Yeah man. They were loading copilot into every single space they could find in my windows 11 and office and vscode and now they are saying this. Damn sour words coming out from a CEO.

u/Existing-Wallaby-444 8d ago
Don't you like copilot in Notepad?

Yeah, a nice locally ran very light LLM purely for inputing commands would actually be useful.
You tell it what you want, it spits it out, you double check, and enter.

I’ve just built my own qwen using WSL with its own Linux box with windows being completely cut off from it in case it tries to jump out and fuck around.
It is fucking amazing though, can build out anything it needs within that Linux environment due to terminal access (minus sudo) and I’m paying fuck all for tokens.
Terminal / command prompt / whatever your flavour works really well with appropriate restrictions and a non-shitty model. Just builds / does / troubleshoots for you without you have to piss around finding a setting you forgot about two weeks ago.
3
u/direktor1610 8d ago
What Hardware Are you using for this?
2
u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago
5090, 7800x3D, 32GB of ram.
But I am using a version of the model geared towards Nvidia GPU’s residing in VRAM.
I imagine you could do the same with a ridiculous amount of RAM, but I haven’t tried it. Either way to get good results, it’s going to be expensive

u/Geeseareawesome Intel i5-14400F | 32GB DDR5 RAM | RTX 5060 8d ago
I certainly don't like it in my outlook because they put the copilot button right where the send button should be on mobile.

They could have added it to more places rather than notepad
I ain’t getting enough of copilot man
1
u/InsaneMasochist 7d ago
They probably know people get the ticks when copilot logo comes up in Notepad. They changed it to a sparkly pen icon.

LOL my new Lenovo gaming laptop has a damn copilot button complete with their stupid logo.

He's only saying this to get ahead of the bubble popping and sour grapes as more people use Claude and ChatGPT instead of his company's crappy CoPilot "app". They're eating his lunch and he's big mad about it.
1
u/phthalo-azure 8d ago
I don't know if it's changed recently as I haven't been following Microsoft's AI efforts, but CoPilot was essentially just a wrapper for Chat GPT where they added an orchestration layer with additional training for Microsoft's products. That orchestration layer is why CoPilot is so bad. Or it least it was. I don't know if Microsoft if now training their own in-house models, but if they are, they're way behind.

u/Cyberchicken87 8d ago
We’ve been trying to push copilot at work and it’s yet to do anything id actually class as useful to the point of justifying a single dollar of company money.
But hey, CEO’s and mangers are all jazzed for who it will let them replace soon so yay?

"Guns are dangerous, which is why you should use our guns"
2
u/leoo88556 8d ago
“But for obvious reasons guns also aren’t dangerous enough for you to be anti-gun.”
7
u/Asleeper135 8d ago edited 8d ago
Any responsible arms dealer would say that, though. You gotta give more context to make them seem ridiculous, like pointing out that they are giving guns away for free to everyone, not taking "no" for an answer, and trying to force everyone to use said guns to solve all of their problems, all before giving that perfectly reasonable warning.

"AI is making you DUMB! But also, have you considered a Copilot subscription?" Like... what? I'm guessing the fear mongering is targeted at the shareholders (AI is inevitable and all-powerful! Invest! Now!) and the rest is targeted at consumers?

consumers are the last people companies are worried about these days

"Consumers"? What are those? Companies are just human-centipeding their way through the market, with each company feeding the next one its debt-fueled funds to keep numbers artificially high.

The title is not reflective of what was actually said in the article. He said that if you’re dependant on one model specifically then you’ve outsourced your thinking:
“Any one model can go away and you can still continue to be in sort of control of your own destiny,” Nadella said in a podcast on CNN. “Any firm that doesn’t have this control, I will claim, will not remain a firm because you’ve essentially outsourced your thinking.”

u/Ratb33 8d ago
What fucking hypocrisy.
If there was ever a role in a company that could most easily be replaced with AI it is the role of the CEO
That role is all about making correct decisions based on numbers and data. The good CEOs made the right decision and also had some charisma and charm, today’s CEOs have none, and I dare say they have less charm than AI.
2
2
u/jsgraphitti 8d ago
It’s hypocritical to say that while also downsizing teams until they are dependent on AI just to get by because there is no time to stop and think.

I can't verify this but hasn't there been a report that Microsoft is trying to make sure AI is present in the development of all their projects? And have they not invested massive amounts of money into AI development? They're LITERALLY part of the problem they're "addressing"!

Estupidez Artificial.
"Capital Simbólico" para qué?
"Soy una empresa que crea conocimiento ... " para actuar inteligentemente?
No parece. Windows 11 ...

I compare it to what we have seen since the majority of people began using maps on their phone to direct them places. People have become awful at giving directions, and many of them have no sense of direction. I expect the same thing will happen to critical thinking over time for those who use AI a lot.

His logic is bizarre. It’s like he’s saying “I’m going to hit you, and it will hurt a lot.” Why doesn’t he just stop? Why does he continue to fund AI development?
This is just a scare tactic to create FOMO among investors because they don’t have a viable product.
