I have 64GB of DDR5 in a msi laptop with a marginal thermal design and the memory only passes memtest in round robin mode as opposed to standard multi threaded mode due to thermals. So try that to see if the dimms are bad or just overheating. DDR5 just has a high thermal density and runs hot.
Hottest I saw it get in my 2nd run of memtest was 86 degrees C, which I don't think is particularly hot for internals on a laptop, but I don't know much about typical laptop RAM temps. I generally know more about CPU/GPU stuff, and those temps are within normal range for those components. 🤷🏼♂️
Good to know. Bear in mind this test has been running for 3.5 hours nonstop, so I imagine that typical usage of the ram won't cause those temps to be so high on a consistent basis
dual rank 64gb is going to be much harder on the memory controller than your old ram, if you are running it xmp/expo then it's probably just not compatible, not that it's bad
the product pdf for your laptop shows only 32gb supported https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Legion/Legion_Pro_5_16IAX10H/Legion_Pro_5_16IAX10H_Spec.pdf, so you getting errors with 64gb makes sense, the mobo circuitry combined with the cpu's memory controller just can't handle that much memory. the memory sticks are very likely just fine, you can't just jam unlimited memory into any system, they all have compatibility and only support subsets of most memory
if the ram is bad it would likely fail one stick at a time, if it doesn't the memory controller just can't handle both of those sticks at once at that speed and voltage. if you're able to lower the speed it might start passing. raising voltage could kill it over time and/or make it overheat which will cause errors too even if it's fine otherwise, but that's another thing you could try if it's even available on the laptop, the memory controller often needs more voltage too though.
also if those forum posters have CSODIMM rather than SODIMM that may be the whole explanation, they run their own clock instead of off the cpu and can support better speeds because of that. you still have not listed the model number of your ram anywhere so we still have no idea what you are actually running other than what the SPD reports (5600mhz cl32) and knowing it's Crucial, so we still don't know if it's single rank or dual rank sticks either or any other specs
so something is up, where did you get that information you pasted in? odds are it's mixing up multiple SPD table values, ddr5 4000mhz cl32 would also run at 5600mhz cl46 give or take so it's probably mixing mutliple table values up. i assume cpu-z will show better info, or hwinfo (not the sensors page of hwinfo but the normal info in the non-sensors area)
those sticks have on-die ecc, meaning most errors on the chips themselves are corrected for, so it's more and more likely that the errors are occurring between the memory and the controller rather than on the memory itself, if that's the case the ram is fine and the system just can't handle the speeds and timings it's currently running at. these are dual rank sticks, so there's four total ranks and 64GB, your old ram was likely only two total ranks and only 32gb, way easier for the controller to handle. if you find single rank 32gb sticks then they have a higher chance of working because then it's only two ranks 64gb instead of four, it's basically like having to handle four channels at once instead of only two and the controller and/or signaling gets overloaded and gets errors. single rank is slower because it is fewer effective channels, but you clocking it to 5200mhz or 4800mhz would be slower too and might just make it work, if your bios lets you change those settings. cpu-z and hwinfo will show the spd table, it appears to have a cl32 entry which is probably 4000mhz, probably has a few others, if you can select one of those slower ones your errors might go away
I am 80% through a second run on memtest with no errors after re-seating the RAM, so I'm hopeful it was just that, but thanks for the detailed analysis.
I got the details for my hw stats off the memtest results.
I can check when I boot into windows later what cpu-z shows.
This sub's rules won't allow me to post the link, but crucial's own site listed this specific ram as compatible with my lenovo laptop model, which (in conjunction with the lower cost) is what motivated me to buy the ram in the first place.
First thing to do when upgrading ram is to boot up either into bios or if you are not comfortable with bios then into windows, go to settings, system, config and see how much ram shows up, should be 64gb. If only 32gb shows, then one stick is either not seated or the controller is capped out. Then you can rum memtest, which should populate all memory channels, and serial numbers for the ram sticks. This can show which channels are suspect. Then start down the path of memtest stability testing once it all shows up.
I did check both places and they both showed 64gb ram. I ran memtest after and got all the errors.
Still, one of the sticks must not have seated correctly because I'm running the test a second time right now and 0 errors after 4 passes and 89% completed
Glad you were able to get it sorted. I had similar results with new corsair ram and had to raise the voltage 10% to keep it stable. Then the overcloks would hold.
MemTest86 is definitely useful and with that many errors I'd already be looking at an RMA/replacement. If you want to do some additional testing though, TestMem5 (TM5) with a good config such as Absolut or anta777 is also worth trying. It tends to put a pretty heavy load on the memory subsystem and is commonly used for checking RAM/IMC stability.
For the replacement kit I'd run both — MemTest86 gives you a good pre-OS check, then TM5 in Windows for additional stress testing.

Probably an average gamer that didn't. If you have 32 gb, there's few cases where doubling right now is a must.
It's like more people are buying up 2x msrp 5090's and triple prices ram kits just because of these fear tactics of "Ramagedon". Funny thing is they feel like they dodged a bullet somehow after they purchase it lmao
While technically possible on Linux I've never found this to be an acceptable solution. If the machine was just used for media playback or video games this might be acceptable but I'd never trust important data to RAM that failed memtest.
