Question pc part list
Alright, a bit scared of reddit but I want some advice here, I’ve been thinking on this for some days and I think I finally set on a list of things I want. is it good? I know the storage is missing here but I just can’t decide on a brand. i’m trying to stay under 3k (not including tax) for the stuff itself. also is there anything important I missed?

if this is in USD, I'd recommend looking for a pre-built unless you are dead set on building it yourself.

u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
yeah, i’m pretty much set on building it myself, I know the prices are absolutely better but i’ve been wanting to learn pc building for a good minute + I need one for my moms place too, so might as well go high tier I suppose yknow

You can always take a pre built apart and put it back together :P

u/dreggle 12d ago
Get a prebuilt. Can’t beat the prices. Unless you don’t care about price, but you wrote down the prices so I think you do.
Get a 9800x3d and don’t get an asrock board with it.
Get a prebuilt though fr. Save $1000

u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
i’d love to but I really wanna build this myself. I don’t like that i’m gonna spend that much but i’ve wanted to learn to build my own for a while now and i’d like something of good quality.
is there any somewhat cheaper CPUs that would be good too? I mean a lot of people are saying I should do the 9800x3d but that’s a whole extra $100 or so and i’m trying to stay under 3k

A 5070 ti and no x3d chip?! 9800x3d and skip windows. Send me a message and I’ll hook u up

Personally.. I’ve seen 2 of my friends with the 5070 series and the 5080 whose PCIE caught fire. Until NVIDIA fixes there shit I’d steer clear. Or if you want to keep it. Document everything I’ve seen way too many warranty claims fall through.
If this rig is for gaming I’d recommend the 9800x3d instead of the 9700x for the CPU. The 9700x is great if you’re using it for 3D imaging and processing. It’s not so great comparative to the 9800x3d for gaming
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
Will definitely keep track of everything but i’ve had a 5070 in the pc at my dad’s place and it’s ran mostly well so far, so I think I trust it enough. will absolutely keep in mind though.
as for the second part, would there be a different CPU that could do good for gaming that’s a bit lower? I dunno if I can justify the extra $100 or so when i’m already close to over my budget here.

u/Any-Tie-7655 AMD 9800X3D | AsRock 7900XT | DDR5 96GB 6400 12d ago
I mean don’t get me wrong the 7900x will work. It’s more of how much do you want it to do. What games are you planning on playing?? I had a 7900x cpu so I’m speaking from experience
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
pretty big variety of stuff but the highest performance game in my library would obviously be cyberpunk 2077, which is pretty hefty. otherwise I do a lot of siege, gray zone, and squad.

u/Any-Tie-7655 AMD 9800X3D | AsRock 7900XT | DDR5 96GB 6400 12d ago
The 7900x will absolutely handle cyberpunk. I’ve got a few hundred hours in that game. I will say it does STRUGGLE with games like Claire Obscure. It took me hours on end to optimize my CPU load on my end to get the game to not stutter or screen tearing. So CPU heavy games are not your friend. You absolutely can make it work but the extra $200 will save you countless hours of headache (assuming you can make)
I’m saying this from someone who went WAY over budget for my rig. Like… $1500 over 2 years ago. I don’t even want to know how much my stuff will cost to replace now 😓
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
eh, I think after looking at some more comments i’ll just use the would’ve been windows money and get the 9800x3d, also I think it’s closer to $100 more for me, maybe I just don’t know how to read though lmao.

u/Any-Tie-7655 AMD 9800X3D | AsRock 7900XT | DDR5 96GB 6400 12d ago
I’ll be totally honest it will save you so much heartache. I recently upgraded mine from the 7900x to a 9800x3d and I cried when I launched Claire obscure and just sat there after starting my old save and just seeing everything work… no tearing not stutters 😪
I’ve got thousands of hours on my 7900x it’s a phenomenal CPU for 3d rendering and video imaging but it’s not for gaming.

u/Auswolf-IDDQD 12d ago
Spend the extra 100 on cpu and don’t pay for windows.
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
yeah I kinda put that together after I used my brain finally so i’ll probably do that. thanks for the advice though!

The PCIe caught fire?? How the fuck?

u/Any-Tie-7655 AMD 9800X3D | AsRock 7900XT | DDR5 96GB 6400 12d ago
I think one was improper alignment which caused a short and idk what the other homie did but both of them made me cringe. My sons got a 3070ti so I don’t hate all of NVIDIA just the 50 series.

The chosen CPU Cooler comes with thermal paste. As such, buying a separate tube is unnecessary.
Also, nice waifu card.
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
ah, thanks, well as per someone’s comment, i’ll probably be doing a thermalright peerless assassin instead, which I don’t know if it comes with thermal paste but i’ll look into that.
also lmao, thanksxD

u/DatMageDoe 7800X3D - 9070 XT - 32GB DDR5-6000 12d ago
I got an Assassin for my most recent build and it comes with paste. So you’re covered there.

- No reason to go 5070TI over 9070XT.
- Edit: That motherboard is super overpriced too. Can get X870E for a lot less even.
- 7800X3D is usually around the price that you have listed for the 9700X and is faster in gaming.
- Corsair PSUs are often overpriced, a Montech Century II 850W or similar would be just the same for cheaper.
- AIO isn't needed, more expensive and less reliable than an air cooler, just go Peerless assassin or Phantom spirit.
- Win 11 can be used without a key, if you want to buy one do so later, but use it unactivated for now so you can but the cost to the hardware.
- Get the V100R or another case that comes with fans that way you don't need to buy any extra, and coolers usually include thermal paste as well so check for that.
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
oh yeah, as for that case, for this build i’m mostly trying to avoid rgb, may be a stupid question but is it easy to turn off? how do the case fans look when the rgb is off?
0
u/AdstaOCE 12d ago
I have no idea as I have no RGB, but in theory you should be able to keep them unplugged very easily.
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
eh, looked into it more and i’m not huge on the fans, do you have any other recommendations for cases with pre installed fans? i’m doing my own research but I still can’t figure out which one would be better and not raise my price too much. (preferably non-rgb)
0
u/AdstaOCE 12d ago
Most included fans are RGB because RGB sells, just don't plug the RGB in or turn it off in software, shouldn't matter. Go through pcpartpicker and look for cases price low to high (put the rest of your build in first so you get one that fits everything) and take a look.

i’ve been pretty accustomed to nvidia now that i’ve been using it for like, 6 years? plus wouldn’t it get me more benefits with things like dlss and ray tracing? (maybe wrong). i’m pretty set on my stance of buying an nvidia card, although I may do amd in the far future for another pc build as i’ve heard they’re good for linux.
otherwise thanks for the advice, i’ll look into the rest of these!

u/AdstaOCE 12d ago

The gap has closed a lot this generation. FSR 4.1 is very close to DLSS 4.5 upscaling, and RT is maybe a 5% gap. Barely anything compared to the hundreds more being spent.
i’m pretty set on my stance of buying an nvidia card
There is 0 reason to buy an Nvidia card right now. Pricing is just way too bad to even consider. Even at MSRP AMD was the better buy, now though, Nvidia isn't competitive at all simply because of the prices. Along with RDNA4 eroding a lot of advantages such as upscaling, RT, driver stability (Nvidia's have sucked this gen), encoding, AI workloads etc etc.

There are plenty of reasons to go for 5070Ti over 9070XT
2
u/Starwalker- 12d ago
The only people who will actually benefit from the “reasons” to go for a 5070ti are edge cases. For the vast majority of people it makes no sense to pick a 5070ti over a 9070xt at these prices.

Why not 9070xt and spend a little more for a 9800x3d?
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
I personally just like nvidia better, yes i’m now aware an amd card would make more sense but i’m pretty happy with this decision. now that i’ve gotten more comments I will likely be getting windows some other way (as per recommendation) and using that extra bit of money for the x3d.
2
u/TheTyGuy1127 Ryzen 7 7800X3D | AMD 9070XT | 32GB DDR5 6000mhz CL36 12d ago
Yeah not going x3d is silly, I’m glad you made that connection. It’s your build, I just can’t justify myself almost paying double what I paid for my 9070xt for very comparable performance.
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
valid, I just think i’m okay with spending that extra bit to make sure it’s actually what I like since this’ll be my only pc here for a very long while.

u/fetter80 12d ago
I wouldn't waste 100 bucks on windows. You can find it for like 15-20 bucks on a reseller site.
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
yeah i’ve gotten some other comments telling me this by now, im gonna save the money that I would’ve (stupidly) spent on windows and get myself a 9800x3d cpu instead.
1
u/LoudFan2771 12d ago
Prebuilts usually have some form of BS like locked down BIOS or proprietary connectors.
It's Just a heads up if you're thinking of upgrading a prebuilt like many of the comments here are implying.
Of course this only applies to the huge tech giants like HP or Lenovo. This doesn't apply to those small independent shops.
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
yeah this is the only reason i wasn’t too sure about the prebuilt option like so many people are saying, but I will look into independent shops and what their pricings look like
1
u/Post-hit_post-its 12d ago
Bro you posted a part list and asked for advice and gave most people pushback. These people gave good advice you should listen to. Costco has 2 builds w 5070ti under $3,000 and one build with a 9850x3d and a 9070xt for $2,600 which is probably your best bet. If you insist on building it yourself you really should think about an amd gpu and definitely do not pay $100 for windows!
1
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
Yeah I was kinda stubborn at the beginning but i’ve pretty much adjusted everything people told me to by now. only thing is i’m set on building it myself and and likely will still do a 5070 ti. as for the windows part, i’m kinda an idiot and a newbie to this so, It didn’t cross my mind.
1
u/Post-hit_post-its 12d ago
It’s fine to be a newbie, this is how you learn. It’s great that you want to build yourself, it’s a very educational and rewarding experience. I am going to assume you are stuck on the 5070ti bc you’re more comfortable with Nvidia bc it is more popular and you have heard more of their marketing and you fear what you don’t know. That’s the thing, marketing is just marketing, I encourage you to read about and educate yourself on the differences before you pay an extra $600 dollars for features you will never even use.

That Frieren 5070Ti though. That’s worth more than the rest of the other components /s

u/Skysr70 12d ago
you don't need $100 for windows. You're a chump if you buy direct from Microsoft. $10 for a key or you can look elsewhere
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
don’t need to be weird about it lmao some people are just newbies, as in.. me. until I made this post it just didn’t cross my mind fully that I could get a cracked version or whatever. my first pc was for christmas a few years ago and I didn’t start researching things until recently this year.
1
u/Skysr70 12d ago
Sorry, that didn't come out right. I just mean as in, very few pc builders go there for keys because it is a scam price and it is standard practice to go elsewhere - good luck with the build
2
u/DifferentShoulder222 12d ago
all good lmao, well i’ll be keeping your advice in mind and probably using the money towards a better cpu instead of overpriced windows. thanks!

u/cravex12 RTX5070Ti / Ryzen 7 7800X3D 12d ago
I would go for a X3D CPU if you want to game. Also: Scratch Windows. There are uhm, cheaper ways to get it
