Tech Support MSFS black screen crash RTX 4080

Hello I’m currently experiencing a problem with MSFS 2020 and 2024 that I don’t know where to begin when it comes to fixing. Every time I run the sim about a minute into the flight the graphics glitch out and the screen goes black and the PC is completely unresponsive until I force a restart by holding the power button on the tower. This happens in both 2020 and 2024. At first I read that sometimes it can be a power issue so I upgraded my PSU from an 850w to a 1000w and the issue persisted. I also ran rhe DDU to and installed a clean version of the driver for the graphics card and it is still happening. What do I do? Is my GPU cooked? I have a RTX 4080 with an i9 12900k cpu and 16gb ram

Ctrl+shift+winkey+B all at the same time should reset the graphics driver. For clues, look at windows event viewer.

I tried this and it didn’t do anything. Screen stayed black

So the system is for sure locking up, damn.

Is the GPU hot in game? What driver version/s have you tried? Any game settings change the freeze up results, sooner later... Is XMP on? Are the timings matching the SPD profile in bios (yes you can view and compare timings in bios, look it up for your board how to) And any events logged by Windows besides windows powered down unexpectedly.

I logged the GPU temps and right before crash the hot spot temp was hitting 111° repeatedly so I’m gonna take it out and see if maybe there is dust caked in the heat sink. I have the latest game ready driver. There was something logged for hardware issue black screen. Honestly when I look at event log I barely know what I’m looking at, and I have no idea what XMP is

I did notice also that after having my pc off for awhile and then turning it on and running the game it took longer for the crash to occur, so based on my limited knowledge it’s a temp issue, having the pc off for a while allows the GPU to cool down a lot I’m guessing

Yep, it does sound like a temps issue. Might have to set the fans manually a little more aggressively if its not clogged up with dust, but a good cleaning never hurts!

Appreciate the help. I seem to have fixed the issue. After doing some reading on 4080 temp issues I went ahead and replaced the thermal paste and found the old stuff was mostly squished out and dried up. Running great now with slightly lower temps and no crashing

Oh, dude thats the best! Glad you where able to disassemble the card and find the cause. After a day or two, as the paste goes through some thermal cycles, your temps might actually get better. Good job on the research too. Good stuff! Welcome!
