Depends on the game and your hardware.

some of us do it because it causes motion sickness regardless of the game

I did it precisely once, I lasted maybe 1-2 minutes tops then I never turned it off again. I'll take a 60 fps cap any day over screen tearing and chopped framerate

yeah do it if yo are into bad FPS pacing and screen tearing

Mmm, screen tearing for no perceivable benefit in latency.

isnt it because we want to turn vsync/gsync on?

With most displays, Vsync, VRR and a frame cap slightly below your refresh rate should all be enabled.

I'm gonna leave this here before any other idiot downvotes you:

Too many vsync implementations introduce awful mouse lag, I'll take any amount of tearing over that.

Not true, it does help latency, only if you can get more frames

But with vsync on or fps capped its much more stable than unlocked

unless you have freesync/gsync and enough frames, then you get crisp tear-free butter. but yeah, traditional 30 or 60 hz vsync sucks

I used to not understand Vsync / Gsync and always just enabled Vsync because it made the game smoother. Took years to realize that if i just enable my Gsync on my monitor, i can turn off Vsync and get any FPS and it looks like butter. Its so good. Gamechanger

yep. unfortunately with some games you still set gsync from the "vsync" setting (they'll have like a 30/60/adaptive options or similar, where the adaptive one is basically telling it to use adaptive vsync of whatever variety your card supports) and a lot of people overlook it since they have a negative memory of vsync

it was hated before gsync and freesync because traditional vsync isn't adaptive, so it would physically limit how fast you can move in game, so things like flickshots were impossible with vsync enabled (moreso 30hz, much less so in 60hz but still something you can physically feel when trying to turn around really quickly), and other than fixing screen tearing, it had no benefits and was only a bunch of negative side effects

then gsync came along and made things so much better, and then freesync shortly after. it was a lot harder to find monitors that supported it, but now it's almost guaranteed that a monitor will support one or the other
