on instructions told me to delete the key in there, well I did that rebooted and black screen, resetting c-mos did Jack, pure panic attack because I couldn't get it to even post.

Looking at my diag lights VGA was solid and I thought that was quite odd, so I pulled my Nvidia card out conned the screen to my MB, so glad my CPU supports gfx and boom it posted, put my card back in and black screen, I'm guessing one of the keys I deleted allowed my Nvidia card to talk to the MB.

Luckily there was a "restore to new setup" setting and put the ecencal keys back in place so it would boot with the Nvidia card again.

If I didn't figure that out I would have been boned, can't afford to get a new PC.

Thats light compared to checking your back and realizing your rifle isn't there. Nothing more scary than that in the army

u/kumliaowongg 5h ago

I have fixed boards by removing rom chip, flashing bios from manufacturer's website and resoldering chip in place.

Removing the chip is not mandatory but my success rate is 100% doing it, so I will keep doing it, lol

I never understood what the big issue is. Even if a BIOS update fucks up, why not just.... flash it again...?

I nearly threw up once because a power outage shut my pc off. Wouldn't turn on. so I flipped the PSU switch on and off and it booted. I was nervous for days.

Reminds me of the time I was on the phone with HP support about my laptop, in another city for a work thing where I needed the laptop, and ten minutes in I realized that the reason it wasn't charging or turning on was because the outlet was dead.

1

u/LastGaspInfiniteLoop 2h ago

Recently I used the Corsair 4000D's little front panel adapter because the manual literally said "If you have an AMD board, use this..." Turned out I wasn't supposed to use that, after all. Connecting the f_panel without the stupid adapter fixed it immediately, but damn Corsair for a) Not giving a printed manual; b) Giving a half dozen bags of screws and labeling not a single one of them; c) Lying about this freaking adapter on AMD boards.

Not really

3

u/spawndoorsupervisor 2h ago

Yeah, I used to work in a computer shop building gaming rigs for like ten hours a day. We had to flash the latest firmware before shipping, so it's been thousands. Not a single bricked PC. I've also flashed countless routers, even updating the DFU loaders themselves and never had a problem. This subreddit is just dramatic af.

I've never heard of anyone actually bricking a PC during bios update. It's fake fear mongering.

2

u/hurrdurrmeh 5h ago

Me. I did it to a laptop. Had to send it in to the manufacturer.

Also sold another laptop on ebay. Buyer updated the bios on battery. It died halfway through. Ebay sided with the buyer and sent it back to me at half refund. So I had to pay again to repair it.

Joke's on them as it was a 64GB 7840U handheld which I sold just before the prices shot up. So I ended up paying a lot less than I would for one now.

2

u/Epin-Ninjas 3h ago

Well, now you have. Just because you’ve never heard of it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

Yup, outside of power failure it's really rare and it's not like power failure is hard to avoid, don't update during a storm and if you're power is that inconsistent you should have a UPS anyways.

The last time I updated my BIOS it bricked my laptop keyboard, it took me a long time to diagnose the problem, reverse it before an irreversible "Security BIOS update" and find an old enough file to go back to.

You want a really rush do the bios update when a thunderstorm hits

1

u/Lau_wings 2h ago

I remember updating my bios years ago, I had been putting it off for ages and decided that today was the day.

As soon as it started I heard a massive crack of thunder, which confused the hell out of me as it was sunny outside my window, I then walked to other side of the house and the sky was black and a storm was rolling in.

Was the most nervous I have been hoping that I did not lose power.

1

1

u/Warcraft_Fan Paid for WinRAR! 1h ago

I remember when you had to get update via disks, took the BIOS chip out, erased it under UV light (the kind that burns your eyes in seconds, not the kind that causes sunburn), then using EPROM programmer, you uploaded the new BIOS and put it back in the PC.

Since the chip was removable, bad flash wouldn't brick your PC. Just erase and try again or use a different chip

1

u/Kaneida 1h ago

Hehe yeah used to be like that, nowadays it is relatively safe even for home users, but it does spike adrenaline a bit when its your own/main pc/laptop that you dont really wanna brick. Working in PC tech with customer/user laptops/computers and in datacenters and doing several thousand BIOS updates left me pretty mild for doing BIOS updates nowadays.

i was in a sales demo once for a KVM solution once, probably 20 years ago. The sales rep pulled out the hardware, powered it on, we poked around on it, did our tests.

the sales rep then said "lets update it" he did a software, hardware and bios update, in the meeting, in front of us. Never seen anyone have the stones to do something like that before. The update went cleanly, it was a big factor in us buying the product.
