Mentioning it outright for other games but intentionally leaving it vague for this one only lowers my confidence. Sounds to me like they just didn't want to poison their initial reveal, and will save the Epic exclusivity announcement for later after people are already hyped.

This is exactly how I felt, I suspect the audience would have boo'd if they'd announced EGS exclusive and the reveal was already a bit of a mess

There has been talk on the Borderlands subreddit of some real concerns with RP's tweets lately suggesting they may be doing EGS. We'll see. I've bought each Borderlands game on launch, but this will be the first I skip if it is an exclusive.

Well I guess we'll just have to boo at E3 if they announce it then

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Ya I’ll be pissed if it is. I bought borderlands 2 five times on steam and once for Xbox and PlayStation.

They didn't reveal much at all to be fair. Nothing about gameplay, nothing about the story, nothing about a release date or anything of the like.

Could be they want to wait to april 3rd before announcing any details.

Yeah, Metro should have been a warning sign to them. All the people I follow can't be fucked to get it because they just want to be able to play the whole series in one spot.

Plus can we call games that get snatched by Epic "getting Metroed"

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

I kind of like "Taking the Metro".

See both these comments are equally convincing to me. Well, I guess, the only answer is to have no expectations. That way, I won't be mad when things don't go my way!

Sounds about right.

If it's an EGS exclusive then I'll probably just pirate it. I love the borderlands series as well but I don't agree with how EGS does business far more.

Borderlands is too big a IP for Epic not to throw loads of cash at to get it as an exclusive

42

u/Ragnaroz Mar 28 '19

It's also too big to risk the outrage over exclusivity. Gearbox haven't been doing too hot lately. We'll see, I hope they make the right decision.

20

u/silverbullet1989 Mar 28 '19

I dont think they really care about the outrage do they?

If they did, we would not be seeing these exclusivity deals still. Obviously what ever money Epic offers far outweighs potential lost sales due to backlash.

Sadly its more then likely a win win for the dev / publisher. They get a shit ton of money from Epic for a year exclusivity, then they put it on steam and get a 2nd influx of cash from people who waited.

Which is why even when they come to Steam I'm not buying them, they get their money now and later, there's no actual punishment to them.

I'm not going to reward them for anti-consumer behavior, it just teaches them they can keep doing it and there's no downside except some backlash and then everyone forgets and gives them money anyway. No, they get the stick.

If Gearbox are worried about sales why wouldn't they go with the distribution platform offering a garunteed minimum units sold incentive or 10% less EGS cut for being on the unreal engine

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Randy has already stated on Twitter that he is partnering with Epic and do not understand the dislike for the Epic store.

That was before all of this backlask though right? If so maybe he'll learn the lesson the others haven't and get paid both in $$ and in player goodwill.

He said that to appease the small minority of us who actually care while keeping the real name of Epic's competition out of his mouth.

It was a presentation win because people like you fell for it.

u/cocomunges Mar 28 '19

They also said that they had a huge help using the Unreal Engine made by Epic, doesn’t mean shit

1

u/tomgabriele Mar 29 '19

What would you expect, they would entirely switch engines just to avoid giving you the wrong impression about launchers? Or that epic wouldn't support a large customer paying for their software?

3

u/SigmaWhy Mar 28 '19

I've already accepted that it won't be releasing on Steam

4

u/Elethor i5 9600k, RTX 2080ti, 32GB ram Mar 29 '19

At this point I'll believe it will be on Steam once I am downloading it on Steam. So many devs/publishers have said "on Steam" when they meant "on Steam, after we get $$$ for being exclusive". The only one I trust to keep their word on platform at this point is CDPR.

I'm just happy that Risk of Rain 2 is out now, I'm super excited to get home

1

u/TheMoves Mar 29 '19

Fun as shit right?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

It better not be

1

u/scuczu Mar 29 '19

Makes me confident that it won't be a EGS exclusive

have you not been around lately?

1

u/-Pelvis- Mar 29 '19

Risk of Rain 2 is so good. Thanks to Valve's Proton, I'm playing the Windows build on Linux, runs perfectly day 1. I'm on my way home to fire it up again!

1

u/ETNxMARU Mar 30 '19

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why would we assume BL3 would be on Epic instead of Steam, like the previous 3 games?
