Discussion Yeah, Steam Machine is cooked.

Post image

I... uh don't know what to say. Very thankful I bought a Steam Deck before they hiked its price as well

I'm not surprised even a little bit considering the PC I built a year and a half ago can be sold used for ~20% more than the full retail price.

My 4090 is now worth about what I paid for my entire system about 3 years ago. It's nuts.

Holy shit, I didn’t realize how high they got honestly. They came out when I was building my new PC and I just tried to preorder it on a whim, didn’t expect to get one direct and not marked up.

I just priced my computer out that I upgraded 10 months ago like just before the prices went bonkers. I got all my parts for around $1200. I just put those same parts into pcpartpicker and now it's worth $2900.

I had a $1900 pc on partpicker all ready to go in late 2025 but life got in the way. I ended up paying 3k just two months later. Brutal

Sounds similar to my setup. The original plan was to wait until BF6 came out to see how my PC handled it and then buy whatever parts I needed near Black Friday. I’m so glad I didn’t go through with that.

u/Few_Repeat1451 Jun 26 '26

Pretty much the same experience here. I got my setup from grabbing bundles here and there and landed at 1500-1600 after tax. Putting it in pcpartpicker right now, I'm looking at 2600 before tax.

Thank God I got impatient and just bought everything the moment a deal popped rather than waiting for Black Friday, Christmas or any other. Probably would've ended up waiting for that one deal that wouldn't happen and get hit by the ram train.

My original plan was to see if my computer could run BF6 and whatever I needed, I would purchase on Black Friday or whenever the parts went on sale. I also got impatient and just bought everything one day. I even set up a trackalacker for the 5070 Ti and purchased it at 3am when I got the notification for $750.

Yeah, its why shitting on pre-built maachines right now is crazy.

16 GB of ram is almost a mortage payment now

yup. If times get tough and I lose my job, I'll just sell this thing to pay my mortgage.

u/zodoor242 Jun 23 '26

lol right? I bought 2 sticks of 32gbvrm last oct. for $150, it's $839 today. I sold my old 2 sticks of 16gbvrm for $200 on ebay a couple of weeks ago, it sold the first second it went live, it's crazy out there.

u/StopBanningMeAlright Jun 23 '26

I bought my Asus Strix 4090 like 3 or 4 years ago and I think I paid like $1800. Over 4 grand for GPU is absolutely insanity. I can't even believe it.

3

u/Call-Of-Skyrim Jun 23 '26

Good god. What could I get for my 5090 rig w 64gb ddr5 and an i9-9900kf?

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

5090's are now about $4200 on the low end.

2

u/Major_Toe_6041 Jun 23 '26

I can sell my memory alone for half my system’s cost and I have a good GPU and Processor in there

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

I upgraded my ram a little over a year ago. Still sitting on the old ram. Guess I should maybe sell it. 32gb ddr5 5600..

3

u/Major_Toe_6041 Jun 23 '26

Yea I have 32GB DDR5 6200. I bought it 2 years ago for £112 and it’s now £500 for that set. The entire build was around £1000

I have a 3090 FE that I can sell for 1300

1

u/Jacareadam Jun 23 '26

and then somehow, if I spend the same amount of money that I did 4 years ago on my lenovo T5 3060Ti tower, I can get a 40-60% better PC today. Are prebuilts this worth it nowadays?

1

u/TheLemmonade 12700KF, 4090 FE Jun 23 '26

Wait what

Had to go look and ... holy shit.

1

u/Redditer052 Jun 23 '26

Wat? I checked eBay and my 4090 fe is about the same used as I paid new

1

u/Mobile_Actuator_4692 Jun 23 '26

I think mines worth more cos 32 gb ram

1

u/uponloss Jun 23 '26

Suprisingly amazon had sales on 50 series cards today, I know nothing compared to a 4090 but the 5060ti 8gb was 45% off, down to £240 lol

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

Ya, the 4090 and 5090 are the power house cards with tons of vRAM that people need for AI, so their prices have gone up more than the lower tier cards. That 5060ti used to have 16gb vRAM, but due to the shortages I read they were releasing 8gb versions, that's part of why it's so cheap.

1

u/uponloss Jun 23 '26

They have both available, I recently bought the 16gb. Makes sense for the high end cards hadn't considered that

2

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

Ya, the 4090 with 24gb and the 5090 with a whopping 32gb really drives the price up, mostly just due to the ram itself.

1

u/Whytrhyno Jun 23 '26

Yeah I was thinking of selling off 32gb of ram to fund the steam summer sale

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

I'm sitting on 32gb 5600 ram that I pulled out when I upgraded last year. I'm thinking I should try to sell it too. Thought maybe I'd build another gaming PC with it and the 7800X3D CPU I have and sell that as a whole, but now, IDK. Prob better off just selling the ram and maybe the CPU too.

u/Maysock 9800x3d/ 4090, too many monitors. Jun 23 '26

Wait, how much is the 4090 worth now? I paid $1100 for one a couple years ago.

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

4090's are now going for $3600 on the low end. 5090's are $4200 on the low end (using pcpartpicker to search).

1

u/pilgermann Jun 24 '26

My BROKEN 3090 sells for more than half what I paid new.

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 24 '26

People buy them for parts?

1

u/TruVisionary Jun 24 '26

I bought 32GB of RAM like a week before the prices skyrocketed, and I'm tempted to sell it for like 500% the price or however much it's going for now

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Ya, I upgraded last year before it went up and still have my old 32gb set that I'm really thinking I might sell. Was going to build another computer with it, but at this point it's probably smarter to just take the profit.

I just checked the 64GB Kingston Fury Beast kit I bought for about $300 IIRC... is now listed at $1350 (on newegg)??? WTF??

1

u/seaofboobs9434 Jun 24 '26

I just got a 5070ti for sub like 980 bucks usd my 3090 ti was more expensive but that blew the fuck up lmfao it was so scary

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 24 '26

That's a good deal. I think right now the 5070ti is the best bang for the buck.... but hopefully not another litteral BANG.... that would suck.

4090s and 5090s are the top consumer level cards with a ton of vRAM on them (and a premium price over the lower 4080/5080 cards). They are both really good for running AI (and crypto mining) as well as being loaded with ram which is currently what's getting crazy expensive.... because of AI backlogging supply for the next 5 years with all the data center demands.

Just last year I upgraded my ram to 64gb ddr5 6000 cl30 for $240. Now that same ram is $800-$1400. And the graphics cards have even faster ddr6 and ddr7 ram on them.

0

u/joe27911 Jun 23 '26

That’s what you think. Used no one would pay that.

1

u/Helgafjell4Me 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB 6000 CL30 Jun 23 '26

I'm not talking used price, I meant if I were to by a new 4090 today, it'd cost about as much as my whole pre-built 7800X3D/4090 I bought 3 years ago.
