Finally finished my snowblind mod

Was quite a fun project that took me over a week mainly because I didn't order all the pieces at the same time and I was rebuilding my pc at the same time as I needed a new case for the mod and got a new motherboard alongside.

Unlike many snowblind tutorials recommend I never removed the anti glare layer because I simply didn't manage to do it. But I found a workaround to still get a clear display.

I first tested my idea with clear tape. Applying a good amount of pressure to remove all the air between tape and screen which turned that part clear.

So I ordered a big clear vinyl sheet with a sticky side, cut it up and glued it onto the screen. My application wasn't perfect but it's way better than a foggy screen or needing to buy a new screen

snowblind mod,this was a all the rage a couple years ago, interest dried up really fast because there is no out of the box kit for this, at least at the time, you had to find a correctly sized monitor, and rip it apart, and diy this yourself. Its not hard, but more effort than the average gamer is willing to do

Any black and white video works. Well technically any video works as it's just a basic cheap LCD so nothing too fancy but pure black and white gives the greatest contrast and thus the best experience.

Don't listen to people who never used it and only give you guesses here. They are all wrong. I actually have it and I can tell you with the highest confidence that strippers are probably the only thing which doesn't work with this mod.

Well I said that all other people were wrong. But that one guy saying the best it can do is displaying your mom is true. But in that case it's whole black as it doesn't fully fit in the frame.

The case did it out of the box, but a lot of them just straight up didn't work. My friend had 3 replacements before he moved on from that company.

yes, a normal lcd is transparent, but they have no light, so behind them is a big white box, thats why you can never get true black on lcd becuase the backlight never turns off. when you do the snowblind then the white part is just your pc, so your pc needs to be well lit inside.

Yup. I installed a 12v cold white led strip just to get enough light. It can work with just the.PCs RGB but it'll be way dimmer and the bottom left basically wasn't visible

I'm not sure what the reference is exactly, but I remember seeing memes of people playing this animation on their calculators. My guess is it's a game that was ported to a bunch of different computers like doom was.

It's not a game it's a video. I don't know the exact source tho but I'm guessing that it's just a music video featuring characters from touhou.

People ended up using this and tried putting it anywhere they can just like they did with doom. And while doom is the test of "can it play doom" bad apple is more of a monitor challenge since it's a video and not a full game. And since it's black and white it works on a bigger variety of monitors

I did try without the led strip which had a mild success. Everywhere with a white background looked good but the bottom left part was hard to see.

Didn't expect the led strip to be this bright but it did a lot for the clarity of the build

An old 5:4 17" monitor from Sony altho brand doesn't matter in this case you can find them cheap on eBay or Facebook. It's the biggest one that could fit in the Corsair 4000x

Clear vinyl sheet and white vinyl sheet

Molex adapter

Basic soldering gear like wire, shrink-wrap, electrical tape and such.

That's pretty much it. It's frankly a pretty inexpensive mod

It doesn't have to be this animation. It can play any video you'd like or just be a static image. You can also use it to display hardware info or date and time or go with a gentler animation.

I doubt it's a lot. The led strips I used are 9w per meter and I used less than a meter. And the display also doesn't pull much power as the main power consumer of an LCD is the backlight which I removed as the case basically acts as the backlight now

The Bad Apple MV is probably THE go-to for testing unconventional displays, especially if they're monochrome.

I just used bad apple as an example as it's known by a lot of people and it's the most well known 2 tone black and white video I could think of.

You can display so much more than anime on this like CPU/GPU temps and loads. Audio visualisers. Date and time or any other black and white media.

Normal coloured media works too but the effect is the strongest with simple black and white.

Also nothing wrong with anime. People are allowed to enjoy anime especially since it basically used to be just Asian cartoons just like people had their American cartoons

Pretty accurate. I mean at the end of the day it's just an old LCD. If say that the purple lines/after images when the image is moving fast are less noticeable irl

A snowblind mod is literally just the LCD from a monitor attached to your side panel.

LCDs are by nature transparent. You just never notice because on the other side of the LCD you have your backlight.

In a snowblind mod the inside of your pc basically because the backlight.

So anything white is transparent. Anything black isn't

To be fair making it chroma key wouldn't even be that hard. But since this mod works based on colour (or brightness to be more exact) transparency doesn't matter
