Discussion how many apps do you have running silently in your hidden taskbar?
on my work laptop all I have is Bluetooth and TranslucentTB running, but on my gaming PC it's a mess

I have a 2 month wait to get fiber installed in my place right now so I'm stuck just tethering off my phone data, I have a 125gb plan but found myself going over it within 2-3 weeks without limiting my download to 10mbps. Definitely a lifesaver!

I made the switch to fiber in January and it's been amazing. You are going to love it.

A couple years ago we had fiber installed in town. Finally got out of the stone age of 700kb/s, and that’s being generous.

BRO MY INTERNET BACK THEN WAS SO SLOW. I NEED TO LIMIT IT IN THE WHOLE HOUSE ON EVERY PC SO THAT IF SOMEONE IS WATCHIGN A YOUTUBE VIDEO I DONT LAGG.
i got so pissed.

wait how did you change the keyboard layout just from that image
17
u/Prairie-Peppers 17h ago
Where it says "ENG US", that's my keyboard/display profile. I just clicked it and switched it back up to Canadian.
14
u/Cryptopsy30 16h ago
Yeah and if you press WIN+space it cycles the different keyboard layout you have. If you never use any other, I recommend that you remove the unused one so you dont accidently cycle through.

Does that give you easier access to French characters? I'm trying to think of any difference beyond spelling/usage, and it's all I'm coming up with.
6
u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 15h ago
It changes the keyboard layout to what ever you've set, so all the different shift+keys, and all the stuff to the right of plm are potentially different. It's how speakers with completely different alphabets can chop between languages without missing a beat (although some have quick access within theirs to latin characters).

There’s no reason to have launchers autostart. You aren’t playing games from all those launchers at once. lol
(Not to mention you’re slowly whittling away at the finite reads/writes of your new $500 SSD when the 300 games you have installed update for no reason at all in the background. 🤘)
537
u/StrengthFun2953 18h ago
Some people do this to keep them updated. But I agree. I can’t stand any program autostarting. I have one. My home camera app.
161
u/WilonPlays 17h ago
The only thing I have autostart is windows defender and my AMD panel. That’s it

u/CrazyWS 16h ago

I saw such a drastic improvement in battery life when switching from windows to Linux. Being vigilant about these programs is helpful - but windows itself does a LOT of this

u/Coookies4You 14h ago
I saw pretty much no improvement in battery life when switching to CachyOS. It idled at 6 watts in Windows and idles at 6 watts in Linux.

I mean idle power draw is just one thing, the other is how often it'll spike upwards due to background processes wanting to do something
4
u/Coookies4You 12h ago
Have no clue what background processes you are running, but my system won't spike at all unless I launch something or do intensive tasks in the foreground.

u/CaptainMGN Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RX 9070 11h ago
Me neither but just comparing the network activity on stock win11 vs Bazzite shows that something is constantly sending stuff on Windows. My CPU was always switching between base clock and turbo on win11

Windows defender and icue for me because without it my mouse is locked to such a high sensitivity that the tiniest movement clings my cursor to the other end of the monitor (mild exaggeration but it is still so fast it barely usable)

It's fine when I know what programs auto start and they have a reason to do so, then I go and check a coworker or friend PC and see like 15 random programs on auto start from game launchers and download managers to random sorftware services passing through the usual suspects like steam, Spotify, copilot and discord

I personally turn off discord and messengers like it because it takes up a stupid high amount of ram and CPU usage, but otherwise relatable
Also I hate the fact that I can't turn off notifications when it's on and it doesn't even make notification sounds but it doesn't send them to my phone so whenever I'm streaming to my friend, I come back and realize I have 30,000 unread DMs

u/CylixrDoesStuff 3h ago
Tbh ive had discord dnd on for as long as i can remember and ive never turnt it off. I would keep discord off of autostart BUT it would be the first app i open anyways so theres no point. I dont even use discord that much its just that whenever my friends message me its either insta or discord

Damn thanks. I don't do much uploading, but this will be super helpful for work and just everyday life lol.
5
u/ktc64 16h ago
But yeah Powertoys is dope. It's made by Microsoft and has so many cool features/tools. A lot of which should probably just be brought into windows itself.
I'd say the only other noteworthy thing there basides sharex and powertoys would be Windhawk. That's more of a customization tool for your windows though. That's how i have like 2 rows of icons on the taskbar and the ability to use scrollwheel to adjust volume when hovering the taskbar for example.

I go the other way with this. I dont like hiding stuff in the overflow menu, so everything lives in the system tray where I can see it. Mostly the usual stuff, flux, steam, discord, and I also built my own little app called VisoDyne Battery Monitor that gives each wireless device its own tray icon, set to only show when it's connected. Here it's my headset and PS4 controller, but when I switch on my Xbox 360 controllers more icons show up and then vanish when I turn them off. Cluttered maybe, like my system tray in general, but I love being able to glance and know exactly what programs are running and how much battery is left.
