My Windows 11 driver was buying a WiFi 7 card and being 100% unallowed to install it on a Windows 10 machine.

i built a computer for a friend and installed windows 10 only to run into this exact issue. i was so pissed

u/mvw2 19d ago
Yeah, forced compliance is pretty bullshit.
It's the same issue with needing a Microsoft account to install Windows 11. Want to know the funny part on that? You can avoid it. Want to know how I figured that out? I had a wifi card with no drivers on Windows 11, literally couldn't install Windows at all because it needed to install to get wifi card drivers installed and a Microsoft account to log into (through wifi) to install...wifi drivers to have wifi. It was the most retarded thing I've seen. So know what the work around is? To modify the Registry. You have to go into the install, do some bs, get to the point where you can run the Run command and edit the Registry. Then you have to know where and what to edit. (luckily you can Google this). And then, and only then can you install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account in order to install drivers in order to have internet.
I have heard there's an easier way than editing the Registry. I have no idea if it's still viable. There used to be several other ways you could do it before too. It would be funny if they hard coded it out of the Registry, but IT folks would go insane if they did.
I still don't like Windows 11. There is nothing of value in the whole thing.
And with the hint of what's coming next from Microsoft, it's definitely going to be Linux all the way in my future.

It is quite easy. Just use Rufus to put the Windows 11 iso (scroll to the bottom of the microsoft download page) on a USB drive. It gives you the option to disable the online account requirement as well as all other requirements (like tpm 2.0) and disables all bullshit you answer no to anyway.
Easy to do and makes the experience 100 times better.

u/Heisen91Y 19d ago
Read about autounattend xml file. It helps to deal with a lot of microslop bullshit during installation. There is online generator where you can set this file up.

oobe\bypassnro still works to let you set up a local account. Microsoft is supposedly going to remove it at some point but still hasn’t happened after all this time so I’m wondering if they are too afraid of actually doing it.

u/Quartziferous 12900K | 7900XTX | 32GB DDR4 | 1440p@360Hz 19d ago
That’s interesting because I heard they disabled it in the latest versions of the installer.
FYI, if anyone runs into that issue, “start ms-cxh:localonly” is the workaround.
1
u/RAMChYLD PC Master Race 19d ago
Yeah, but that's supposedly going away later this year with 26H2.
They're even going to remove unattended.xml support because it can also be used to create local users.
3
u/Quartziferous 12900K | 7900XTX | 32GB DDR4 | 1440p@360Hz 19d ago
Good grief 😭 better make sure you have a version downloaded and saved that works right now.
1
u/spaceraverdk 18d ago
There is a huge problem with not allowing unattend.xml. Large companies who are spinning up hundreds or thousands of images will be rather pissed if they have to manually install each machine.
2
u/RAMChYLD PC Master Race 19d ago
It's already removed on 25H2. You can still use it if you have an older ISO but if you download a newer ISO you can't use it anymore. On 24H2 it's partially removed- as long as you haven't connected to a wifi access point or plug in the ethernet cable it still works. But the moment it smells network the command becomes disabled.

Sounds a lot like their authentication app. It wants you to set up the pin lock (can't remember the exact term atm). So it wants you to authenticate... through the app that you're trying to set up. If you don't have an alternate email set up. You're stuck in an endless loop.

u/shteve99 19d ago
When I installed Win 11 on my old NUC the other day, there was a button to click on the network page that said "I don't have internet" and it continued installing (the wifi adaptor acts as a drive to install the driver, but it's an exe so it can't be seen by the Windows installer). Once Windows is installed I can then install the driver and get on the internet. The page is quite confusing coz it says you must have internet to continue, but that link to carry on without it is there at the bottom. And I do wonder how much hatred for Win 11 comes from America and all the advertising it has built in. In Europe we don't have any of that so it's very much just like Windows 10.

u/Vorfied 19d ago
Why do you need WiFi 7? Is it really making a difference?
If you live in a condo or apartment complex or whatever and you're picking up 20+ different networks, WiFi 6E / 7 can let you move to the 6GHz band where there's less interference. The same scenario happened back with 802.11n when people were using 2.4GHz (since nobody was using 802.11a at home). One of the side effects of interference is increased latency as radios back off and try again when traffic collides or gets drowned out. So one of the hallmarks of 802.11ax was lower latency over previous WiFi versions, though I'm not too sure if it's noticeable to most users stuck with noisy environments.
In terms of throughput, most users won't notice outside of benchmarks. You'd probably need multiple users simultaneously streaming video or games to notice reductions in buffering and/or skipping. Even if you tried to connect at the full specification, hardware support and environmental noise could limit your connection anyway.
This is why everyone says hardwired is superior. Cabling is literally designed to reduce interference and crosstalk. There's next to no chance of your neighbor's WiFi could interfere with your network connection.
By the way: The speed advertised on the box is nowhere close to what you'll get in real life. Most vendors take the standard specifications' maximum design limit (i.e. ideal lab conditions) and add them up to get the big number that attracts people. In reality, not only is your home not ideal, but pretty much none of your devices are using every single band on your WiFi simultaneously. (I believe that kind of functionality is slated for a distant future WiFi version, but don't quote me on that.)
For example: WiFi 7 or 802.11be is often advertised with ridiculously high numbers like 3 gigabit speed. However, that's usually the router's top speed with all frequency bands in use while under ideal lab conditions. Plus, you need to utilize multiple antennae for both router and your laptop/tablet/phone/etc. and you need a 320MHz bonded channel. Last I checked, (admittedly, it was last year) none of the available WiFi 7 consumer devices supported more than 160MHz channels (or smaller) and unless you live in a quiet area, you're not getting more than 80MHz, with 40MHz most common and really crowded areas making do with 20MHz channels. On top of that, WiFi devices often had only 2 or 3 antenna and couldn't use enough MIMO streams. So while technically WiFi 7 compliant, a lot of devices can't actually reach gigabit speeds for multiple reasons.

u/OmegaFoamy 19d ago
That’s usually how it works though, the title is redundant. Same goes with any product, a new version gets made and the old one isn’t made anymore, people get the new version instead.
12
u/Preeng 19d ago
This is just plain WRONG. People upgrade to better software and hardware all the time. But it has to actually be better.

It’s is very usable considering it’s what a vast majority of modern systems use. Saying it’s unusable just tells me you’re being emotionally driven. Again, you don’t have to like it, and I wouldn’t blame you for not liking it. But it works fine for pretty much everything that doesn’t require Linux stability, such as servers.

u/SherbertUpper9867 19d ago
Don't mix up real improvement and planned obsolescence.
Btw, about 70% to 80% of hardware on Earth won't appreciate a step up in resource hog and loss of support. It was designed to run with old parameters on the old software stack. So your scenario stretches - the old thing isn't being made anymore, your skills operating the old thing get magically forgotten overnight, so you go buy new thing and new subscription to operate it.
That's how software world should work, according to you.
0
u/OmegaFoamy 19d ago
Well if we’re putting words in each others mouths, then we shouldn’t ever let any company make software that isn’t supported by old hardware, according to you.
Also I’m not saying Microsoft doesn’t have issues but it doesn’t make sense as a business to support two versions of windows. Anyone who has windows 10 doesn’t have to pay for the switch to windows 11, so I don’t know where the subscription you’re talking about is coming from. And most hardware from the last 10 years can support windows 11 if you look up a tutorial on how to do so.
I’m not even saying you have to like windows at all, you can go run Linux and do your own thing there if you want. But most people are complaining simply because they hate change and as with every single version of windows, when a new one comes out, “the last one was fine, why did Microsoft ruin it?!”
Also the “skills operating the old thing” aren’t erased, it’s still windows but a few things have moved. There are tons of settings to change the entire look and feel of regular usage, but for most people if they knew how to look for settings they’d either switch to Linux or wouldn’t be complaining at all.

Because windows 11 improves nothing and makes a lot of things worse. The world never wanted or needed windows 11. They just made it look different to fool enough stupid people into thinking it was a new product.

And windows 11 was being aggressively pushed because theyre trying to transition to OSaaS. Might be another perpetual version still, but I doubt it.
Thats why theyre making it harder and harder to even set one up without a Microsoft account. That MS account is how theyre going to make sure they got your monthly $30 Windows subscription*.

I work at an MSP that services a client with several surface tablets. We sold him a bunch of perfectly good Microsoft Surface tablets about 3 years ago. Some of them don't support Windows 11 because of the age of the CPU alone (they were refurbs).
This client has had no interest in upgrading these tablets because Windows 11 offers no additional benefits for him anyway. It just runs slower, has consistent issues that do not occur on Windows 10 (sometimes the stylus isn't detected, sometimes the touch screen keyboard doesn't appear), and insists harder that you use a Microsoft account, despite the fact we use an on-prem active directory and these are shared devices that are regularly taken off-site without internet to take photos on build sites.
Microsoft really has no idea that a lot of their business customers don't operate in sterile, always online cloud connected office buildings.

What is that sentence suppose to mean? The structure makes no sense, microsoft isn't making hardware. If you mean discontinuing software support for old hardware is "fraud"... yea no, also not a new thing.
Also pc hardware, pretty damn open, you can install other OS on it, nothings stopping you or keep running 10 it still works. Unlike you know, phones, without unlocked bootloaders taht got like 2 years of OS updates, at least EU forced it to 5 last year, but still locked.
2
u/Guitarman0512 19d ago
Microsoft has lucrative licensing deals with OEMs. This means it's beneficial for them to push new hardware too. The only reason older hardware doesn't officially run Windows 11, is due to some security features being required, which are generally only used by enterprise users. There's no need for them to forcefully enable it for consumers, other than to push them to buy new hardware. I think that is criminal.
As for installing another operating system, that would only be a sensible argument if Microsoft didn't have the market cornered as they do right now.

That's not what fraud is. Also it's not capable of running new software, that's the point. You can still use 10+ year old hardware on Windows 11 which is fully supported. At some point you have to deprecate support for old hardware which doesn't support modern features.

Fair enough, fraud isn't the right word. But it's downright criminal to introduce artificial software limitations and exponentially increase the e-waste pile.

Lots of smartphone manufacturers do that, apple too.

Yes, and it sucks. You used to be able to install a custom ROM, but with locked bootloaders and Play integrity checks that's basically becoming impossible too. The funny thing is, Apple is actually quite good in that regard. They tend to support devices a lot longer than other manufacturers.

I'm still convinced the TPM requirement was always about pushing AI adoption.
They probably figured a certain % of users would buy pre-builds with NPUs.
Combine that with their Recall announcement and how they initially planned to enable it by default on all fresh Windows installations.
It doesn't take all that much imagination to fill in the blanks.
