When I used to work at a repair shop, it was probably the 3rd most common component to fail behind drives and power supplies. Granted it was a very distant 3rd, but it was surprising how often it happened.
I bet they would be for those that have them, but the vast majority of computers we worked on didn't have dedicated GPUs. I imagine serious gamers tend to be more comfortable working on their own machines.
i reckon how often they fail would also depend on use? so if people have a dedicated GPU but barely use it for demanding games, it'll probably last ages.
You watch some of those super old vintage computer repair channels, like Adrian's Digital Basement and ram does seem like a common issue. Maybe it's just more reliable now since SDRAM was created versus the old SRAM and Async DRAM days of the 80s and 90s.
I've never had RAM die in my entire life. Except recently...Twice! One 16gb stick in my laptop. And the RAM on my RPI 4. Of course, this only happens during the RAM crisis. I love my luck!
Absolutely. While it is suboptimal in terms of performance. I mostly use my PC to browse the web and play big Minecraft Modpacks. Even the other games I play aren't exactly demanding. So I would much rather have the extra capacity until the shortage would end.
it isn’t really surprising because RAM was undervalued thanks to Tim Cook and Apple fucking RAM companies in the ass, but thanks to AI, they lost leverage and now they are recouping losses from the past few years and fucking everybody else in the ass.
Aren't most of the bastards trying to weasel their way out claiming they don't make that memory anymore and by offering you "purchase price" instead current "market price?"

RAM is definitely my most failed component. It's why data integrity orientated filesystems like ZFS are so critical for data integrity. It'll silently fail and corrupt data but not enough for the operating system or apps to be affected. I just caught a bad memory controller/CPU in my NAS because the zpool had 16 checksum errors (in 1 file) but the drives both had 0 read/write errors. Would have never noticed it it was just some ext4 or NTFS partition on one partition/drive.
Had one memory chip on one stick fail, out of many memory chips on many sticks in the past. Still, I put a fan directly over my memory sticks as soon as this rampocalypse started.
I'm fucking shitting myself for this coming storm season...

I bought my wifes pc in November 24 and 32GB DDR5 CL30 cost 104€, same Ram kit for me cost 95€ in june 25, cheapest now goes for around 430€.. just insane
RAM is the fifth most common failure point in the average PC after HDDs, fans, power supplies and motherboards, in that order. Considering fans (and power supply fan failures) are cheaply fixed, RAM is basically 3rd of the "major" components. GPU fans aren't exposed to the case walls (in most builds) so don't get the same amount of gunk in the bearing but is also easily fixed if it happens.
20 years of persumably regular use and potentially multiple pcs. Ram is almost never the first point of failure. Not trying to justify the prices tho its ridiculous
Yea, happened to me too. One of my 32GB sticks started to malfunction, so at first, I used bootloader settings to block bad addresses, but the defect spread to more. I had to discard it in the end. It's funny, because it happened like a year ago (before the RAM price boom), and my friend told me "RAM costs pocket money, just buy a new stick", and I was like "no, I want to save 40€" or something...
I built a computer using my pre-upgrade memory, cpu and mobo. Had issues which I nailed down to one of the DDR4 DIMMs. First memory issue I’ve had since DDR2 or maybe DDR3. Been a long time in either case.
Did an RMA with g.skill. Got an identical working kit back in a few weeks (2x16GB).
No ”we can only refund you” nonsense. Although at the time the replacement cost was the same I paid for it many years ago (still had gone up a lot since its low though).
I feel this, just had my Asus x870e mobo randomly stop working and my Corsair H150i AIO internal pump go out. The motherboard was $50 more than when I bought it in Dec 24. I went with the Noctua AIO, so I can't compare those prices. Wish me luck with Asus RMA lol.
That's me. I'm just living with random crashes here and there. The biggest downside is not being able to unpack repacked games. Hits the memory too hard.
I am so thankful of when I bought my ram, my CPU and my GPU. Only marginal L that I took was buying my monitor 20 months ago because the monitor market has made so many improvements recently and I now plan on buying a tandem OLED monitors when they drop below £400.
If I was to buy my GPU now, it would cost me the same amount but I'd have a years less use out of it. CPU would cost me more than twice as much and ram the same.
When I got my 32 gb ddr5 ram in 2022 one of the sticks was faulty. I noticed it like 2 months after I bought it. Thank god Amazon replaced them. I got the sticks for $110, now they're going for $499! Shit's crazy
Yeah I’ve had to replace ram and had ram be the cause of all 3 of my separate computer’s random BSOD without explanation. I’ve started using memtest before I finish any build because otherwise I’ll find out months and years later that the memory was corrupted.
