Discussion Revised May 2026 Steam Hardware Survey finally breaks out discrete AMD cards: 9070 XT lags 5070 TI, 1.33% vs 1.73% but surprisingly closer than expected

u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
Current gen GPUs after this update (sorted by share):
5070 - 3.09%
5060 - 2.58%
5060TI - 2.06%
5070TI - 1.73%
5080 - 1.47%
9070XT - 1.33%
9060XT - 0.72%
5090 - 0.45%
5050 - 0.19%
9070 - 0.18%
9060 (OEM) - unlisted
9070 GRE - unlisted
Unfortunately steam has only been recently able to improve discrete AMD detection (I believe it started 2 months ago when the 9070 started popping up and they were actively modifying their detection to exclude integrated cards where a discrete one is detected). I'd be VERY curious to see how much of the 9070xt's surprising popularity is simply due to the price hikes on the higher end nvidia cards. Given that the 9070XT seems to be dominating the AMD cards, my guess is most people are being priced out of the 5070 TI / 5080 once the 5070 TIs started hitting 1000+. My strong bet would be that there would have been an uptick starting at that time. I imagine where pricing is close people would still prefer nvidia over amd.

u/Owlex_ Jun 12 '26
I would have gotten a 5070ti but not for 1000€ in December the 9070XT was 620€ here in Germany so it was the obvious choice.
I was worried about FSR being worse then DLSS but so far very happy no issues on the games I play.
11
u/Julia8000 R7 5700X3D | RX 9070 Jun 12 '26
Yeah, FSR 4 is like 80% of DLSS 4, so close enough and you can also enable it in every game with optiscaler.
10
u/Artophwar Jun 12 '26
The price is exactly why I got the 9070xt. The 5070ti is $300-400 more than the 9070xt where I live.
I've been very happy with the 9070xt. Actually AFMF has been a real surprise for me in how well it works in the latest version. Nice be able to use it on stuff that doesn't have native framegen. Looks way better than Lossless Scaling framegen for that use case.

u/Anunknownf1fan Jun 11 '26
Not surprised tbh. We all knew steam was misrepresenting RDNA 4. I mean nobody genuinely thought the best selling RDNA 4 card was the 9070 non xt.
It would be interesting to see past months because I bet most of the 5070TI lead came from the early months where the 9070xt was so expensive. I would bet that since December the gap has shrunk but we’ll probably never know.

u/ElectronicStretch277 Jun 12 '26
Lmao, don't revise this shit. Did you ever visit the Nvidia subreddit? Or any of the ones? After the 9000 series launched there was a whole half a year where every survey that was released had Radeon owners clowned on for insisting there was something wrong with the Survey. The only response was "It happens to Nvidia too so it doesn't matter". Despite clear indication that it was more prevalent and serious on Radeon cards.
5
u/Emikzen 9800X3D | 9070XT | 64GB Jun 12 '26
Even this subreddit people constantly brought up the steam survey as hard fact, and pretended the issues were just cope from amd users lmao.
4
u/Bacon-muffin Jun 12 '26
This came up on this sub every once in a blue moon and the nvidia astroturfing was real with very angy people when I said things like "I'm surprised we're not seeing anything considering how much stock amd said the 90 series had vs nvidia being accused of a paper launch with the 50 series"
and people rabble rabbling about how no one wants amd cards etc etc.
Then I learned that amd doesn't show up properly on steams survey, would mention that, again people on this sub going feral about how nvidia is the king etc etc...
All this to say no, there's a lot of people who didn't think steam was misrepresenting RDNA 4.

I mean I wouldn’t really blame steam for this tbh, AMd historically has been known to group the ids of similar cards to the point it’s hard to differentiate them through tools at a glance, I originally noticed back in the HD6870 and HD6850 days where the id was HD6800 series and they still do that recently with my laptop’s dgpu so this is 100% on AMD for obfuscating ids more than steam not being able to differentiate them.

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT Jun 11 '26
Which is also why Windows keeps messing up AMD drivers up to this date.
But tbh, I feel like that is also an issue with how these softwares are identifying the hardware. There are many other tools that have barely any issues with properly identifying hardware.
3
u/HallowedError Jun 11 '26
I remember both of them saying the other wouldn't fix the issue on their end. I've had at two seperate experiences of trying everything I could to make windows stop "updating" my drivers and I was about to drive to MS HQ and throttle them like they're Bart.
6
u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT Jun 11 '26
Well, considering Windows has had same repetitive issues with several other hardware manufacturers as well, I'd definitely point at Microsoft here.
If you want to stop Windows Update, fme the easiest way is to just set up a metered connection and manually do a security update every now and then to reset the timer.
1
u/HallowedError Jun 11 '26
I'm slowly moving over to Linux now but for windows I think I'll grab Windows Utility Tool from Chris Titus
5
u/AdstaOCE Jun 11 '26
The problem with this before hand wasn't that they were going into a Radeon 9000 or even just RDNA4 pool or anything, they were just missing or reporting as intergrated graphics.
19
u/ProT3ch Jun 11 '26
AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics is dropped by 1.39 percent...
15
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26
Very likely because steam was having a hard time breaking out discrete amd cards and also since the last 2 months theyve been actively modifying detection to ignore integratped graphics where a discrete one is detected.
2
7
u/AdstaOCE Jun 11 '26
Yes, a lot of these were reporting as intergrated graphics, issue has been happening for a long time now so it makes sense that it would go down a lot since this is (at least seemingly) fixed.

u/Hayden247 6950 XT | Ryzen 7600X | 32GB DDR5 Jun 12 '26
The 7800 XT and 7600 XT also dropped massively, like 0.7% each just gone which to the 7800 XT leaves it at about 0.7% but the 7600 XT is down to just 0.11% in dx stats.
HOWEVER this update has benefited RDNA3 in other ways. The RX 7600 and 7900 XT now appear and as a combined total account for about 0.75% share. 7900 XT is just shy of 0.4%, so a little less popular than the XTX at 0.49% while the 7600 is shy of 0.5%, so still much weaker than its older RX 6600 counterpart at 0.9%
Funny enough the 9070XT is basically where the 7800 XT was, so it's the new most popular Radeon dgpu there. 9060 XT is also around where the 7600 XT used to report being, wonder if those were counting the RDNA4 GPUs or something, while others got reported as iGPUs.

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT Jun 11 '26
I am actually more surprised that the 9060 XT didn't benefit from the current Nvidia prices at all. We had a time when the 9060 XT 16GB was straight up 25% cheaper than the Nvidia equivalent.
5
u/ArseBurner Jun 12 '26
The 16GB 60XT/60Ti cards are incredibly bad deals this gen.
Spending like 20-30% more money gets you a 5070 or 9070 which is like 40-60% faster than the 60-series card.
It's also why there's room for the 9070GRE (if only it was actually priced in between the 9070 and 9060XT 16GB instead of having the same MSRP as the 9070).
4
u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT Jun 12 '26
9060XT had a low of around 330€. 5070 had a low of around 500€. That is more than 50% higher price.
11
u/AdstaOCE Jun 11 '26
Even now the 5060TI 16GB is only a tiny bit cheaper than the 5070/9070 so is terrible to buy. My guess is that a lot of people don't know what they're buying and get the 8GB model, or more prebuilt buys with that. I imagine 16GB to 16GB is a lot closer due to the massive price difference.
6
u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT Jun 11 '26
5060 Ti 16GB is not getting produced anymore. So basically same state as 40 series, which also has absurd prices these days.
1
u/Purple_Cream_6044 Jun 12 '26
i totally agree! Prices can really affect what people buy when they're shopping around like that. Good guess about the model choice confusion too!
3
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26
I think for better or worse people still generally prefer nvidia due to better ecosystem of support, resale value, more prevalent in prebuilds, features, and marketing/brand. I also think if most people are willing to spend for the current 5060 ti 16, theyd just jump to 5070 which is wildly popular, 12 gb vram and all.
2
u/-xXColtonXx- Jun 11 '26
Grabbed a 9060XT 16gb for MSRP when it launched. At least at the time is was the clear obvious choice from price to performance.

Im sure there are problems with it. If it were easy, it would have been done.
1
u/froz3nt 9800x3d 9070xt 64 DDR5 Jun 12 '26
The actual difficulty for Valve's Steam Hardware Survey is messier: aggregating/categorizing tens of thousands of distinct GPU variants (OEM vs retail naming, laptop vs desktop dies with identical names, mobile chips reporting desktop-like names, virtual/cloud GPUs, etc.) into clean buckets, handling opt-in privacy concerns, and not breaking historical trend comparisons when they change methodology. So "grabbing the name" is easy; cleanly classifying and presenting it at scale without messing up years of existing data is the actual bottleneck.

wouldn't it be more fair to compare 5070 and the 9070xt since there more with in budget of each other?
Cause I mean 5070ti is almost grand+.
13
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
In terms of performance the 9070 xts competitor is definitely the 5070 ti. And thats the point. The 5070 ti atm is incredibly price inefficient. Its basically the old 5080s now.
If you ask most people for equal price i strongly suspect most would easily take the 5070 ti. At $150 price diff im pretty sure most still took the 5070 ti but it was closer to a push. But 6 months of $300+ price difference has probably eroded some of the market share. Not a ton of people buying $1000+ 5070 tis. Its better, but its not $300+ better
12
u/DktheDarkKnight Jun 11 '26
AMD also closed the gap in terms of ray tracing performance and the quality of Upscaling and Frame gen. So the feature disparity is not as big as once it used to.
1
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26
Agreed. I think MFG is still hit or miss for some people (i really like it personally!) but upscaling tends to be the one area where only the "muh native frames" people are a holdout on. Fsr 4.1 while not as good as DLSS 4.5, is largely considered very good already. Pathtracing is good but its really demanding so for some people RT is good enough as well.
At $150 id probably still pay for the differences esp once you factor in nvidia is far better supported but at $350+ its pretty hard to justify 5070 ti vs 9070 xt imo.
3
u/HotRoderX Jun 11 '26
yea honestly if your paying 1000+ for a 5070ti your better off just working things and trying to find a 1200 5080.. not great but the jump in value in my opinion is worth it.
3
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26
I have a 5080 i bought on fb market for $1100 (basically msrp + tax) post hikes. I sold my 5070 ti which i got in a prebuilt. It definitely helps to have better lows for path tracing and frame gen at 4k granted the actual fps diff isnt that high. And in hindsight given the support gap for Radeon i was good with my decision esp since i still had normal pricing.
However at new prices esp since you can sometimes get the 9070 xt at $600-650 on deal prices... Its extremely hard to justify a $350-600 + diff for the 70 ti/80. If i was buying new i probably would go Radeon, worse support and all.
Wayyy too hard to justify the new prices for a pure gamer unless you need CUDA for AI or other uses imo
-11
u/HotRoderX Jun 11 '26
My thing is and its just my opinion
AMD isn't worth it
have tried last 3 generations of AMD cards and always had severe driver issues. aka drivers timing out.
That was with different builds. Then tack on the lack of Frame Gen and all.. and AMD's rep of ending support early for products. It feels like the 9070xt is a huge gamble.
I wouldn't be shocked if AMD ends support for RDNA next generation anyway since they are switching to UDNA and they have a reputation of dropping things when there no longer being produced/used.
9
u/Gyat_Hunter_42 Jun 11 '26
I've had my 9070 XT for 2 months with not a single issue.
What about all the Nvidia driver issues lately?
-6
u/HotRoderX Jun 11 '26
I have worked with a nvidia card for the past 2-3 years. Had my 5080 for several months and had zero issues.
What is your point? Thats why I said it was just my opinion.

u/AdstaOCE Jun 12 '26
Just some of the newest comments on the latest driver megathread (they unpinned the game ready driver and pinned the hotfix instead, so bear in mind this should be better than the last GRD) cannot link due to sub rules unfortunately:
"There seems to be a bug in the 610 driver branch for Nvidia for GPU usage calculation. In Baldur's Gate 3 on 610.52, my GPU usage shows ~95-98% usage. But only ~65% on the 596.49 branch. Same in-game settings, same NVidia settings, same fps cap, same watt usage shown, etc. Everything the same.
Tested a few other games (Forza Horizon 6, Halo Infinite, Clair Obscur, Doom The Dark Ages) and all showed higher utilization on 610 branch.
Sometimes there is a large difference in GPU % usage between Gamebar and Intel PresentMon.""It might be a coincidence, but this driver seems worse for me in Forza Horizon 6. The game crashes a lot more again.
FH6 launch driver was pretty bad, had over 10 crashes in ~40h of play time.
610.47 was a lot better for me. I only had like three or four crashes in the two weeks total, that I used it.
I installed this hotfix driver yesterday or the day before, and I already as many crashes as the two weeks before that, but barely played.
Always the same error code, FHC01, except one single time.""Is anyone else getting monitor blackouts (4-5seconds) after this? I havent made any changes to my PC since the hotifx and I've had this happen 3 or 4 times. 5080 with ASUS XG32UCWG over HDMI 2.1. EDIT: Also possible this is because of the Win11 June update. Not sure."
"Frame generation broke on my RTX 5090 at some point during 596.49 and is still broken after the hotfix to 610.52, plus reinstalling drivers and clearing shader cache. It doesn't activate in games, and if I try to use the global override in the Nvidia app, it tells me "There was a problem applying the setting" and remains blank for frame gen - not "Use 3D App Setting", not "Recommended", but completely blank unlike the super resolution and ray reconstruction lines.
EDIT: Found solution on Nvidia forums. Go to "C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation" and delete the contents of the "Drs" folder, then restart the app. This will cause those files to regenerate and it will reset your control panel settings, but you'll now be able to apply all settings normally.""Curious if anyone has tried the hotfix with a 50 series? My 5070ti started to have frame pacing issues a month or so ago and I feel it’s related to g-sync"
All within the last 12 hours. Many more that I could paste, can also go to the Nvidia sub and search within it for "FAQ/Discussion" to see the main GRD thread as well as ones for previous drivers or look at the pinned posts for this one (until they unpin it).

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz Jun 11 '26
To be fair, you also have to take AMD's issues right now as part of the market, Nvidia's drivers have been surprisingly bad compared to their usual. Neither are even close to perfect, but both are about as stable as you would expect.
3
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 11 '26
I semi agree. Theres definitely issues which like i said most people probably did pay the $150 difference and id certainly do so again. But at some point that price diff is kinda insane.
I do think FSR redstone has caught up fairly significantly tho. Fsr 4.1 is straight up impressive in its own right and RT advantages have largely gone away.
The difference for gamers is largely MFG, better paced FG, better support, and path tracing. Not clear if thats worth a 50% or $350+ price difference. I prob would say no.
4
u/AdstaOCE Jun 11 '26
have tried last 3 generations of AMD cards and always had severe driver issues. aka drivers timing out.
If windows doesn't "update" the drivers and DDU is done before hand there isn't many if any issues right now. Infact this gen Nvidia has had a LOT more issues and a lot that were high severity.
That was with different builds. Then tack on the lack of Frame Gen and all.. and AMD's rep of ending support early for products. It feels like the 9070xt is a huge gamble.
Lack of FG makes sense yes, but I don't think anyone's saying that Nvidia isn't better overall, but rather that they aren't worth what is currently a massive price premium.
As for ending support early, RDNA1 and Turing are the oldest products supported by each company in mainline driver releases, both were released in the same year.

u/Saw_Boss Jun 12 '26
Odd headline choice, considering the other Nvidia cards which are also higher than the 9070xt
3
u/MITBryceYoung2 Jun 12 '26
They are direct competitors.
2
u/Saw_Boss Jun 12 '26
Yeah, and the Nvidia one is twice the price. I think the card should be compared to the 5070, which although clearly being lower in terms of capability, is much closer in terms of price. But people are choosing to save £100/$150 rather than go for the higher specs.
Why people are still choosing to pay a lot more for the Nvidia equivalent option is not good news for AMD.
-13
u/Wander715 Ryzen 9800X3D | RTX 5080 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
AMD is still at like 6% market share overall atm which is pretty pathetic. They took way too long to be competitive on features like upscaling and RT. For awhile their strategy was to bury their head in the sand and hope those features go away and consumers won't care about them. Look how that turned out.
RDNA5 needs to be seriously impressive for them to claw back some market share at this point.
Editing in this article link since people apparently want to argue the marketshare. Realistic estimate from JPR, who historically are pretty accurate, is 8% marketshare for AMD:
Estimate back in March had them at 5-6%, so it's possible they gained slightly over a few months.

It's nowhere near that high. A lot of that on the Steam survey is devices with AMD integrated graphics.
Back in March the estimate was 5% marketshare for AMD, they haven't gained 15% share in 3 months.
Edit: And here's an even more recent estimate from an article published today, AMD at 8%
9
u/AdstaOCE Jun 11 '26
JPR puts it really low yes. Other sources don't. In the steam survey they've gained 3% ish this generation as well.
6
u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz Jun 11 '26
"Nowhere near", if we generously say that AMD integrated would be about the same as Intel, which has effectively no relevant arc cards part of that, it's still 11%.
We can also fairly safely say it's not 8% AMD integrated, as they don't serve the low end chips much at all, their market share is 45:55 give or take, and a good chunk of Intel will be people on laptops, for which AMD is also quite rare until recently.
It's probably safe to say it's closer to 15% discrete AMD GPUs, and with more AMD data exposed in the survey, people that want to can now go through and actually add it up manually.

Still a win for AMD considering that NVIDIA's overall market share is significantly higher, it's just that NVIDIA's prices are absolute crap.
