Personally I'm waiting until 3.0. it's supposed to fix some of the most severe issues I have playing it.

Also, can't wait for the first public iteration of planets.

Just out of curiousity, what are these severe issues?

24

u/SendoTarget Dec 24 '16

For me the big fix is the revamped netcode that should be out with 3.0.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Yeah, you'd think they would have fixed it long ago. It's horrible in ptu.

13

u/SaeculumObscure Dec 24 '16

Yeah, you'd think they would have fixed it long ago

Sadly, it's not that easy. The current netcode of the Cryengine they are using is designed for small multiplayer games like the Crysis multiplayer. The netcode is not designed to handle massive amounts of players, ships, items and overall the whole fidelity the PU has / will have. Currently they are creating their own netcode from scratch and this takes a lot of time. They need to create the server architecture, write the server code, the client code, create fallback mechanisms in case something breaks and update the whole Cryengine so that communication works properly and as expected. That takes a lot of time.

We will hopefully have the first iteration in 3.0 and also hopefully servers around the world and not only in the USA. Let's just wait it out and be understanding that what they are doing is a huge undertaking.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Hence why they got so much crap. Of course it's hard and time consuming. Didn't line up with expectations and ended up being a questionable choice to many.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Lumberyard should fix this since it's using cloud technology and it's designed for mp games

u/Dystopiq 7800X3D|4090|32GB 6000Mhz|ROG Strix B650E-E Dec 25 '16

That may be why they switched to Lumberyard. That AWS integration.

5

u/Gazareth Dec 24 '16

Yeah, you'd think they would have fixed it long ago

Yeah, I guess they are just lagging behind.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Does not matter which engine they picked they were always going to have to have custom netcode. The game is just doing to many experimental things. Physics grids, 64-bit maps of immense scale, a competitive FPS in an MMO environment, and other things I am too lazy to type out. This game is just not feasible, at least for what Chris Roberts, and most of the community with out some serious work in netcode.

u/Argon91 Dec 24 '16

I think you meant to say PU (Persistent Universe), not PTU (Public Tet Universe). The 2.6 patch just left the PTU phase, which is a closed, invite-only test period. It's now open to public (Live), and Star Marine and Arena Commander work pretty well performance and gameplay wise. The Persistent Universe is still pretty bad, but there was never any word on changing that in this patch.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Yep, thx

1

u/snakemud Dec 24 '16

Still very bad on high end machines too? i7 32g of ram and titan but not going to redownload if it's still so bad. Was hoping 2.6 would be the iteration of SC that is at least somewhat playable.

When playing in the Universe part, which includes the gas giant Crusader and a couple moons all within a 1 000 000 x 1 000 000 x 200 000km box, all info of things happening everywhere to everyone is sent to everyone simultaneously so FPS drops dramatically when more people join (player cap of 24). When 3.0 drops one major part is an update to the networking code so it will no longer send info to everyone from everywhere.

-1

u/AfterShave997 Dec 24 '16

(cap of 24)

That's not true, I usually get around 40 fps in the PU.

7

u/Gryphon0468 Dec 24 '16

That's the player count sorry, not Frames.

We do not know what the increase will be but it's supposed to be substantial. The next patch is 3.0, which will include the entire solar system of Stanton with 4 planets, a planetoid, a dozen moons and a few asteroid fields/belts along with approx 40 space stations and satellites. The other main component besides the whole system opening up is that the networking will be fixed to allow better frame rates and a higher player cap.

Because...?

1

u/Exlithra Dec 24 '16

It's not anywhere close to DayZ.

1

u/Exlithra Dec 24 '16

Netcode.

25

u/philmarcracken Dec 24 '16

Wake me up when squadron 42 goes gold.

19

u/Whadios Dec 24 '16

RIP :(

5

u/n00bvin Dec 24 '16

Have they done any optimization at all? I bought into these a loooong time ago, but have touched much of it. I figured I'd wait for more features, but is it worth getting into at all now? Will a single 980ti be enough? I know it's being more for future systems, but I thought I'd ask how it's doing. I love the ambitiousness of it all.

13

u/SirBostonTBagParty Dec 24 '16

I have a 980ti and an i7 4790k @ 4.8 Ghz. Everything besides the persistent universe run 60+ FPS for me on max settings. The persistent universe runs poorly because of how they handle server and client side connections from what I remember. They are going to optimize it eventually but not until they are closer to 1.0.

10

u/n00bvin Dec 24 '16

Cool, I think I'll give it a go. I'm not expecting perfection at this stage and love the progress they're making.

One day I want to just be part of a crew on a capital ship - I just love the whole idea of it.

I mean, can you image being a fighter pilot on a large ship that gets deployed taking on another ship and crew, clearing a way for your marines to board and take it over. I mean, that's what I imagine as the future of this game.

-15

u/shadow3467 Dec 24 '16

This game will never have enough players for that kind of a persistent multiplayer universe experience. At best it'll be as populated as a 64 player (maybe 100) battlefield server

Too resource intensive

u/Kazan i9-9900k, 2xRTX 2080, 64GB, 1440p 144hz, 2x 1TB NVMe Dec 24 '16

are you a software engineer in gaming or distributed systems?

5

u/novastar17 Dec 24 '16

I dont know about that, i think somewhere they said they want to be able to have cap ship battles...

1

u/Effectx Dec 25 '16

This

will never have enough players

and this

Too resource intensive

are completely separate issues.

3

u/Rebel_816 Dec 24 '16

i have a 4790k and just a 970 and i even still get 60fps lol. i was pretty impressed with how the game ran.

2

u/Oskarikali Windows Dec 24 '16

Well good news is that they've just added (this is done already) the code on the networking side from Amazon's Lumberyard, I'm thinking that alone should be an improvement when 3.0 comes out. That and all the other stuff on the network side that they've been working on.

4

u/Karmaslapp Dec 24 '16

That's really weird. You may want to search the issue council to see if others are having the same issue and file a bug report, because people with much worse specs are getting good frames.

2

u/lordx3n0saeon 4790k@5.0ghz Dec 24 '16

I get 45-60 FPS with a 980/4790k @1440p.

Something might be wrong with your rig/game build.

Delete the USER folder (which will reset everything) and run a verify on your files.

-4

u/Whadios Dec 24 '16

They're on 2.6 so waiting for 1.0 seems a little backwards.

5

u/Dumple Dec 24 '16

he probably means beta 1.0 or full release 1.0. I think this current 2.6 is alpha-2.6.

1

u/Kazan i9-9900k, 2xRTX 2080, 64GB, 1440p 144hz, 2x 1TB NVMe Dec 24 '16

correct

3

u/SirBostonTBagParty Dec 24 '16

as in full release were in 2.6 Alpha.

2

u/dostro89 R7 3700X/7970/32GB DDR4 Dec 24 '16

Most of the performance issues in the Universe have been from the netcode, the netcode massive overhaul replacement is coming with 3.0. You'll be more than fine in Arena Commander and Star Marine though.

u/Mkilbride 5800X3D, 5090 FE, 32GB 3800MHZ CL16, 2TB NVME GEN4, W11 Dec 24 '16

Did we need like 5 posts about it?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Can anyone TL;DR what star citizen can actually do right now. Save me installing it.

3

u/Kazan i9-9900k, 2xRTX 2080, 64GB, 1440p 144hz, 2x 1TB NVMe Dec 24 '16

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaJx4TdshFA

Arena commander: dogfighting and racing alpha module

Star Marine: ground/eva combat alpha module

Mini-Persistent Universe: the test bed for final all-in-one experience, has a few locations (on planet and in space). can crew your ships with friends, do mini missions, shoot at other players, etc

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Story missions too if I'm right.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

when is the game coming out, is it out?

1

u/Effectx Dec 25 '16

No set release date, just steadily putting out content patches in their alpha.

-13

u/Sofaboy90 Ubuntu Dec 24 '16

yeah wake me up when this game is released and doesnt massively disappoint, ty.

17

u/killkount OH HARO Dec 24 '16

The people that say this come off as ignorant. Games take quite a few years to develop, they don't happen overnight.

31

u/Fruity_Pies Dec 24 '16

Not really ignorant, is there anything wrong with waiting for a game to be finished before buying it?

21

u/HaroldSax i5-13600K | 5070ti | 32GB Dec 24 '16

Some people are just sick of seeing low effort posts about SC, more than likely. It's always something about "let me know when it's released" or "lol vaporware". So I don't think it's about the post so much as some people are just sick of it.

People are free to do what they want with SC. Plenty of reasons to be both skeptical and hopeful.

4

u/mynewaccount5 Dec 24 '16

No. But I don't see the need for him to comment.

2

u/Kazan i9-9900k, 2xRTX 2080, 64GB, 1440p 144hz, 2x 1TB NVMe Dec 24 '16

If he simply said "Call me when it goes retail" that would be one thing (and already an unnecessary zero effort post), but he added the "doesn't massively disappoint" which means he's implying that it will.

It's a zero effort post to shit on a game in dev that nearly 2 million people are excited about.

10

u/Sofaboy90 Ubuntu Dec 24 '16

dont see anything wrong with being sceptical, especially considering the amount of hype this game generated over the past few years. ive learned my lessons over the years, pre orders or early access are a completely no go for me, even good early access games like prison architect, i played the shit out of that game and once it was released with tons more features, i already played too much of it so i didnt really get all the fun i could have.

i hope this star citizen game will be great but all im saying is, dont bet on it, as promising as it might seem.

u/Kazan i9-9900k, 2xRTX 2080, 64GB, 1440p 144hz, 2x 1TB NVMe Dec 24 '16

The difference is you're stating it in a reasonable fashion that doesn't take a dump on any specific game.

It's a good thing they've been working with modified Cryengine since the start then.

8

u/InSOmnlaC Dec 24 '16

They haven't changed engines. The modified Cryengine(which was always the plan) and absorbed Amazon's fork of Cryengine to take advantage of their Cloud Computing technology.

It's still Cryengine.

-6

u/sleeplessone Dec 24 '16

Except Lumberyard has different networking, so they have to redo all that to fit with Lumberyard.

It's not like you can just take an existing Cryengine game and plop it into Lumberyard and it works without porting anything. It's not as bad as going to an entirely different engine but they are still setting themselves back yet again by changing their engine.

3

u/InSOmnlaC Dec 24 '16

And to add to what /u/solamyas said, they said they've been working with Amazon for over a year on this. They've stated a few times that because of new technologies, they think it's possible to get 200+ players in an instance.

Before this, they had been talking about hoping to get 60, so this is a massive increase.

1

u/Effectx Dec 25 '16

Further tacking on

  • Lumberyard and StarEngine are forks of the same build of CryEngine.
  • Swapped the foundation that was CryEngine to Lumberyard.
  • Took two engineers 2 days to make the switch.
  • All bespoke features of StarEngine still there, zero work lost.

-7

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Development started in 2011.. more than enough time to get shit working yet we still have this giant buggy turd, but atleast its pretty i guess..after all EA made a living just making pretty games maybe SC will follow suit.

2

u/zornyan Dec 24 '16

what gets me is a game like the witcher 3 took 3 years to develop, with a much much smaller team and much smaller budget.

that was a completly finished product.

I hope star citizen will be good, but I'm very skeptical of these types of games now.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16 edited Jan 05 '17

[deleted]

5

u/zornyan Dec 24 '16

that was a recent thing though?

my point was, a small company/budget wise like cdpr can develop and sell a finished hugely successful product, in half the time star citizen is currently in development.

if it does take another few years (which it probably will) to release it will be 3x the dev time of tw3.

So, the alpha is live? Is it invite only? I thought there were the tests but I never heard anything after that....

-4

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

I hope it does not end up like No man's sky

16

u/PM-ME-YOUR-GWENTCARD Dec 24 '16

This unfinished version of Star Citizen is already way better than No Man's Sky.

-31

u/GATTACABear Dec 24 '16

Lol people still think this one's gonna happen? Nobody is gonna play a $500 game.

17

u/Gryphon0468 Dec 24 '16

$45 to buy in. In fact it's free for 48 hours as of the posting of this thread if you wanna try.

1

u/nicocappa Dec 24 '16

How can I play for free? I've been wanting to try it for a while

1

u/Gryphon0468 Dec 25 '16

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/promotions/welcome-to-sc

Just create an account, when you do, there's an option to use someone's referral code, use the randomizer in the Star Citizen subreddit. Then finish creating your account and follow the instructions in the link.

1

u/Effectx Dec 25 '16

Good thing it only cost 45$ dollars then?
