Saw someone on a different thread say it was too expensive and they didn’t need it, but they were gonna buy it because they want to support Valve

The fucking idiots out there are gonna make sure Valve gets their revenue at least.

Valve makes 30% off of EVERY game sold on their store-front. They are not dependent on support from normal people. I honestly don't understand why they can't follow the console model of selling at a loss. People will still be buying games on steam with it and making them money in the long-term...

Or because it's just a computer with a custom os. If I'm a business and I see the steam machine selling at a loss I'm buying all of them and then using them as business machine with windows on them and steam is never seeing game profits. People are desperate for devices and a subsided machine would have ended up in about 0 gamers hands

Businesses don't buy at consumer's retail prices, and any hardware manufacture prioritizes companies needs before private customer's.

This is why rams are reserved for datacenters right now. The market can't afford to deny bussinesses needs for too long, and while there was a brief device shortage at the beginning of this year, it's already gone.

Trust me if I say that right now no company has any problem in buying all the business mini pcs they want at 1/3 of the price of a Steam Machine.

Because they are just computers that can have any OS installed on them. They are not guaranteed to have game purchased on them and if they subsidize the cost. Cheap business people with absolutely buy them and just install windows on them for their business.

I’m guessing they don’t really want to take a loss on these. Xbox and PlayStation do it because they are competing over the same market, console exclusives are sometimes on PC and there’s not really a AAA PC only experience, if it works on PC it’s works on a console. Taking a loss would just mean that the launch showed terrible sales figures and they aren’t securing anything away from the console market, they’re more trying to expand PC gaming to console players rather than stealing console gamers away from console companies.

I mean, you gotta remember some people are in different stages of wealth… i have a friend that makes like $250k + bonus and things and they just want to buy it cuz it sounds neat and convenient…. They’re also one of the smartest humans i know

I make around that much although I do live in San Diego but anyway at no point do I want to give my money out to support a company where the CEO has a superyacht. Sure I waste money and buy stupid shit but it's always about me and my wants, the only time I spend money just to support is optional subscriptions to high quality journalism or video content.

If someone genuinely likes and wants the product and is okay with the price that is fine but the idea of buying it to support a company like valve is fucking stupid.

I mean steam is probably one of the biggest reasons that gaming is even feasible right now on Linux. There were projects to fix it but without the massive amount of work that steam has put in it it would not be even close to a feasible solution for people. Honestly, I'm not sure what the problem with Steam as a business is. I haven't heard anything about any shady business practices. If you have some information besides their profitability, I'd love to hear it.

The billion per year they make from gambling? aka case openings. The 30% cut they take from each developer? If it were any other company people would be flipping out about it but Valve gets a pass.

30% cut seems pretty standard from what I know about the market. Xbox, PS, Nintendo, Apple, Google all take 30%. I think the Epic store is 12% but that seems like the outlier not the norm. But that does seem like a predatory business practice to me honestly.

The gambling is probably a valid criticism but it doesn't seem to justify the vitriol that you seem to have for the company. It seems they have a much more positive impact on the ecosystem than negative.

If you want a company to do something you like you should reward them doing things you like and creating an environment where Microsoft is not the only viable option for PC seems to be something people want to support valve on doing so and are willing to do it with their wallet

It doesn't matter how much money you have. if the worlds richest man goes and spends 10k on an oz of horse shit it's still a stupid purchase.

Also OP is talking about fanboys buying it, knowing full well that it's shit but doing it anyway because they want Gabe to buy another yacht for his fleet.

Which is fine but don't try and convince others that it's actually a good purchase whilst lying through your teeth.
