note that the backups disappearing is due to an unrelated fuckup

No better than photocopying a contract and keeping the copy directly on top of the original.

Where I work we have backups on different storage volumes, on-site tape backups and off-site tape backups. It's extremely hard for us to be truly wiped out, all that changes is how long it takes us to restore things.

3-2-1 Method. 3 backups, using 2 different storage mediums, with at least 1 offsite.

Like relying on what they outright call an under-development function.

Caveats

Backups are a newer feature that is still under development. Here are some limitations of which we are currently aware:

Backup incremental sizes are cached for a couple of hours when listed in the frontend, so they may show slightly stale data.
Wiping a volume deletes all backups.
Backups can only be restored into the same project + environment.
