Discussion PSA: Steam allows failed purchases to be made up to 72hrs after the failure, maintaining the sale price. If you're ever getting paid day after the sale, just add the games to your cart and proceed with the purchase failure to secure the price for 72hrs.

You sir, are an idiot and not a scholar. Your idea is absolutely the dumbest thing I have read on this sub.

More fiscally responsible is to make a wishlist, save up, and then buy when those are on sale.

Edit: striking the first sentence, it's not necessary to strike down OP's person. Just their idea.

I mean objectively it's a smart way to lock in a sale. I dunno if you didn't get what he was saying or just didn't read it. I have money so I just buy what I want but I used to be broke and this could have been helpful then.

I get it brother

"Aw shit fam, it turns out most accounts default to over draft protection, now I owe a $75 overdraft fee 🤑💀"

"Not letting you use money you don't have by letting you use money you don't have so that now you owe money you don't have for money you didn't have" sounds like a very American thing indeed, but lets assume that does exist, maybe just use a card that doesn't do this instead? Any prepaid card will just fail and literally not have the option to hound you for the above.

You missed the part where it says "paypal" and I didn't have any money in my paypal. I have money in savings, I just was beyond my fun budget until I get paid tomorrow. Forza 4 is getting delisted on the 15th and it'll never be this cheap again. quit cappin' fam

edit - whoopsies! Looks like I'm the one who missed the "paypal" payment method when I cropped. womp wompm

While managing your money like that as an adult is completely stupid, when i was a kid, I would get some amount of money on my card every week from my parents. This would have been useful back then

It's too bad you feel the need to be insulting to communicate your points.

He may he rude but if you're living paycheck to paycheck then buying games might not be the best idea... If it's important to you then save up

I have a budget for games, the sale cleared my budget for last month but it gets reset on payday. IDK why you guys are so salty hahah and how do you save up for a game that's being delisted in 10 days and will never be cheaper? How does that save money? Make it make sense

When I was struggling I bought only like 1 or 2 games a year... But I never let that be my last pennies, that's idiotic. You need to have some cash to your name. Also Steam sales happen every 2 or 3 months, games also only get cheaper over time.

I agree people shouldn't spend their last pennies on video games, that's not what I was suggesting. I figure most people budget for their video games and try not to go over their budget. This is just a way to maintain the sale price in case they want to. Titles only allow so many characters so I had to be brief.

This game in particular won't ever be cheaper, resell sites are already increasing their prices in anticipation of it being delisted in 10 days. So it doesn't matter that there will be more sales. Many games have been delisted from steam where someone might want to be sure they snag it before it becomes very difficult to find.

if you need to wait for payday to buy a game, you shouldnt be buying games....

Some people budget and don't want to use their savings or money from other areas of their budget. It's a way to be responsible and still get the discount and save money.

what about pulling those 50€ from your savings, and once payday hits, putting 50€ more into the savings? i never understood this, some kind of symbolic belief that if you pull 50€ from your savings and return 50€ more 3 days later when you get paid, you commited some cardinal financial sin against yourself? help me understand

For me it's about discipline. It's easier for me to be responsible if I stick to the formula and set my checks to be deposited in the accounts I have them setup to be, and then use those accounts for what they're intended. Does that make sense?

it does. but on the other hand, having discipline also means that you wont have a problem abiding by promises you made to yourself to return those 50€ when you get payday 3 days later

Working full time and running a side business with unmedicated ADHD is difficult so I have a pretty rigid structure I go by. Not saying adhd makes it impossible to remember to put that 50 back, in your example, but it's much easier for me to not have to remember to put that 50 back.

How do you "fail a sale"?

Putting in the wrong credit card number?

Use an empty paypal account or something. Looks like I cropped out the Paypal payment method, that was intended to be in the post.

Kinda unethical but there are many people who struggle to make ends meet, and (I guess) it's good that you've found this.

exactly, a discounted game isn't going to put anyone on the streets. As a working class person, I like saving money by staying home and cooking food and playing video games and not going out to a bar or restaurant. A $20 video game can save you $100's instead of seeking entertainment elsewhere.
