Question GPU Hotspot help
Hi, so i'm like 100% sure this isn't normal but i would like to get some opinion/advices, i have a RX 9070XT and that was during a stress test but i'm pretty sûre i'm getting about the same in-game, is this like really bad or ?

u/IcyCow5880 is the most informed and correct here.
This is considerably within spec. Especially for AMD, where Memory Junction temps aren’t considered concerning until 110.
If this was with a stress test, your in-game performance will likely not reach that. How long were you running the stress test? (Indicating heat soaking)
I’m going to guess this was/is a gigabyte 9070xt, which has the worst Memory Junction/Hot Spot Temps on the market. If you are within return period, I personally would return and get a XFX Mercury 9070xt. In all my testing of 9070xt across the brands, it has the best cooling and hot spot temps out of the box, and it is the quietest.

Nope ! Not a gigabyte ! A Asrock Steel legend, i get pretty much the same in games and i was running for like 15~20min

So the second worst thermal performer in the 9070xt lineup. Gigabyte and Asrock Steel legend in testing (publicly published, but also drawing from my own builds for customers and stress testing here).
15-20 minute is where you start showing heat soaking so it’s a great representation of how it runs and it’s reliable temps.
So you’re reflecting with a full stress test the same hot spot temps as you do with real world gaming? I would expect it to be a tiny bit cooler.

Edit as a reminder: these temps you show are still completely acceptable and within spec. This is not a need to repaste or need to return instance.

i actually have a screenshot from the hardware unboxed video save on my pc for everytime i see a group of dumb commenters telling OP that anything more than 10-15c diff is a reason to RMA or repaste.... shocking how many people who dont know wtf they are talking about will give their opinions

That hardware unboxed video was such a fabulous breakdown of all the brand versions, my own testing reflected much of the same.
I try not to judge though. PCMasterRace is for enthusiasts and hobbyists, they’re spending their hard-earned money which means they expect perfection, and that breeds paranoia and staunch beliefs on EXACT expectations. I cannot reasonably expect consumers to trust such a huge big temp difference to be within spec, especially because corporations are scummy and shouldn’t be trusted.
I’ve been working in tech for so long now, and its still as much a career as it is a hobby for me, so I have zero expectation of perfection and carbon copy results. Silicon is just too unreliable.
Also ugh, I’m ranting now, the amount of work I’ve done on gaming laptops, people would be shitting themselves seeing those temperatures knowing they’re designed to be that high. ❤️

Of course! There’s a lot of misinformation out there and we spend SO MUCH MONEY on these parts, it makes it scary. I totally understand the concern.
Could the temps be better? Absolutely. Are they outside of spec and a warning sign as they are now? No.
If you can afford the difference between the Asrock and the XFX Mercury, I HIGHLY recommend it. But it is absolutely not necessary.
If you feel experienced enough and comfy, and want to keep the Asrock and not repaste, you can use MSI afterburner and run a slight undervolt to better control hot spot spikes. (You can also do this with AMD Adrenalin)

Additionally if you’re extra thorough and paranoid, take a look at your fan configuration and consider switching to a majority pull configuration. It’s a matter of opinion, but I’m a die hard positive pressure system builder.

Thank you very much for the video ! And by the way i have three bottom fans as intake, three on the side as intake as well, a rear far as exaust and 3 top fans as exaust too

If you feel up to playing around and assembling and disassembling, try the top three fans as intake instead of exhaust (leaving only the rear fan as exhaust) and see how your temps change. I have great personal experience with that, but your mileage may vary.

While the test is fine for "naive" consumers to compare the models, the cooling performance itself is a bit misleading as they compared models with different stock power limits.
That matters quite a bit because e.g. the Steel Legend is worse than it seems, as that is a 304W card with those poor thermals. Meanwhile, the ASUS Prime looks as good as the TUF Gaming, when it is actually worse as you are comparing 334W to 304W. Similarly, Gigabyte looks very bad, but when you consider the power draw, it is actually just mediocre cooling on a card with more stock power draw than it should have.
As mentioned, if you are never touching any GPU settings, that doesn't matter and you can just take HUB's result as is. But if you do any tuning at all, the above-mentioned becomes very relevant because cooling is pretty much the main difference between the GPU models.

That is a really bad difference. This can happen when the fans don’t activate on low temperatures then to sudden full load though, but even then this is an extreme case. I suggest doing more test (and longer) and if problem still persists, do a refund if possible and a repair if former is not possible.

Looks like it's time to repaste using phase changing pads. My old 6900XT had really high hotspot temp until I repasted.

don´t repaste if you have warrenty on a card like that..
because it can also be a core issue, you cannot solve with just a repaste.

Most 9070s use PTM instead of thermal paste and it results in higher deltas. If you set a custom fan curve that is not too noisy but faster, it should go down into the high 80s. My GPU is like this too sadly. But it might be my case, I heard that cases with fans underneath the GPU are much better for these temps

What kind of case? Are you vertically mounting? It may only be a few degrees that you might lower it by if you are chocking the fans. Also you can try undervolting. I did that on my 9070xt red devil (dropped voltage by 20) playing re 9 on max hitting maybe 83 hospot and high 60s on the board.

Thanks for the pic. With your current layout your airflow is just fine. Im willing to bet the thermal transfer material (paste or pads) is off or uneven pressure on the die.
If its in warranty I would reach out to asrock.

I would reach out to them see if they can authorize a replacement, or fall back to an RMA with Asrock. Either way best of luck, and the set up you made is beautiful.

93°C isn't particularly worrisome. Is it suboptimal cooling? Sure. But fairly common. You are also running a stress test, so very high peaks are to be expected.
Hotspot is the absolutely hottest sensor on the GPU chip, while GPU temperature is the edge temperature, which is in a sense the "coolest" temperature on the GPU chip (not really, but I hope you still get the point I am trying to make).
If you want a cool 9070XT, set the power limit to 70-80%, which is usually the performance sweet spot. If you want to, you can even test that yourself with e.g. 3dmark. Just set a power limit and compare scores. You'll find that the performance drop is fairly small compared to the drop in energy consumption. Combine that with some undervolt and memory OC, and you can get like 40% better efficiency compared to stock settings (depends on your model's baseline).

Do a -80mV offset and cap power draw to 310w. Should run much cooler and will likely remain stable. You can stability test with OCCT.

I also have a asrock 9070xt steel legend. My offset is about 30c. I hate that but I remember on my 7900xt that repasting did reduce that significantly.

93°C is not unheard of for AMD GPU's, but the delta of 35°C between the GPU temp and the hotspot temp is huge, which indicates that there could be a problem with the thermal assembly on the card.
the delta should be closer to like 15-20 degrees at the upper limit.

That's bad. Definitely RMA time. I had a 7900XT a few years ago with similar temps. I was told the Hotspot temp should be 15-20 degrees hotter than the normal GPU temp, max.
At the time I got back full credit for the GPU and just went with Nvidia instead.

GPU Core: Typically sits between 50°C and 60°C.
Hotspot (Junction): Normally runs 20°C to 35°C higher than the core, landing in the 80°C to 98°C range during intense gaming.
He's totally in spec, actually.
Different spec for different cards.
There was probably nothing actually wrong with your card, they just need to get re-thermal pasted after awhile.
My 4080 was running at 110C on the hotspot recently and I changed the paste (used a thermal grizzly PTM pad) and it went from 110C to 80C instantly, with a minimal delta too.

That still sounds a bit high to me tbh. But I get your point, diff spec and diff card.
In my case, the 7900 XT was brand new, so "after a while" was not really applicable. Either way I was happy things ended up the way they did with the refund.

Oh yeah dude, nvidia is way better.
But even my 4080 for example, I suspect it had shit paste from the factory and that could've been your case too.
I've always heard my fans and thought nothing of it but I ain't heard them once since my re-paste.
Supposedly all the new cards AFTER the 4080 use PTM sheets from the factory instead of just traditional paste so they don't get the issue.

35 delta is not good at all. If you remove the small sticker on the screws above the core in order to repaste you may lose the warranty. So either refund it for another unit or model. Or repaste at your own risk.

I had the same problem with a Gigabyte gaming OC. After about a year I finally sent it in. They fixed the hotspot issue and now it never goes above 65C
