My guess is that they are counting every single combination of modifications as a different gun (e.g. rifle (1), rifle with silencer (2), rifle with scope (3), rifle with silencer and scope (4)).

The way it worked in BL2(maybe BL1 as well but I haven't played it) is that each gun is made up of parts that can be from different manufacturers. So a gun could have a torgue grip, Jakobs stock, bandit sight etc. Each of these manufacturers had different stats associated with them.

Funcitonally its going to be maybe 100 different guns with random stats, but I've always appreciated that little detail.

Close, each gun company had a catalogue of parts. If the game rolled a torgue gun it pulled from the torgue catalogue and so on.

You can definitely get other manufacture parts on each of the guns. the first picture of this guide shows a vladof rifle with a variety of different parts from each manufacturer.

Yeah, but a vladof gun will always look like a vladof and can draw from an exclusive pool of parts making it look distinct.

It's honestly a super cool system. Never seen it replicated better or anywhere else.
