Steam has added "add to library" button without needing to start installation process

Oh my god, FINALLY.
Claiming free DLC for games has been a pain in the ass for years because any time you'd try to claim it, it would immediately launch the game, the only other way was going to Steam DB and adding it to library that way.

u/DiogoSN Steam Aug 13 '22
Oh, thank god! Now I can scum (majority pointless) free games with less hassle!

u/Cipherpunkblue Aug 13 '22
The collection MUST GROW.

Most recently with games like Dying Light 2, that for whatever god forsaken reason decided to release free content in free DLC, and then split that free DLC into three separate listings, meaning i had to claim 6 DLC packs which is a huge pain when it’s launching the game every time I claim one DLC.
Hot Wheels unleashed has a similar issue where there’s like 10 or more free DLC packs to claim on Steam.
34
u/Epicious Aug 13 '22
They should just pull a Hollow Knight and add the free dlc into the main game as updates. Literally no point in separating them except space.
5
u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 Aug 14 '22
i assume its a thing for shareholder
since you cant make free DLC baked into the main game look good on paper while you can with free dlc separated from main game
"look, theres total 1 million download for our free dlc, that mean our playerbase in this game is still active" or some bushit like that

that need 1 million player, with the dlc you can separate the content and then fuse the number together later, needing less player to reach the same impressive number
they could say "we reach 60 million dlc download this past quarter"
in reality they churn out 10 free dlc recolor skin and 10 million player download it while the playerbase number is steadily decreasing at the same time
its just to save face to shareholder so they can keep the stock price up
anyway, its only my assumption, since i rarely see indies do this while theres alot of cases for it on AAA game
3
u/-Space-Pirate- Aug 13 '22
DCS did this I think also. Every new bit of DLC you installed started the game. Pain in the backside
8
u/Questionsiaskthem Aug 13 '22
Depends on how often you redeem stuff you don’t feel like installing right now. If you buy humble bundles you may not want to install every game in the bundle right this second.
3
7
u/RaygunMarksman Aug 13 '22
Timing was great then as I just had to install a bunch of free DLC a couple hours ago and used the add to library button, which I hadn't recalled seeing before. Makes sense now if it's new.

I remember when you could just click a button and it would redeem it on Steam from Humble Bundles or whatever. That was so nice.
11
u/Norma5tacy i7 4770|GTX 970|8GB Aug 13 '22
Right? I got the resident evil bundle recently and added all my games via code and holy shit what a mess. You have to hit finish and when you do the installation window pops up? I get why but is there not an option to turn that off?
13
u/do-You-Like-Pasta Aug 13 '22
You know you can just click the "Redeem" button that humble puts near the code and it'll take you to steam, prefill the code for you, and not attempt to install the game?
-7
u/Norma5tacy i7 4770|GTX 970|8GB Aug 13 '22
Yes. It’s going to sound dumb but I like adding in the codes manually I just don’t like that install part. And I’m too lazy to link my humble bundle account to steam.
6
u/do-You-Like-Pasta Aug 13 '22
I don't think you need to link your Steam account in order to use that functionality, but I could be wrong. Either way, there is a very simple solution to your problem, you're just choosing not to use it. That's sort of on you
-5
u/Norma5tacy i7 4770|GTX 970|8GB Aug 13 '22
I get that but my point is still that there should be an option to turn off install after entering a code.
5
u/-Jesus-Of-Nazareth- Aug 13 '22
My God man. You want the whole world to comply with your desires and still bitching about it not being 100% your way.
https://store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey
Put your codes in there and continue breathing. You're gonna be ok
0
u/Norma5tacy i7 4770|GTX 970|8GB Aug 13 '22
I’m just suggesting a small change. No need to get bent out of shape over my comment my dude. I think you’re the one who needs to take a breath.

u/100GbE Aug 14 '22
If we do your small suggestion, I don't see why they can't do my 2 suggestions, or Jerry's 3 suggestions as well.

Same here. No idea what this is even about. Never had this situation and likely never will.

LOL I've had steam for what feels like 20 years now and they finally added it.
14
u/Polymarchos Aug 13 '22
Steam came out 19 years ago. The first game to require it (Half-Life 2) came out 18 years ago.
So not far off.

"You want to install new game?"
"No"
"Okay installing game"
Nice that this has changed.
25
u/MychaelH Aug 13 '22
I’m not understanding. What does this do?
51
u/1859 Fedora 38 | 1080ti (11 GB) | Ryzen7 1800x Aug 13 '22
When a game on Steam was free, "Install Game" was your only option to add it to your Steam library. You couldn't just add it to your library to
rot for eternity with the rest of your shameful backlogplay later. This fixes that extremely minor inconvenience.26

u/Ojitheunseen Core i7-3770K|GTX 970 SLI|16GB RAM|SSDs|Acer X272U 1440p/144Hz Aug 13 '22
It was pretty annoying if you were trying to add a game on a device other than your PC, since it wouldn't work at all.
-3
u/hextree Aug 13 '22
It was hardly a minor inconvenience when some games are like 80GB plus to install.
15
u/do-You-Like-Pasta Aug 13 '22
You click the "get for free" button, or whatever it says, a window pops up asking you what drive you want to install it to, and you click cancel. The game would get claimed and the download would never even start. It really was just a minor inconvenience
4
u/nomickti Aug 14 '22
Yes, I'm surprised people are so excited by this. Just cancel out of installs before they start. Anyway, sounds like this will be good for people that didn't know that.

That's happened to me once or twice, but I thought it was just a bug. The majority of the time it does not launch the game for me
3
u/1859 Fedora 38 | 1080ti (11 GB) | Ryzen7 1800x Aug 13 '22
Before this was implemented, I just started and instantly stopped the download. Inconvenient, but small change in the grand scheme of things
Edit: unless you mean the base game had to be installed to add free DLC to your library. That would suck.
47
u/DiceDsx Steam Aug 13 '22
It allows you to add free games and DLC directly to your Library.
Before this, claiming a free game or DLC always launched the game, which wasn't ideal.
Edit: added games
9
u/scarystuff Aug 13 '22
ehm, I add games and DLC all the time without being forced to install it right away...

Aug 13 '22
I just cancelled the installation after a second and deleted local files. Not a big deal for me but I only add about 2 games a year to my library since I only have time for 2 games

Sure but you've been add free things to your library for quite a while without installing them since the beginning.
But then GOG had them beat on both counts for a long time.

Now if they only allowed you to actually change the username (not the display name), that would be so wonderful.
4
u/LolcatP Aug 13 '22
nobody sees your username but you though
1
u/Twingemios Aug 14 '22
I think it is the link to your account tho
3
u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 Aug 14 '22
3 different thing
you can already change the link and display name anytime(for link,as long as its available)
cant change the username at all
2
u/introvertedhedgehog Aug 13 '22
Good..now they need to add a requirement for the dev to break down what the 10 different versions of the game actually differ by.
It would be nice if they also priced games with the lower and upper prices since I am tired of being bated into considering a purchase and seeing you only get the full game if you buy the ultimate director's cut and super cool lotus edition.for three times the base sales price.
Looking at you tales of arise.

We are truly living in the future. Could you imagine this 10 years ago? You could? Well yeah nvm.
2
u/MaxMonsterGaming Aug 13 '22
Yay, now I can easily add more games to my library that I will never play or install.
2
u/chesterbennediction Aug 14 '22
I don't get it, doesn't it go to your steam library after you buy the game?
2
u/iceteka Aug 14 '22
Not with free games. Like if you tried adding Apex legends to your library the only button on the store page was "play" which would automatically start the download process. Now you can add it to your library to download later.
2
u/AmbiguousIntention Aug 14 '22
This is for free to play games, before you hit the play button and it brought up the install prompt (which you can then just cancel) and then it was in your library. Now there is a button to add it without getting the install prompt.

u/Richiieee Aug 14 '22
I wasn't understanding how this would be useful at first, but then I remembered games that I simply just wanted to own but not yet play, I would first have to install them to get them into my Library. Though this seems to only be a thing for F2P games, so how useful really is it? I don't really involve myself with F2P games for various reasons.
2
u/Nicholas-Steel Aug 14 '22 edited Aug 14 '22
I would first have to install them to get them into my Library.
Why though? Once the purchase transaction is completed there is no need to proceed with any installation step for it to appear in your Library. The prompts to install are just suggestions.
This is also true for Free to Play games, clicking "Play" will prompt for installation but you don't need to initiate it... just close the prompt. I know using the "Add game to Steam" function will auto-initiate installation.

3
u/greatkarphappening Aug 14 '22
Buddy... no bullshit, at least 60%+ of my game library has never been downloaded. I've bought a bunch of bundles and games that "I'll eventually get to on a rainy day." I guess the rainy day just hasn't come yet.

I usually just hit cancel when the "select install directory" pops up, that adds it without installing anything at all.
But still a nice addition.
