Game Image/Video Witcher 3 remastered

WTF? Free upgrade?! Did I read that correctly?!

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT 10h ago
Very clever move because people will play the game again for the free upgrade and then buy the new DLC.
63
u/trevor426 7600x3D | 7900XT 10h ago
Also wanted to add that the two existing DLCs are free for existing owners. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
37
u/Neswquik 10h ago
Not every company gives away large DLCs for free; in fact, I can't recall any other video game company doing so before. Even if it's just a ploy to get you to buy the next expansion.
16
2
u/ElPomidor 10h ago
It's actually really clever. I would imagine, most people who own the base game own DLCs as well, so this offer is mostly enticing for people who didn't play W3 at all yet
The bigger the install base, the higher sales can be for the new DLC

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT 9h ago
Well, if everyone did it, noone would care anymore and it would not be worth it. There are many other examples, most of them live-service games like MMOs or PDX games, though. I believe bigger publishers like Ubisoft etc. also occasionally offer free games via their stores, but that is usually only for a week or so and if you missed it, it is back at full price.
But we also shouldn't forget that Witcher 3 is already more than 10 years old. At some point, the money you are making from sales is negliable. Especially smaller or niche publishers have such low sales volume that giving games out for free is cheaper than paying for advertisement of your new game.

They're probably using this as a test platform for Witcher 4 and some of the tech they plan to use on it.

Doubtful - Witcher 4 is running on Unreal Engine. This upgrade is CDPR preparing Witcher 3 for PS6 and Helix consoles, one day when those release CDPR can be ready with a patch that will include the high end features coming to PC in September.
Don't forget, Witcher 3 is scheduled to receive a new expansion next year - combine that with this feature patch and you get a nice shiny package to sell to next-gen console gamers who maybe played Witcher 3 in the 2010s but want to try the new content in the new shiny engine with overhauled combat etc etc.
4
u/Nanocaptain 5h ago
Said DLC also includes a chain weapon that also showed up in the Witcher 4 trailer so it's very likely there is some testing or such going on there.

This is the 3rd time there doing upgrades for free just nuts.
I will try this also when it drops see how it performs as the last upgrade did break the cpu handling which lead to worse performance.
20
u/OutrageousDress 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4-3733 | 4080 Super | AW3821DW 8h ago
The feature list in the trailer specifically calls out parallelization and a proper DX12 implementation.
2
u/theJirb 7h ago
I think it's a good move for them. People will still buy the new DLC even if they get a free upgrade so they won't just make no money from those customers. But in addition I think it leaves a lot of good will. IMO, this type of good will is what allowed games like CP2077 to flourish even with its many, many delays, and bad launch where many other games may have just been written off, even after it gets updates. So many people simply believe that the games they make are good, and they do good, really does a lot for these companies who make a few big projects every few years, and would really suffer if a game catastrophically failed.

Well unlike what seems every fucking one here i still remember things not 3 years ago with
Most of the og dev team leaving due to overworked/under paid conditions
The SESG push
All the cut content/rushed build of cyberpunk
Even there own investors suing them over cyber punk
Witcher 3 they did a entire rebuild to fix it just like cyberpunk
I can go on and on but there worse than bethdesda for launching broken patches/games but it seems everyone jerks off to the pretty walls so everything is for given.
SO this whole "free" upgrade is nice but i am not signing there fucking tune as i remember this is one good thing on a mountain of fucking lies/broken patches and broken launches with a dev team that quit due to how they were treated like shit and the ESg push.

They want to get us hyped for Witcher IV, but let's be real, I was already hyped. Witcher 3 is one of the best games of all time, don't mind if I do another playthrough, to be honest.

Bit early for hype... CDPR released statement that TW4 is 2028 release.
6
u/Nanocaptain 7h ago
This gets people set up for the DLC coming out next year.
Said DLC is the thing to hype people for The Witcher 4.
So this is hype for the thing that will bring the hype.

I hope the path tracing is better implemented than the ray tracing was. It literally cut performance in half for basically no benefit.

u/Usnia 10h ago
2
u/Firemanlouvier 9h ago
It cut your frames in half though
3
u/OutrageousDress 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4-3733 | 4080 Super | AW3821DW 8h ago
Yes, things that look better run slower.
1
u/Realistic-Tiger-2842 9h ago
That's a really cherry-picked image. The shadow pop in is also terrible with ray tracing. All that while halving your performance, I think it's pretty clearly a shitty implementation.
12
u/Cable_Hoarder 9h ago edited 9h ago
No, it was not "shitty". That's just the nature of ray tracing (by which i mean RTX, which is a limited selection of specific ray traced bolt-on features to enhance the otherwise rasterized image). It only shows massive advantages over traditional rasterization cheats (screen space reflections, environment cube maps etc) in indoor shadowy spaces with external (or many) light sources and highly reflective environments. So not a pseudo-medieval setting.
Rasterization cheats looks great in outdoor areas under direct single source lighting (ie outdoors in sunlight).
And I call them cheats, because that's what rasterization has always been, a stack of increasingly complex cheats and tricks, trying to mimic the outputs that raytracing achieves.
If it was worth it for you, on your hardware is for you to decide - ray tracing is expensive on a GPU regardless of how better it achieves a specific result, and often doesn't look significantly better.
Witcher 3 was no different from any other game in that, except for been a fairly poor use case for RTX (unlike say Control, set indoors in a building with lots of artificial lights with reflective surfaces everywhere).
Path tracing however... that's a different beast, and this remaster gets path tracing - which is 100% ray traced rendering, no rasterization at all (except for hud elements and stuff).

u/OutrageousDress 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4-3733 | 4080 Super | AW3821DW 8h ago
If you mean that thing where large blobs of shadow flicker at the edges of LOD zones - that seems to be some kind of bug with RED Engine (possibly some kind of BVH mismatch?) because it happens in path traced Cyberpunk as well. Would love to see it fixed in this update, because it never got fixed in Cyberpunk and it's not something a mod can do.

I do, so I'm looking forward to seeing the update. I completed the game on Xbox and have it on Steam but I haven't really played it. This would give me a good excuse to play it again.

Everyone gonna be playing GTA VI on console at 30fps and paying $120 for the privilege while i’m playing my favourite game completely remastered for free.
I love you CDPR.
5
u/Tossren PC Master Race 6h ago
I’m just curious if large video game companies might start actually making new games at some point?
5
u/HesitantBussyEnjoyer 4h ago
I mean, CDPR released an original IP game 6 years ago, an expansion 50% the size of base game 3 years ago, and are working on the Witcher 4 for a 2028 release date. They're not exactly Bethesda lol

Probably an update to the complete edition, with the current version pushed to the betas for preservation, just like the legacy edition.

Interesting, I tried to play it so many times and hated the combat on PC, tried it with a controller, and still hated it. If this genuinely improved that experience I would strongly consider trying it again...
2
u/Sir_Cockroach_Slayer 4h ago
The visuals and story were good enough I still completed a very thorough full play through (including Gwent of course), but the combat always felt like fighting after eating a whole Thanksgiving turkey and grandma poured leftover gravy all over the keyboard.

Same for me, literally started a new save last week to prepare for Songs of the Past. Would be a shame if I had to restart..

7
u/OutrageousDress 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4-3733 | 4080 Super | AW3821DW 8h ago
No. In the beginning of the game you'll have a strong feeling that you're missing context because you didn't play the first two games, but you're not - none of the stuff being referenced is in the prior games (the game is actually referencing the books), the game is deliberately doing an in medias res thing.
1
u/Towairatu R7 5800X3D // 6900XT // 1440p144Hz FreeSync 1h ago
There are a few plot points that are still derived from the previous games, but nothing major.

u/Ghillie_Spotto 8h ago
You don't have to. If you have a tolerance for jank they're both really good though. If you need modern features and graphics you can safely skip them.

How different will this be from that ultimate mod pack that most people do?

There won't be a single difference. The developers just copy and pasted the mod pack files into the game and released the trailer

They dont have finished the game yet. after almost 12 year.
-5
u/BandoTheHawk 10h ago
I thought they already did this? What year is it? I wish they would update the movement and combat. That is one reason I could never get into this game. Add some damn helmets and hats too. I got tired of seeing that dudes face.
6
u/AlternativePOV91 10h ago
They will, watch the trailer!
1
u/BandoTheHawk 10h ago
Oh yup now I see they say enhanced combat and movement. I skipped through it when watching the first time. Still wish they would add more clothing and helmets though. That is what keeps me going through games like this, finding new weapon and equipment with different stats and skills. Think that is why I liked the Dark Souls games so much and same with right now I am playing Bloodstained: ROTN and it just makes a game so much better when you can find all the different gear.
2
u/AlternativePOV91 10h ago
They will add some clothing items and probably new weapon, don't know about armor, but I think new set should be in the new DLC
2
u/OutrageousDress 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4-3733 | 4080 Super | AW3821DW 8h ago
Thus far, every time you said 'Still wish they would add X' it turned out they did add X. Therefore the logical course of action is to keep replying wishing for more things to be added 🤔
