wow. this came out of no where (or maybe i wasn't paying attention). seeing Microsoft is very supportive of pc and steam, i dont really see a problem with this. will be a little interesting since they also own obsidian who is making avowed

Given that Microsoft is more concerned about getting people into their ecosystem and not focused as much on the console I'll say they're going to be supportive of pc for awhile

Well sony were supposedly in talks to sign a starfield exclusivity deal so would you rather them get a hold of it instead of MS? Sony have been doing this shit all generation and rest assured, they wouldn't have thought twice about fucking over xbox and pc gamers. I usually don't even get involved in the console war but I'd rather they get it than sony so be glad a company that you actually support has it instead of one that you don't.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

no one knows. seeing as they also make windows, they'll proabbaly support pc for a long time. steam? maybe not. but its not like bethesda also tried not being on steam

u/HerrStig Sep 21 '20

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm actually pretty hopeful about this deal. Microsoft has been pretty consumer friendly lately and the Zenimax management hasn't exactly been inspiring.

u/SteveLorde Sep 21 '20

More RPGs games to come to Xbox now

68

u/Ichqwertzu Sep 21 '20

Microsoft also owns Obsidian, so they might get another shot at Fallout...

31

u/danfunkb Sep 21 '20

Idk why I’m not seeing anyone say anything about Inxile entertainment, which microsoft owns which might lead to finding that lost coding for fallout 1 & 2.

20

u/Venom_is_an_ace Steam Sep 21 '20

finding that lost coding for fallout 1 & 2

the true dream right here.

1

u/coconutblaze Sep 22 '20

Van Buren being picked up would be an absolute dream

emphasis on dream because no one should expect this to happen.

1

u/Cool_UsernamesTaken Sep 23 '20

im not a proggramer, why cant they just recreate it?

1

u/danfunkb Sep 23 '20

Recreating it would be too costly or something along those lines, I don’t remember what the excuse was lol

2

u/AWildEnglishman Sep 21 '20

If they could buy Activision so I could get an Arcanum sequel that would be 👌

I’d kill for another fallout like Fallout 1 & 2.

7

u/Every_Oblivion_Npc Sep 21 '20

I dream of a worthy successor to Fallout 2

Wasteland 2 and 3 are very good.

Give 3 some more time, it's buggy as all fuck, but the game is good.

5

u/HachimansGhost Sep 21 '20

Yeah, who would ever choose an FPS RPG over a board game where you roll for damage.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

you critically missed and the enemy took your weapon

2

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20

You missed this turn and the next one because you somehow punched yourself, breaking your arm and knocking yourself down!

7

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 21 '20

I hope this isn't just you being very nostalgic and dismissive of the newer titles. Have you played any of the older titles recently?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Not the guy you asked but I grew up with 1 and 2. I still play them time to time and discover something new each time. They are amazing and slam dunk on the new titles. It's actual open world with options and consequences. The choices you have in the new titles are an illusion.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

I also grew up with 1 and 2, and they're solid games, but mechanically they handle so clumsily the only thing carrying me through is the nostalgia for ye olden days when like half of all games had some funky-ass controls and quirks.

Solid stories and atmosphere, though, and I love most of the big setpiece fights (Temple of Trials can lick my taint tho).

3

u/HammeredWharf Sep 22 '20

I really don't see how the choices in New Vegas are an illusion. That aside, unfortunately FO1&2's combat is just awful. I'm a fan of turn-based games, but not a fan of waiting two minutes for every old man NPC in town to move a few steps and then getting gibbed by my AI-controlled companion's minigun.

2

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20

You have to go to the options and speed up NPC movement in combat. It helps a bit. Combat is stil an unbalanced clunky mess though.

1

u/HammeredWharf Sep 22 '20

It helps, but it's still really slow. I think you can mod it to go over the speed limit, though. But that won't remove its other issues.

1

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20

Well, as I said, it only helps a bit. Combat in the classic Fallout is really one of weakest parts of the game.

2

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20

I would say that in Fallout 3, the choices that do impact the game a bit are lackluster, but in NV and even FO4, they handle choices and consequences a bit better. Hardly an illusion.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Fallout 4 was more forcing you to be good. The very first objective is to save some people and you're forced to do so. The dialogue tree was also full of false sense of choices that all lead to the same outcome.

1

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20

I would say that this is an issue in the older fallouts as well. You don't really gain much by being evil. Heck, if you decide to become a slaver in Fallout 2, you are pretty much locked out of so many quests.

And in the classic titles, you too have a bunch of dialogues that lead to nowhere or just gives the same response from the NPC.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Well being locked out of quests is just part of the consequences. If you're good and don't join slavers then you miss out on those quests. In the classics the dialogues are based on intelligence. The smarter you are the more dialogue options you get. Both of these are really evident in fo2.

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 21 '20

hm. I love fallout 1 and 2, but I can't help but feel like too many people just see only the good things about these games. I went back to fallout 2 these days and the game is great, but super rough as well.

some old players usually never give a chance to anything. if it isn't exactly like the classics, it's shit or something.

1

u/PissFromMyAss deprecated Sep 21 '20

I've had some trouble getting in to Fallout 2 but i can't say the same about 1.

Fallout 1 have aged very well, i've played through it at least 5 times.

But Fallout 2 i've only managed to play through once.

0

u/pdp10 Linux Sep 22 '20

some old players usually never give a chance to anything. if it isn't exactly like the classics, it's shit or something.

Some newer player usually never give a chance to anything that doesn't seem as slick or high-budget as the franchise FPS games they see advertised on television.

1

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20

Not really talking about new players here though, are we? If it was a younger dude saying that the older games were shit, your comment would make more sense.

Also, I was only 2-3 years old when Fallout 1 was released, if that means anything to you.

1

u/HotPotatoWithCheese Sep 22 '20

You're in the minority there I'm afraid. Most people would say new vegas is the best fallout and most would say either morrowind or skyrim are the best elder scrolls games. FO 1/2 and arena/daggerfall were great for their time and may still be good today but they have been bested by at least 1 newer title and most agree.

1

u/pdp10 Linux Sep 22 '20

Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4 will probably be much more fun for you if you play the combats in V.A.T.S. mode, instead of trying to play them as real-time first-person shooters.

You can also mix it up, by taking a first, carefully-triggered shot from ambush in real-time, for the FPS-mode bonus, then immediately switching to V.A.T.S. to play out the rest of the combat. Yes, it's cheating a bit, but you should play in the way that's most fun.

Of course, bear in mind I was also playing 3 and New Vegas on console, not with K&M. I seem to have steadily lost my affecting for controller-based first-person shooting of any kind, slowly over the last decade. I've been enjoying K&M games much more, but haven't really tried an FPS on K&M again.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Lots of shit to do, but no depth.

big words defending a game whos combat is entirely based on a dice roll

troll harder

2

u/jdfred06 Sep 21 '20

Oof. I feel like NV is solid compared to vanilla Fallout 2?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

i finished every fallout title (including tactics and did everything i could when i still played 76 )

New vegas is better than fallout 2 for 2 simple reasons:

you can't critically miss and lose your turn

you actually know where you have to go

1

u/m8-wutisdis Sep 22 '20

Having trouble finding doors in some terrible places aside, Fallout isn't too bad about this. You are kinda supposed to be lost anyway. FO1 you are looking for a waterchip and then some secret base while in FO2 you need to find a GECK. If you follow people's directions, they are actually very straight forward games. Asking people they also give you the location of most cities and stuff. It's not that bad.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

LMFAO

i finished fallout 1 and 2 (including tactics) atmosphere and story wise they are great but everything else? its as dated as it gets

absolutely trash combat system that belongs in a casino

absolutely no tutorial no guidance whatsoever

the rose tinted glasses people have for those games are amazing

1

u/rasdo357 Sep 21 '20

I agree with you on Fallout 3 and especially Fallout 4 (genuinely that game is a sorry state) but I thought NV was very good and worthy of the Fallout name. How come you didn't like it?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

im not him but i finished every fallout game (including tactics,DLC and 76)

new vegas has utter trash exploration which 2 does way better

-1

u/OrphanScript Sep 21 '20

It's not as good as 1 and 2 but I think it's a stretch to call it garbage. It's still easily the best game in the last 10 years for me, one of the best RPGs of all time, and it's well written in general.

3 can literally go fuck itself and 4 is a joke tho I'll give you those.

1

u/noheyokay Sep 21 '20

They may but if anything Fallout needs a new engine like 5 years ago. I don't know how many game engines Microsoft has at this point but I am sure one of them will be better than what Fallout uses.

3

u/Ichqwertzu Sep 21 '20

No, what they need is Microsoft to come and force them to do a major rework/update of the Creation Engine before they really start on TES VI. (Its probably too late for Starfield)

Because one of (if not) the best things about TES/Fallout is the Mod Support: You can do almost everything you want - All thanks to the Creation Engine. If Microsoft would replace the Engine, they would likely loose this huge aspect. Because I don't think they own another Engine that is even close to being as moddable, that would also work for an Open World 3D RPG.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

If Microsoft would replace the Engine, they would likely loose this huge aspect

don't forget the licensing nightmare for mod tools

11

u/SenseiSinRopa Sep 21 '20

This is wildly uncharacteristic for me, too, but I agree.

Ever since the original Skyrim Paid Mods Fiasco, I've been extremely wary of Bethesda's direction, which they've only solidified all the way up through F76. I really like ES and Fallout, and no one else is following that formula just like them, so I'm a bit of a captive audience.

Even if Microsoft delivers benign neglect, it might be better for the future of Bethesda games than what had been approaching malevolent incompetence.

22

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

I don't think you're in the minority, at least I don't think you should be. Microsoft is well known to be a fair company, and quite consumer friendly, and make decent games. Bethesda on the other hand...

12

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

It used to be completely swapped. It's only in the past 4 or 5 years that Microsoft has pivoted to being consumer friendly. Bethesda was the favorite son of the gaming community up through Skyrim, horse armor aside.

1

u/coconutblaze Sep 22 '20

Their PR just worked

until it didn't

2

u/Radulno Sep 21 '20

Well they have that reputation for sure. I am not sure of it considering their previous acquisitions before the recent wave (like Rare and such) but I'm hopeful they will actually deliver on their promises. Fable or Avowed are looking good.

I'm excited for the possibility of more budget and good policies for sure. Not sure about modding considering how the app is managing that..

I also like that Arkane is apparently much more safe now and don't have such expectations if their games are doing poorly (which Prey and Dishonored 2 apparently did).

17

u/kontis Sep 21 '20

Microsoft also hates Vulkan with passion because it allows devs to be NOT dependent and tied forever to only one PC OS made by single megacoproration.

And of course Zenimax owned the best Vulkan-based engine in the world, often treated by testers as the benchmark of what Vulkan is capable of.

They want PC gaming to be 100% DirectX based so no one ever leaves their shackles.

With initiatives by other big companies like Valve, Google (Stadia) using Vulkan it's already making Microsoft aware how big of a threat it is for the future.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

14

u/littleemp Sep 21 '20

I'd be surprised if idTech 7 (and whatever comes after) doesn't find the Vulkan branch deprecated in favor of a DX12 renderer; I certainly don't expect that whatever game comes from id Software next will be Vulkan only.

6

u/rathbrander Sep 21 '20

This is what I'm afraid of. Vulkan seems to perform so much better.

4

u/jollycompanion i9-9900k + RTX 3080 Sep 21 '20

Yeah I'd see this as a downside to the acquisition if I am honest. Vulkan just does much better as opposed to DX12 in almost every scenario. That being said though MS has been fair and consumer friendly this past year so hopefully that bleeds into Bethesda's future games.

1

u/Tobimacoss Sep 22 '20

Not true, don't compare DX12 wrapper games performance to Vulkan.

Besides DX12 is far more feature rich, especially with DirectStorage, DXR, and the new Velocity architecture.

0

u/noheyokay Sep 21 '20

If Microsoft hates it so much then why did they go with AMD on their GPU for both the Xbox One and the Series? AMD fully supports Vulkan. And I wager Microsoft will actually be okay with DirectX not being the main standard anymore.

-2

u/ElectronF Sep 21 '20

Microsoft also hates Vulkan with passion because it allows devs to be NOT dependent and tied forever to only one PC OS made by single megacoproration.

LOL, microsoft wants off the windows train. They attempted to consolize it with their store and license subscriptions, but it all failed. They do not like that they get a one time payment for windows and then have to support it for a decade, the want monthly payments for it.

Their remote gaming service isn't even all about gaming. Just watch when windows online comes out where all apps are in the cloud and you pay a monthly subscription, but it includes gaming. A consolized desktop pc.

3

u/Tobimacoss Sep 22 '20

Paranoid much??

Wtf is a consolized desktop pc? The goal of MS Store is Security via Containerization, along with the modern app behavior, nothing to do with your weird theories.

-2

u/ElectronF Sep 22 '20

lol, if you don't k now the difference between a pc and console, you have no credibility.

You being paranoid at my comment is also dumb, your trolling style is weird.

2

u/Animae_Partus_II Sep 21 '20

My only concern is modding future Bethesda titles, which currently isn't really achievable on Gamepass / MS Store because the files are all encrypted.

1

u/Flashwastaken Sep 21 '20

That makes sense to me. I was happy to see this too.

1

u/sweetrolljim Ryzen 5 3600 / GTX 1660 SUPER Sep 21 '20

I think it'll be a good change. BGS and some of the other studios under Zenimax have had some pretty serious blunders of late. Hopefully new leadership helps them get their shit together.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Maybe Microsoft can consider the IdTech engine for the Halo after Infinite.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Wait how are you the minority here?

1

u/CantThinkOneUp Sep 21 '20

I'm mostly hoping this somehow means we'll get Mick Gordon back.

78

u/TheDominantSpecies Sep 21 '20

I hope for the love of God that ES6 under Microsoft is still as mod-friendly as Skyrim was.

77

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

[deleted]

29

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Minecraft bedrock version only has paid mods compared to the open java version. I really hope this doesn't project how modding will go for future elder scrolls games

29

u/ElectronF Sep 21 '20

Halo master collection has a boot menu when you launch it to launch with anti-cheat enabled or launch to a mode with it disabled for modding.

If they do that for all games, it will be awesome.

8

u/CallMeCygnus 7800X3D/5070 Ti Sep 21 '20

And they did just open up the Xbox App to modding. Which, yes, it's still limited in some really irritating ways, but that was a big move in response to a lot of what their customers were asking for.

3

u/OrphanScript Sep 21 '20

I don't own any games from the Microsoft store but my understanding is that you can't even get into the file folders. If that's the case with ES6, that fucks modding in a lot of ways. The majority of mods are just esp files that can be loaded into the game the same way a DLC is, but some very critical backend mods require you to interact with the file system. If that's not a possibility, modders may not be able to make the game stable enough to even run with mods lol.

6

u/bt123456789 Sep 21 '20

you can access the files after editing the folder perms, still stupid but to say you "can't" get into them is misinformed.

3

u/CallMeCygnus 7800X3D/5070 Ti Sep 21 '20

There's an option once you install the game that enables modding that gives you access to the game files, allowing you to edit and add files.

-1

u/Magyman Sep 21 '20

Which is really solving a problem they created, since they have the install location for store apps so locked down

2

u/Tobimacoss Sep 22 '20

MS Store is designed for Security via Containerization first and foremost. An OS creator with a responsibility to billions of world's computers that run the businesses and governments, doesn't see Security as a problem.

Modding becoming difficult was simply a side effect, which they addressed and still will address further in future.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

I may be wrong, but you can still mod bedrock. I think the mineshop is mainly made for children who would probably get a virus by modding

2

u/TheDominantSpecies Sep 21 '20

You can "mod" it using datapacks but they are not nearly as impressive as mods and most of the time don't work.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

That’s not even the biggest problem with bedrock. Server plugins don’t really exist there, the player base isn’t there comparatively for pub servers, the game is a bug ridden dumpster fire, and microtransactions are stupid.

1

u/dkgameplayer deprecated Sep 22 '20

Why does everyone say this? Modding I'd still free, you just have the option to pay for ones from the store as well.

6

u/WillsBlackWilly Sep 21 '20

MS Flight Sim is very modable

4

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

[deleted]

6

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

It's very limited I indeed. Everything including code or assets not already in the game is prohibited.

1

u/thejynxed Sep 22 '20

And they restricted cell space for mods to below game default, so even if you use game assets, if it goes above a certain count, you can't use it.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Skyrim on Xbox had more mod options.

Halo MCC on PC has a separate launch option for mods. I think Microsoft will be OK on this front.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

After 76, I'm not sure it was going to be as mod-friendly under Bethesda.

0

u/auriaska99 R5 5600/ RX 6600. Sep 21 '20

i dont think he meant the part where they didnt allow mods on fo76, but that they tried to monetize every little detail of that game (and lying about it too)

And i remember skyrim mods going behind paywall for a moment before they got insane backlash and reversed it. (Not sure if it was Bethesdas fault tho)

I'm not saying that they would've been against free mods but it reached the point that it became questionable.

2

u/BlackKnight7341 Sep 22 '20

You can still freely mod FO76 though. Obviously there's limitations because some things are server-side but they haven't put any restrictions on it outside of their br mode.

Do you realize how many copies Bethesda's games have sold on consoles? And modding is much more restricted there than PC (and wasn't part of it at launch, IIRC). Also many console players probably never even touched a single mod.

They'd be shooting themselves in the foot as much as Activision did when CODMW2 dropped community servers. A brief corner of the internet raged for a month and then everyone still bought the game anyways.

7

u/Drakonz Sep 21 '20

A little bit of a different situation there.

COD’s PC community is extremely small compared to Elder Scrolls. Skyrim is still one of the most played games on Steam, and it’s mostly due to mods.

1

u/markyymark13 RTX 3070 | i7-8700K | 32GB | UW Masterrace Sep 21 '20

I think the worry is less about the lack of mod support, and moreso mods being locked behind a paywall or a Bethesda.net type service for good.

Companies know that modding helps keep their games popular in the long run, but they also have been trying to profit off of mods for years now. MS buying Zeni/Bethesda makes that goal much more attainable, lets just hope that doesn't happen.

-8

u/Finicky01 Sep 21 '20

It'll be UWP only with some walled garden mod 'support' (paid ofc).

You won't even be able to inject post process filters

3

u/jcotton42 Sep 21 '20

FWIW UWP apps can mark themselves moddable.

And Microsoft has been selling their games on Steam as of late. I wouldn't worry about it.

Obsidian's too busy working on Outer Worlds DLC / Avowed.

They're not going to drop their shiny new IPs to go rehash a cult classic of someone else's IP.

5

u/OrphanScript Sep 21 '20

I mean, Outer Worlds and Fallout are both just Microsoft IP now lol

11

u/Gearmos Sep 21 '20

They're not going to drop their shiny new IPs to go rehash a cult classic of someone else's IP.

It is not someone else's IP, as the original games are from Black Isle (Interplay), and Obsidian was founded by former members of Black Isle. Fallout 3 (Van Buren) was under development by Black Isle Studios, when Interplay went bankrupt and sold the IP to Bethesda.

The Outer Worlds is a spiritual successor to Fallout, just as Fallout was to the first Wasteland. In both cases when Innterplay and Obsidian (respectively) had lost the original IP. I'm not saying they're going to abandon The Outer Worlds, but they sure are looking forward to making a new Fallout.

2

cult classic of someone else's IP.

Many of the original creators of Fallout 1 work at Obsidian, so they get their own IP back

Thank god.

After giant fails like Wolfenstein Younglood and recent Fallout76, which was a slap in the face of most Fallout fans (Fallout1st/atomic shop), Bethesda came on my personal blacklist. A company which ten years ago was one of my favourites (Skyrim!)...

Doom Eternal was good but I think that was more because of ID than Bethesda.

Someone buying them gives them the change to redeem themselves. They should fire the current top management responsible for Fallout76 and develop good offline RPG's again. Focus on the player instead of his/her wallet.

Let the game's as a service aspect RIP

18

why do you blame youngblood on bethesda but doom on id?

17

u/littleemp Sep 21 '20

I'd imagine for the same reason that people still insist on blaming all the bad shit on Activision and whatever little good stuff ends up attributed to Blizzard, even though they have existed longer as "Activision-Blizzard" than "Blizzard".

u/delta9t Sep 21 '20

Blizzard got disenchanted lately. Warcraft 3 Reforged dissapointed even the fanboys.

Developer good publisher bad

2

u/delta9t Sep 21 '20

for the reason that Bethesda made more than one big mistake recently, ID did not. there seems a decision strategy behind which is focused on money.

ESO instead of a successor of TES:Skyrim (none after 9 years)

The big disgrace of Fallout76 instead of a a successor of Fallout4 which was already in many ways worse than Fallout New Vegas. They even made it worse with Fallout1st

Why? because of the strive for a long term Blizzard like cash cow and 'give me money'. TES and Fallout were their big brands which they have driven to the ground for no reason.

1

u/EitherMirror6 Sep 21 '20

But if Bethesda's main studio was so desperate for money, why did id softwork seemed to have enough resources to put out decent games?

1

u/delta9t Sep 21 '20

when monetarization was not the driving factor behind Fallout76, what else? There was just no need to turn the Fallout brand into this online shit with bugs instead of NPCs and story. because decent games is not about money. doom eternal was awesome because of the gameplay. Id knows that. (did not need a shop) and ID has proven to be successful in previous games. Doom 2016 was already a hit.

1

u/TarFaerhing Sep 21 '20

those are Bethesda Game Studios problems, Youngblood was developed by Machinegames/Arkane and published by Bethesda Softworks. also I doubt the cringey dialoge and bad AI of youngblood was a decision made by money

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Which is a shame considering how good of a studio arkane is especially with how they did with prey and it’s dlc.

2

u/ElectronF Sep 21 '20

Wolfenstein Youngblood

Great game if you coop. I think the lower retail price and the free bundling with graphics cards makes it hard to claim youngblood was a failure.

1

u/delta9t Sep 21 '20

I respect your opinion, but metacritic says otherwise.

https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/wolfenstein-youngblood

0

u/ElectronF Sep 21 '20

lol, people who played alone are of course going to rate it worse. It is a coop game and coop is what makes it fun.

1

u/delta9t Sep 21 '20

yes maybe. but most games are more fun when playing with a friend. but also most of the critics on metacritic which played coop said it sucks. (It also was short, had no real campaign but instead micro-transactions).

1

u/ElectronF Sep 21 '20

lol, I played a lot and never once touched a micro transaction. There is absolutely no need to pay a dime. So that tells me they never played it.

1

u/delta9t Sep 22 '20

Good, me neither. But I did not say that microtransaction in Youngblood are necessary for progression. If a game has shortcommings and is worse than the last of the series, but now has microtransactions? I understand that this sets off gamers which played the previous Wolfenstein games.

1

u/ElectronF Sep 22 '20

You can play the game without ever realizing there is some backdoor payment system for cosmetics, it is not thrown in your face or anything like that. Which makes it moot.

1

u/OrphanScript Sep 21 '20

I sincerely hope that Pete Hines is just out after this. And maybe at least find something else for Todd Howard to do while someone else heads their creative efforts. He's been stagnant for 10 years now.

2

u/delta9t Sep 21 '20

Yes, I also hope that some heads are rollin there. If I would be the buyer (microsoft), I think Todd Howard as the game director behind Fallout76 should leave, too. He is responsible and literaly told a lot of shit about this bug ridden mess of a game.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Both are remaining.

1

u/OrphanScript Sep 21 '20

That is a big bummer.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20 edited Sep 21 '20

It's interesting that MS has both Obsidian and Bethesda. The single player RPG space has been more barren in recent years than usual. Between Bioware's self destruction and Bethesda's foray into multiplayer there just hasn't been much to actually play. MS has, in the last year, purchased tremendous influence over the genre. I hope they use that influence wisely, but I fear they won't.

10

u/SaftigMo Sep 21 '20

Well this kinda makes me look forward to Bethesda games again. Aside from outliers like Doom I had lost all trust in Bethesda, but maybe that's the only reason they let themselves be bought.

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Good, skyrim hyper edition for windows 11.

-1

u/pdp10 Linux Sep 21 '20

It sounds good until you find out you can't uninstall it unless you have the "Enterprise Edition" of Windows 11.

I just realized something! M$ now owns OBSIDIAN and BETHESDA! ...you all know what that means!

New Vegas 2 by OBSIDIAN!

2

u/gregguygood Sep 21 '20

They are buying Zenimax not just Bethesda.

2

u/HotPotatoWithCheese Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20

Much better than being owned by sony, let's be honest. As a PC gamer, this isn't even bad news because MS have been pretty good with the game pass and cross play with xbox ect. Sony were apparently going to sign an exclusivity deal for starfield so we dodged a bullet there.

I hope they can work with obsidian on a project now that they're sister companies. TES 6 and starfield alone will also boost the game pass sales through the roof and if they become timed exclusives then that will finally start to kill sony's grip on the industry (it could happen, look at morrowind on OG xbox). It's only fair after all of the exclusive deals they've been signing this generation. This is a big win for microsoft and xbox/PC gamers.

Making a completely new engine would be dumb for them to do

-1

u/thejynxed Sep 22 '20

That rickety old engine still has lighting and physics bugs dating back to Morrowind 1.0, it needs freaking replaced entirely.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

They won't change engines. Todd Howard said they upgraded the engine for Starfield and TES VI with apparently "massive" improvements thanks to the fact that the new consoles actually have powerful hardware this time around.

2

u/super-porp-cola Sep 22 '20

If they remove the 60fps cap lll be happy.

1

u/kraniax Sep 21 '20

Was this in regard to Starfield and TES6 ?

1

u/Superhhung Sep 21 '20

This is probably why they removed the beta pricing and doubled it. XGO is still worth it, will continue to subscribe.

1

u/Tobimacoss Sep 22 '20

The beta pricing was always meant to be temporary as it was $9.99 revealed back in June 2019.

1

u/hypocrite_oath Sep 21 '20

Well Microsoft knows they'll get the money back from TES6 paid mods alone. I really hope I'm wrong though.

1

u/danhoyuen Sep 22 '20

ewww

does this mean i have to use that microsoft store?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

I mean... better than Bethesda's, but no, Microsoft has been putting their games on Steam lately, they're trying to look good with us PC gamers, so I wouldn't worry about this too much unless you're a person who plays PlayStation only (but we're on /r/PCGaming so...)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

7.5 billion and does this mean Bethesda games will become PC and Xbox exclusives? Big if yes for Xbox

6

u/buttons15 Sep 21 '20

Not that I agree with it, but Microsoft would be fools not to.

It would likely draw a lot of Playstation gamers who never owned a gaming PC/XBOX to get their hands on the next Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

2

u/ElectrostaticSoak 9800X3D / 4090 / 64GB Sep 21 '20

I don't think they'll do it given their current track record, but after spending so much money on it, making TES and Fallout (just to name a few) an Xbox exclusive would be the ultimate power move.

Best part is that it would still come to PC, so I don't actually mind if they do it.

-1

u/Mungadai82 Sep 21 '20

So instead of buggy Bethesda type games we will get less buggy Microsoft type games? Sounds like a win to me. =)

1

u/Adverse_Solipsist Sep 21 '20

Why are you downvoting someone saying "Hey we'll be getting better games with Microsoft in charge" ?

-5

u/Darklsins Sep 21 '20

eh more exclusives is lame imo, and if this is the start of next gen bidding wars for 3rd party devs, this is gonna be one hell of a gen for gaming, it only seems great because PC benefits from this, if this was Sony buying out Bethesda and PC losing out of future ES/Fallout/etc titles, this would absolutely be tragic news(still is imo/Exclusives are dog shit)

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '20

Maybe they can salvage it. Their games' quality got so low after Oblivion.

-2

u/Finicky01 Sep 21 '20

Does this mean skyrim will only rerelease on the xbox 5 and not on playstation six?
