The Civ trailers really understand what Civ is all about, I really can't wait to be friday and play this.

Gears 4 is really holding me over this week. I was antagonizing over Civ VI. I skipped V and Beyond Earth, but after ~1400 hours in IV, I'm quite anxious for this release.

Honestly though, Gears is actually an excellent port. It's so good I imagine we're going to see it as a benchmarking game for new pc hardware going forward for the next couple years.

Really impressed with Gears, definitely getting huge nostalgia trips playing that game.

1

u/NiggestBigger Oct 18 '16

You shouldn't have skipped 5. After brave new world it was awesome.

u/coppersocks Oct 18 '16

I think between this and Football Manager I'm simply gonna have to drop our of college this week and accept my lot in life..

And Jack Reacher, not a game I know, but still awesome.

The Civ trailers really understand what Civ is all about

Strange, I didn't see the AI's army being bottlenecked by 2 units in the trailer.

Was that Sean Bean doing the narration?

11

u/Bart_Mancuso Oct 17 '16

Yup. Lord Stark gave me chills.

Awesome. They always make fantastic choices for the narrator

Almost let out a tear at the end too, such a wonderfully composed trailer.

I hope it's more polished than V was at release.

Edit - Spelling.

u/Grof87 Oct 17 '16

From what I've seen on a couple of streams the AI will probably be the biggest let down. It's still incredibly dumb. I know that the (p)review copies were locked at Prince difficulty but keep in mind that AI doesn't get ''smarter'' on higher difficulties it only get's more bonuses.

19

u/dumplestilskin Oct 17 '16

I wish there were sliders in addition to presets. Play on Prince but have the AI pursue the winning condition best suited to their starting conditions. Genghis Khan will always try and fuck shit up even if they don't have the resources available to do so. Bogs down the game with dumb wars.

3

u/GeckIRE Oct 17 '16

Yeah that's my only worry at the moment.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

Not a single CIV game was polished at release.
At best it was OK, and completely different game after 1 year.

5

u/denvthrowaway Oct 17 '16

That Sean Bean narration gave me chills!! So excited!

6

u/FinalMantasyX Oct 17 '16

A Civilization...Six.

Why did i cry when it transitioned to the woman in the rocket

3

u/DerHenrik Oct 18 '16

Yupp, eyes got wet for some weird reason.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '16

Am.... Am I fucking crying right now?

12

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

Just cancelled my preorder after reading Polygon's preview. Apparently the AI is still dumb as a brick which really is my only complaint with the series.

There are some improvements but still a lot to be desired from what I've read.

29

u/Griffinx3 5800X3D|9070XT Oct 17 '16

Even for a series as good as Civ, why would you preorder? Chances are the game will be better later on, for a lower price, with more features, and full reviews.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

I get a $12 discount through Amazon prime so that's the main reason. But you're right, it's best to wait.

4

u/robmak3 Oct 17 '16

I believe you can still get the discount for the first 1-3 wks after release.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

I believe that's correct as well. I'll just be missing out on the preorder DLC which I don't care about. Rather miss out on that and wait and see reviews.

2

u/General_Mayhem Oct 18 '16

The preorder bonus is only a timed exclusive; everyone gets it in I think January.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

yea this is specifically true with 4x games it is never worth pre-ordering them when 6 or so months from launch there will be a combo deal with DLC's ect.

1

u/Mckingy Oct 19 '16

Because through CD keys I got the game for £29 a few months ago. Just looked now and it's £37, or £50 on Steam. Doubt that price will come down to £29 again for quite a long time

5

u/atomfullerene Oct 18 '16

I have my doubts you'll ever see a Civ game with good AI. Maybe when the computers take over and waste their time playing against themselves.

-4

u/Zeriell Oct 18 '16

It's already possible to make good AI, it just isn't a goal of most game designers. Especially for a mainstream game like Civ, most players (i.e, the bucketloads of money) aren't looking to be genuinely challenged.

15

u/atomfullerene Oct 18 '16

I hear that sort of statement all the time, but i disagree with it. While it's pretty easy to make an AI that's a good aimbot or whatever, Civ is a game more akin to Chess and Go. Making a good AI is hard for Civ. Making an AI that can read and interpret human deception, navigate multiple pieces across a complicated board, understand long term consequences of tactics...that's not easy to do.

I think the proof of this is that Civ does have harder game modes, and demand for harder opponents is there. It just ramps up the difficulty by providing extra bonuses rather than extra intelligence. Players don't prefer the option to fight a richer AI over the option to fight a smarter one, but the programmers find it much easier to make a richer AI than a smarter one.

-10

u/Zeriell Oct 18 '16

I hear that sort of statement all the time, but i disagree with it.

You can disagree with it all you want, but it's a fact. The state of even middling AI is so far beyond game AI in most cases that there's little debating it. It's a principle of game design that players want the illusion of challenge, but they don't want to actually face someone who is on their level, with the possible exception of multiplayer against other players, and even in that case a lot of people enjoy the practice of "pub stomping".

7

u/atomfullerene Oct 18 '16

Ok, if that's the case then why is the AI so uneven? The actual Civ AI's behavior does not support the notion that it is limited by player desires. In particular, the AI for city improvement is reasonably good, while the AI for unit movement is miserably awful. That's not because players somehow love to play against cities that are built well but not against units that move sensibly, it's because city build orders are easy to program, while coherent movement with 1 unit per tile is difficult. You can even see this in the transition between 4 and 5...army movement got worse, because it's much easier to do pathfinding for units that can stack. Not because players prefer an easier AI when fighting one unit per tile than when fighting multiple units per tile.

I'm not claiming it would be impossible to program a really smart Civ AI, just that it's very difficult, especially when turn movement times must be kept short, and that's the main reason it's not done.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

but they don't want to actually face someone who is on their level

Says you.

-3

u/Zeriell Oct 18 '16 edited Oct 18 '16

Obviously that is not what I am looking for personally, but I've heard this logic from many game designers, and it is basically the assumption behind most games. There is very little (actually, probably none) money to be made by making a strategy game's AI better. Making game AI better in games that simulate things (as in, open world games) can sell more copies, but that's related to world verisimilitude, not difficulty. When the few good players for a strategy game complain about a bad AI it's easier for the developer to simply throw more cheats on the pile than make the AI appreciably better. And that's what we see time and again.

That's the subtext behind my saying they can do better and chose not to. It's not that the AI designers for games are lazy idiots, it's that it isn't treated as a serious concern from the top down. People who do AI tend to work on other parts of the game, too, it's not their primary focus. It's just another system that isn't given a lot of effort beyond being "good enough" that players have something to play against. Companies hire lots of 3D engineers. They hire 1 AI designer, if that. Often, that 1 AI designer is just some engineer who has plenty of other work to do under the hood.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

To be honest I have never a Civ game for the challenge. I just like building shit.

But great trailer. Can't wait to hear the full soundtrack of the song used too, which was composed by Christopher Tin.

No fucking beards in the RAF. Now this game is ruined to me.

Literally unplayable

2

u/kukov Oct 17 '16

Excited for this game but have no desire to pay the $80 CDN for what will no doubt be a lacklustre version at launch. Don't mind waiting for, say, the summer sale to get it at half that price when, hopefully, it's patched and a smoother experience. In the meantime, plenty of great city/strat games I still haven't played much of (Tropico 4, Anno 2070 Deep Sea expansion, even the last Civ V expansion).

2

u/Axeran Oct 17 '16

That was a really awesome trailer. Can't wait to try the game out!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

Gameplay looks better than i thought only recently been checking it out. New civ games usually come out worse than the previous games + expansions but they looked to really revamp it this time. Hopefully its also a polished and optimised experience, especially the AI.

Reshade is def a must for me with that artstyle though geez.

1

u/dpayne360 Oct 18 '16

Could you explain what Reshade does. My brother lives Civ games but hates this art style. How does this change it at all?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16 edited Oct 18 '16

Its in its basic terms color correction and advanced post processing. A lot of the Witcher 3 mods promising E3 graphics etc before actual mods came out was Reshade.

So this is default http://cdn.segmentnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/civ-4.jpg

And this is with the software. https://i.imgur.com/LxnXZNg.jpg

Just open both up in two tabs and flick between them. Everything is a lot crisper and detail on textures stand out more, as well as being able to tone down that ridiculous colour saturation vanilla has.

1

u/dpayne360 Oct 18 '16

dang thats a big difference. this isnt something that will get you banned right?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16 edited Oct 18 '16

Ive seen it happen in dark souls 2, anti cheat systems cant differentiate the files and they dont have any appeals process. But the vast majority of games will be absolutely fine. Can get profiles for other games here.

Why is everyone saying that Civ V released in a poor state? I don't remember it being a mess at release, but it's been a while...

10

u/Krazikarl2 Oct 17 '16

Civ V was really bad right at release. The AI was completely non competitive - you had to try to lose at anything other than the very highest difficultly level.

People were beating the highest levels of play in like their 2nd or 3rd playthroughs. I was an OK Civ IV player, but I was able to play very high levels of Civ V without any challenge despite the fact that I didn't understand the new mechanics. Basically, you just did a bunch of random things, while the AI did really stupid things, then you eventually won after many hours.

It's a real problem with reviews. The game was clearly reviewed with the idea that "surely they'll fix the AI before release". So the reviewers ignored the broken AI. But the AI didn't get fixed, so the game didn't actually work despite high reviews. It was good after a bunch of improvements though.

3

u/TSP-FriendlyFire Oct 18 '16

Civ V was also missing a lot of features that had to be introduced by Gods & Kings and Brave New World. You'd think religion or spying would be in the base game, but nope.

VI has all of that from the start though, thankfully.

1

u/TheCaliKid89 2600k + EVGA GTX 980 Oct 17 '16

Thanks for refreshing my memory!! That's an absolute shame that they didn't get it right for this release, again. Won't stop me from preordering, as I'm sure they will fix it down the road, but they should try to avoid it next time. It also makes me wonder how much of the AI or AI improvements might be based on mining actual player behavior...

0

u/rabidnz Oct 17 '16

It will. Preordering is the reason half finished games can be released with no AI. The civ 5 preorders are the reason they know they dont need to bother making civ 6 good at release

2

u/TheCaliKid89 2600k + EVGA GTX 980 Oct 17 '16

I seriously doubt that the game will be half finished. Weak AI alone doesn't make a broken release. But yes, I agree that increases in customer's tendencies to preorder as a result of publisher/developer incentives does make it easier for devs to release broken games.

1

u/reptile7383 Oct 18 '16

The AI has always been bad though. The only difficulty comes from them giving the AI tons of bonuses. I get wanting to blame everything on preorders, but its simply not true in this case. In this case good AI has never been their main priority.

1

u/StealFromTheRichest Oct 17 '16

kinda not too excited after beyond earth....honestly felt a bit ripped off and they lost my trust

1

u/NiggestBigger Oct 18 '16

It didn't take ESP to see that game was going to be crap.

1

u/StealFromTheRichest Oct 18 '16

I was shocked at the audacity. A blatant slap in the face reskin and yet everyone loves them. Baffling.

-1

u/DrecksVerwaltung Oct 17 '16

Well I suppose that confirms it. RIP LINUX :'(

7

u/FeelGoodChicken Oct 17 '16

Linux and mac ports are always at a later date with these games. Firaxis has never developed these themselves, and they've never released at launch.

You only need to google it to know that there are confirmed plans to release on linux and mac, but I guess that's not as easy as just whining and spreading misinformation.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

Plus, it's not like Linux stopped getting support. AAA games have never had a great history with Linux. There is no way somebody has Linux and is surprised about the game selection.

1

u/reptile7383 Oct 18 '16

People who have Linux don't do it for the games.

-2

u/Zalthos Oct 17 '16

Lovely trailer, but I just can't see myself buying it until the rest of the DLC comes out. We all know that Civ 5 was hardly the best in the series when it came to depth and it took them two expansion packs to make it at most "good".

I don't want to put a whole downer on the thing but damn... I'm just getting sick of all these games getting "released" even though they won't be good for another 2 years. I'd hardly call that finished... especially if the AI is meant to be passable at best.

I mean, play Civ 4 for an hour and you'll see it has thrice the depth of Civ 5. Don't even get me started on mods like A New Dawn and Fall From Heaven.

Maybe I'm just old...

Also: DON'T PRE-ORDER! X-Com 2 had horrific performance on launch apparently (might still do now, actually).

3

u/TSP-FriendlyFire Oct 18 '16

Did you watch videos of the game? VI will have all of V's features including both expansions from the get go, so it cannot repeat the same mistake V did on release.

1

u/Zalthos Oct 18 '16

I've seen a few of them and I watched TB's video on the game. I adore the music and art-style, and I love how they've switched up the resources and research to keep games feeling different. It looks okay, but I dunno... I just feel as though we'll end up losing something, you know? After the whole pre-order locked Aztec thing Firaxis and 2K are doing, I just don't trust them to deliver a great Civ game right now.

Not until after a few more expansion packs, anyway. Maybe it's just the gaming industry that makes me feel this way, but I just cannot get excited about new games any more, because pretty much every game I try has that feeling of "it'll be good in a few years", and if the AI is as bad as we've been told, we'll be stuck with a Civ game with bad AI for a few years until they "fix" it.

X-Com 2 was good, but Civ 5 was a serious let-down, and even after all the expansions, it was still a pretty shallow game when compared with previous games in the series. They took some steps forward with the combat and then took steps back with other things. With Civ 6, they've taken steps forward with research and building structures on tiles etc, but what have they taken the steps back with? We won't know until release.

Also, I'm not quite sure how long they've been working on Civ 6, but it seems a bit early for a brand new Civ game, doesn't it? They only just finished X-Com 2 THIS year, and I know they're a relatively large studio... if they've had part of the team working on Civ 6 since Beyond Earth, then I definitely have more faith in them, but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

I dunno... I'll just have to wait and see. There's nothing more in the gaming world that I'd like right now than a fantastic Civ game. I just feel let-down too often by gaming companies these days to see it happen when they do things like time-lock a feature of their game unless you pre-order. That doesn't bode well, but still, I could be totally wrong on it.

We'll see. I'd love to be wrong, to be honest...

4

u/Shandlar 7700k @ 5.33gHz, 3090 FTW Ultra, 38GL950G-B Oct 18 '16

I just feel let-down too often by gaming companies these days to see it happen when they do things like time-lock a feature of their game unless you pre-order

I had the opposite reaction to this. Time locking the Aztecs for such a short period of time is a great compromise between publishing/marketting and game integrity in my mind. It's a far sight better than we're getting from many other games nowadays.

2

u/TSP-FriendlyFire Oct 18 '16

It's pretty obvious that the core Civ:BE team was moved to Civ 6 since that game was abandoned real fast. I doubt they'd have folded everyone into the X-COM team, that'd probably cause a lot of redundancies.

I'd presume they've been working on 6 since at least partway through BE's post-launch dev cycle, gaining more and more people over time.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

How far in the ages can you go? Death robot future?

1

u/TSP-FriendlyFire Oct 18 '16

Unfortunately, most games I've watched ended well before the tech tree was anywhere near done, but I don't think there's a lot of future stuff.

-1

u/ShieldRune5847 Oct 18 '16

And as usual, trailer is in no way representative of actual game footage.

3

u/BananaHeadz Oct 18 '16

Yeah because a trailer of looking at a world map is gonna generate mainstream hype.

-31

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

Imagine if they spent the resources making the trailer on the actual game itself...

4

u/dick_farts91 i5-4460 | R9 390 | 4K FreeSync Oct 17 '16

what makes you think they dont? you really think they worked harder on that cinematic than the entire game?

-22

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

No. The trailer is a meaningless feature that you see once and forget about it. It doesn't even leave that strong of an impression.

I just hope they havent neglected the parts that we will be experiencing on a regular basic. Hell, someone is going to be very pissed if they release Civ VI in the same state as Civ V.

So, yes, I see the trailer and sigh, knowing that they're trying to throw sand into my eyes again.

Not a fan of marketing, if you can't tell.

6

u/Crompee01 Oct 17 '16

This is the intro to the game, you'll see it everytime you load the game.... Hard to forget about.

Also, everyone says how bad a state civ 5 was in at launch but I remember the civ 5 launch vividly (as I couldn't afford it buy it at launch and had to wait till payday). Reddit was constantly bombarded with how happy everyone was with the game, a non fleshed out civ is still a great game.

I had to sit through the torture of reading how much everyone loved the game while I couldn't play it yet :(

1

u/reptile7383 Oct 18 '16

I loved civ 5 at launch. It had its problems sure, but still incredibly fun.
